Presentation Day 2017
From the Deputy Principal Ms Jane Stanley, Deputy Principal
What a year it has been! I would like to thank the students, staff and community for welcoming me back
to Matraville Sports High School. I am extremely happy to have received the substantive Deputy Principal
position. Working in such a vibrant and positive environment has been so rewarding, and with all the
wonderful opportunities available to our students, 2018 should be a cracker of a year.
I would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and hope you all have a safe and wonderful break.
I am looking forward to seeing everyone again next year.
UNSW Student designs first national indigenous rugby jersey
The first Indigenous-inspired jersey worn by a national rugby team of any code has been designed by
Dennis Golding, a UNSW Fine Arts student. UNSW Art & Design honours student, Dennis Golding, designed
Australia’s first Indigenous national rugby jersey worn by the Wallabies in the Bledisloe Test.
The third year Fine Arts student, a Kamilario/Gamilaraay artist, was chosen to design the historic jersey after
winning an Australia Rugby Union (ARU) tender in 2015. The green and gold uniform features an image of a
wallaby on the front and shows Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities joining together, with symbols
for the 14 Indigenous players who have represented Australia - Cecil Ramalli, Lloyd McDermott, Mark Ella,
Glen Ella, Gary Ella, Lloyd Walker, Andrew Walker, Jim Williams, Wendell Sailor, Timana Tahu, Anthony
Faingaa, Saia Faingaa, Beale Hodgson, and Matt Hodgson.
The Indigenous jersey was unveiled by Wallabies player Kurtley Beale in July, but was worn by the players for
the first time when Brisbane hosted the final of the Bledisloe Test.
Beale has campaigned the ARU for an Indigenous jersey for years and is now urging the team to wear it
annually.
Inspiring the next generation of solar innovators
The Michael Crouch Innovation Centre (MCIC) has been approached by International Grammar School to
help kick-start a new technology stream designed to replace the tired TAS unit, (technology and applied
studies). They are calling it Digital Innovation High, DI High. Graham Clarkson, Director of ICT & Digital
Innovation at IGS is the brains behind the initiative and through MCIC’s introduction will be partnering with
Matraville Sports High to run the first pilot program at the MCIC.
On 9th November, 15 students from each school came together to participate in a UNSW SunSprint workshop
sponsored by UNSW Engineering and UNSW Photovoltaics and Renewable Energy Engineering Australian
Centre for Advanced Photovoltaics.
The UNSW SunSprint workshop is a school outreach program designed to introduce children to the magic of
solar power. Open to students from Kindergarten to Year 12, SunSprint challenges students to design, build
and race their own solar-powered model car or boat. Working to specific design rules and technical
standards, participants attain a greater knowledge of solar cells, motors, gears, electricity and the power of
the sun, while honing their racing skills to achieve peak performance for their cars.
UNSW will be hosting a gala race day in early December where all workshop participants will be able to race
their cars against other students from all over NSW.
Support Faculty update
Mr Michael Graham, teacher
Sailors With DisABILITIES
On Tuesday 28th November, a group of junior students from the Support Unit were lucky enough to be part
of the Winds of Joy program. Students got to sail around Sydney aboard a yacht and build their confidence
and safety skills around water. Thank you to the crew for being so generous and welcoming.
Barista course
On Tuesday 5th December, five senior students from the Support Unit completed their barista training for the
year and took another step towards becoming independent contributors to the workforce. Congratulations
to Luka Keats, Liam Mears, Lucas Thomspon, Luka Krstic and George Kallias for your exemplary behaviour
and work ethic all term.
Year 12 field work – Case Study Urban Dynamics in Pyrmont
Mr Adam Bussell, HSIE teacher
On Wednesday the 6th of December the Year 12 Geography class went to Pyrmont in the city to conduct
some fieldwork based on Urban Dynamics. The students learnt about urban growth and decline in the
Pyrmont area as well as seeing first hand how Darling Harbour has changed over time. They also used maps
and made observations to analyse the livability of the area. The highlight of the fieldwork was the ferry ride
from Darling Harbour to Circular Quay, where the students seen the new Barangaroo development and
learnt about the state government's new plans for the future of Sydney. The students are looking forward to
more fieldwork in 2018.
Science Faculty update
Congratulations to Science teacher Mr Danny Tran
who graduated from UNSW
with his Master of Teaching Degree!
Ms Rebecca Li, SRC coordinator

Positive Behaviour for Learning
Mr Adam Bussell, PBL Coordinator
On Thursday the 7th of December 34 students and 7 staff went to Wet ‘n Wild Sydney for the Positive
Behaviour for Learning rewards excursion. The students, who were a mix of mainstream and support
students, were attending as a reward for their ongoing good behaviour and effort this year. The students
attended a special schools-only day and had a really fun time on the rides and in the pools. I would like to
thank all the staff and students who attended, especially the support staff who made it possible for all
students to enjoy the day. I would also like to thank all the staff at school for their support of PBL, our office
staff, our Deputy Principal Jane Stanley, as well as our Principal Nerida Walker who made the whole day
possible. I look forward to another successful year of PBL in 2018 and students keep collecting those bronze
merits!
CBA AMAZE Expo
On the 19th of October Aboriginal students from Year 9-12 were invited to attend Commonwealth Bank’s
AMAZE Expo at their Headquarters in Darling Harbour. The Expo showcased all things technology.
The interactive expo encouraged students to explore and discover through touch and play. From Virtual and
Augmented Reality to Artificial Intelligence, Internet of Things, Quantum Computing, Cyber Security, System
Hacking, Robotic Support Systems, Virtual Painting and Program Designing the students were amazed at
what the future of banking will look like.
The highlight of the day was when our girls took on Canterbury Boys’ High School in the Program Design
challenge where they had to program the movement of a ball through a maze and won. The girls were
awarded their own set of virtual reality goggles. We also got to take home some really gadgets and gifts.
A big thanks to Shallan, Aunty Gayle, Mr Cheng and Brad Cook from CBA for an awesome day.
Canteen News
Unfortunately the school’s last canteen tender process resulted in no applicants being appointed to run the
canteen for the 2018 year. The school will re-tender T1, Wk1 next year. If you are aware of any businesses who may be suitable to run
the canteen, please make them aware that the tender will be advertised in the last week of the school
holidays and tender information packs will be available from the first week of school. In the 3-4 week interim, before a new canteen is appointed, the very lovely people from Poppy’s Café at
Matraville have agreed to provide us with a simple lunchtime menu. Poppy’s provides high quality and tasty
lunches and we are appreciative of their assistance in providing students with this great deal.
Lunch orders will be collected at roll call and will need to be at the front office by 9.30am.
Please note: we have no capacity to deal with change – the correct $ amount must be included with the
order which should be clearly marked with the student’s name and order details.
Thank you for your patience whilst the tendering process is finalised.
