FILM PRODUCTIONThe Animated Filmmaking ProcessThe filmmaking process starts with an idea. Inspiration for a film comes from many sources—• from our in-house staff• from freelance writers or from existing literary or other works. Successful ideas are generally written up as a treatment (or story description) and then proceed to a screenplay, followed by the storyboarding process and then finally into the production process. Excluding thescript and early development phase, the production process, from storyboarding to filming out thefinal image, for a full-length feature film can take approximately three to four years. From this you can see the dedication and time put into each film as they will need to be checked regularly to ensure they contain no mistakes or flaws in any area. Editing will be the main focus for DreamWorks as the films are animated and therefore computer based.

CONSUMPTION OF DREAMWORKS FILMS

As of October 2012, its feature films have made over $10 billion worldwide, with its $430 million average gross surpassing all other studios besides Pixar ($595 million). Four of DreamWorks Animation's films—Shrek 2, Shrek the Third, Shrek Forever After, and Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted—are among the 50 highest-grossing films of all time, and fifteen of the films are among the 50 highest-grossing animated films, with Shrek 2 being the fourth all-time highest. The company is very successful with its lowest return form films produced being 41% however, the majority have had successful returns bringing in millions for the company. DreamWorks appeal to a wide audience as many parents enjoy watching the films with their children as children would be their target audience. However, many teenagers enjoy the films especially if they are continuous films like Shrek which has 4 films. This is because they would have seen the previous films whilst growing up and gives them a sense of nostalgia but they would also want to know the rest of the storyline.

WORKING ALONGSIDE OTHER COMPANIES

DreamWorks Animation has an on-going partnership with HP, and the studio exclusively uses HP workstations and servers. In 2005, DWA partnered with HP to introduce HP Halo Telepresence Solutions, technologies that allow people in different locations to communicate in a face-to-face environment in real time. In 2005, AMD signed a 3 year deal to provide processors to the studio. This relationship ended in 2008, and DreamWorks announced that they will use Intel processors for future production On June 4, 2010, DreamWorks Animation and Royal Caribbean announced a strategic alliance set to take place onboard Royal Caribbean cruise ships including Allure of the Seas. This helps as mainly families go on cruises who may have young children who enjoy watching the films. These are all ways in which DreamWorks can progress and further their company becoming more successful. This also allows them to have a bigger variety of where and when the films are played which increases promotion as if people see the film they may go back and buy them for personal use at their own homes. This therefore acts as an advertisement in order to gain a larger audience.

MECHANIDISE AND

ADVERTISING

Dreamworks Animation have a number of attractions including:• Far Far Away • Madagascar DreamWorks Experience (Madagascar

Madness Shrek's Faire Faire Away, Kung Fu Panda: Land of Awesomeness)

These attractions would act as advertisment for Dreamworks Animation as they are promoting their films and attracting their target audience which is children . This is effective for Dreamworks as these different promotion methods keep audiences interested and excited for future releases creating a strong audience. DreamWorks also sell a large number of different merchandise relates to their films as seen on the left they have different games and stationary. I have also included a picture of their Facebook page showing another way in which they can appeal to the public but also showing how popular they are with their likes.

Franchises:• Shrek (2001) • Madagascar (2005) • Kung Fu Panda (2008) • Monsters vs. Aliens (2009) • How To Train Your Dragon

(2010)

TECHNOLOGYTechnology is a very important aspect to DreamWorks as all their films they produce are animated and therefore require computers and different technologies in order to be created. At DreamWorks, a new movie automatically means fresh Hewlett-Packard z800 workstations, new software, additional storage and other equipment for about 500 highly trained artists and supervisors. This shows just how important technology is for the making of their films.

Technology is also important for the distribution of their films. As it allows them to be distributed and known worldwide. The internet allows people in different countries to order different merchandise including DVDs and games of DreamWorks Animations which therefore impacts their distribution as people in countries which do not show their films may then be able to buy the films increasing sales and audience for DreamWorks. It also allows people to communicate about DreamWorks through their Facebook page leaving their feedback about the films and showing the company what they enjoyed which will help them for future releases.
