History lesson –
Why combine Ireland and the UK?
December 1922 saw the Irish Republic officially formed. 26 counties in the South of Ireland were declared independent from the UK, this left the 6 counties in the North of Ireland still under the jurisdiction and rule of the UK parliament and monarchy.
To this day the UK remains Irelands largest singletrading partner and shares a common boundary.

Irish and UK fish catch volumes are controlled by the EU Common Fisheries Policy.
Fishing quotas are set annually against independent research advice with most fish species being issued with a total allowable catch (TAC).
The TAC’s are allocated amongst the EU countries and maybe adopted, altered then possibly shared or swapped or even changed; it is the responsibility of the Nation State to monitor and openly report the catch volumes they accrue against the quotas.
Once the quota is completed the catching should cease.

2017 figures indicate the Irish and UK boats will land 800,000 mt wild capture fish to domestic ports and potentially a further 50% more to other countries.
Farmed fish (mainly salmon) will add a further 200,000 mt to this figure.

As for the future – its going to be interesting, Ireland and the UK will continue to fish, making high quality fishmeal and fish oil nomatter what the politicians throw at us however there will be one word that will dominate our industry in the next 18 months - Brexit.
