In what ways does your media product use, develop or

challenge forms and conventions of real media

products?

For our media product we tried to develop the

conventions of existing products. To do this we started by looking at

different videos that would influence our work. These

videos included: Pond – You broke my cool, which had a

lot of cut shots and was possibly filmed on a super 8 film camera, or has a filter over it which was put in in

post production, which allows it to have a dream like characteristic which

matches the style in which the song is performed .We also looked at Tame Impala

– Feels like we only go backwards, which had a lot of animation in it but was

giving a similar affect to the Pond song in a way that it

wans’t real and was a psychedelic dream like

experience. We also looked at Temples – Shelter Song,

which is a performance based video but has many

lighting effects etc to create a stylized video that

doesn't’t have your regular band performance feel.

Once we had looked at these videos and analysed them we picked out common conventions. The first thing that instantly jumped to our attention was lack of narrative. The videos all had performances and extra video added but none of them had a strait forward storyline that you could follow that told a clear story. Listening to the music though this is not surprising as both the songs and the bands sound as a whole is up for interpretation, which lets the listener decide what the songs are about, rather than the band telling the listener a story. We tried to recreate this in our own video but we tried to do it in our own style and way so it we where not copying strait from our inspirations. So once inspired we tried to come up with our own style and how we wanted the song to be interpreted through the video we where going to create. We first looked at the long lyrics and realized that a wide range of idea could possibly fit the lyrics as they do not really tell a strait forward story. We then looked in to the music its self and we realized that it had a lot of backwards instruments etc so that was considered in the creation of the style and the video its self.

We kept to the convention by using a

very basic setup in the studio for the

performance-based part of the video

which stopped there from being any major distractions from the

music its self. We then added very dynamic shots of

landscapes etc using different effects to

add the interpretive narrative that we

found in some of the videos we looked at

previously which came from a mixture

of day and night shots which both met

the conventions of our inspirations and the lyrics of the song

we where creating the video for.

Another convention we found was

displayed in the videos we where

inspired by was use of lighting and

lighting effects to add a surreal feel to

the video. We developed this by using studio lights and light effects in postproduction to

add an atmosphere and an artistic spin to the shots. The studio within the

college aloud us to do this by creating a

space like feel where the

performance does not feel like it is in a

room with four walls.

In terms of similarities to our product and the average pop video, there isn’t many but that’s what we set out to achieve so I feel we have

achieved that aspect of our goal for our video. The average pop video could be described as advertising for the artist to sell records, but I feel

our video is quite the opposite of that and is there to purely enhance the listener’s experience of the song. This is done by visually intriguing

shots, which allow interpretation of the lyrics of the song.
