Question 2

Loren Aspinall

Ancillary texts

Ancillary texts are extremely important when it comes to advertisement of a film. The ancillary texts for our short film we found harder than others as the whole point of our film is a secret and we didn’t want this to be shown through either ancillary texts so we wanted to make our short film look exciting and appeal to the audience without having to give the point of our film away.

After we had completed our film i looked into different types of film posters sticking to the romance genre. Although i only reviewed one film poster i looked at many different ones to gather ideas and inspiration for our own. I looked into film posters for films such as 'The vow' and '(500) days of summer' What i noticed in these posters is the simplicity of them both, the only thing really giving anything away was the two main characters being together giving the audience an idea of the genre of film but not giving anything away about it..

Again, because of main character has a face deformity we found it difficult to be able to out her on the poster but found a clever way of being able to cover it up and have her on the front. We also decided not to have the male character on the poster as our film is primarily based on the girl and the fact she is lonely because of her confidence at the fact she has a facial deformity, we wanted to keep the fact she had me a boy a secret and a nice surprise for the audience as they watch our finished short film

How we made our film poster – step by step

The fact that the 'Like' and 'Share' cover Loren’s eyes and mouth help hide her real identity not only intriguing the audience but also showing them that she may be hiding something and that she may be scared to show her real self. It is to show she is hiding behind a 'mask' and the true reason for this is hidden all through-out the film and only shown at the end, this is why we wanted to keep it covered.

She is also holding the 'follow' which involves the character within the film.

The font used is simple therefore not distracting from the image on the poster so as you look at it you are looking at the character and film title, not anywhere else

The colours used are again plain and not distracting, we wanted to keep things on the poster as simple as possible to not distract from the fact Loren has a majority of her face missing so the audience can get a hint on what the film may be about.

I am extremely happy with our finished Film poster and feel it has all the elements within it to make it effective for the style and genre of our film.

All in all i feel it is simple yet effective while getting the main point of our film across, that this is a girl who has to hide for some unknown reason. This itself will attract the audience as in intrigues them to watch our film to find out why. This is one of the main points in why it is important to have well done ancillary texts to accompany your short film.

When it came to the radio trailer i feel we struggled on this more. As radio trailers are rare to come across it was hard to find inspiration but also because our film has very little dialogue which is obviously a main part of a radio trailer. We used clips of Loren’s voice overs to express the loneliness of this character but relied heavily on the radio trailer voice over to give a basic idea of the story line without giving too much away. All in all i was extremely happy with the finished radio trailer and feel it is effective for the film.

I feel both of our ancillary texts were successful and are extremely effective when it comes to selling our film. They are both simple yet get across the basic story line without giving the main part away, but at the same time still attracting our audience enough that they would like to come and watch it.
