same topic. • Word recognition increases one’s reading speed

• Adjusting To Words In Context:• Refers to the words and sentences that surrounds (precedes or follow)
any part of a discourse and that help to determine its meaning• In a broader sense, context may refer to any aspects of an occasion in
which a speech-act takes place, including the social setting and the status of both the speaker and the person who's addressed
• Think of context as place, situation, or environment• Key Point To Remember About Context - Please refer to pg. 22 on your
Study Guide or pg. 36 on your Prescribed Book for examples• in the case of individual words, context refers to words that come
immediately before or after • helps us to identify the specific meaning intended by author • refers to the broader social situation in which communication takes
place

• Homophones:• Words that are pronounced the same, e.g. meet
and meat.• Primarily a problem in one’s writing rather than in one’s
reading, they are a major cause of misspelling• Read in away that supports and enhance your knowledge
of spelling and grammar• Refer to page 38 on your Prescribed Book for example of
words frequently confused / homophones

• Connotation & Implication:• Words can affect one’s emotions, influence an
opinion, or set one thinking – this additional meaning of words are called connotation• Dictionary meaning of words is called denotation• As you read, part of mind is asking the implication
of such text you are reading, e.g. implication of petrol rise in food price, building material, and personal budget

• Reading @ Sentence Level• Four main sentences function:• directive – an instruction, order, request, or
command• statement – is a declaration• question – needs an answer• exclamation – minor sentences, many of them
have no verb

• Linking Words:• Good reader recognises the links between
statements• These connections are often signaled by the use of
a linking word or expression• Linking words acts as signposts that give a reader
helpful clues

• Punctuation and Meaning:• Have a big impact on people’s ability to read well• There are set of rules about how punctuation
should be used• Punctuation is logical and predictable • Positioning of punctuations can change the
meaning of every statement – refer to pg. 44 – 45 on your prescribed Book for examples

• skim the text quickly• set yourself a reading target, e.g. a page / minute• don’t read every single word separately• skip words or sentences occasionally• interact with the text by making notes or underlining• set your alarm early and start reading while the household is
quite and your mind is still fresh

• As a good reader, you will recognise thousands of words• Your eyes will move rapidly over the page• Use context to chose the right possible meaning of the words• With practice, one will be able to skim a text briefly and predict what it will be about
