  1. 1. 1 DEPARTMENT OF CHEMICAL ENGINEERING.
  2. 2. CONTENTS 2 DEFINITION Order of reaction Initial rate method. Vant hoff differential method.
  3. 3. Order of reaction 3 Defination: Sum of power of concentration in rate expression is known as order of reaction.
  4. 4. TYPES OF ORDER OF REACTION 4 1. Zero order reaction 2. First order reaction 3. Second order reaction 4. Third order reaction & Higher 5. Pseudo order reaction 6. Complex reactions
  5. 5. METHODS TO DETERMINE ORDER OF REACTION 5 1. INITIAL RATE METHOD 2. Vant hoff differential method
  6. 6. Initial rate method In this method initial rate of reaction is determined by varying the concentration of one of the reactants while others are kept constant R = k[A]x[B]y[C]z if [B] & [C] = Constant then for two different initial concentrations of A we have AND
  7. 7. VANT HOFF DIFFERENTAIL METHOD As we know that, the rate of a reaction varies as the nth power of the concentration of the reactant where 'n' is the order of the reaction. Thus, for two different initial concentrations C1 and C2, equations can be written in the form . (1) And .(2) CONTINUE.
  8. 8. Taking logarithms, Subtracting Eq. (ii) from (i), or n = [log(-(dC1)/dt)-log((dC2)/dt)] [logC1 - log C2] ....(iii) -dc1/dt and -dc2/dt are determined from concentration vs. time graphs and the value of 'n' can be determined. CONTINUE .
