INFLUENCES Our main influence for our opening sequence was from The Ring. We watched the opening sequence for The Ring and gained an understanding of what was successful in an opening sequence. We gained ideas on music, lighting and camera angles.
We also used Paranormal Activity as an influence for our film as it features some of the main conventions of the supernatural genre including low key lighting, jump scares and intense, creepy music.
Although both these films are technically horrors, we will be taking the supernatural elements from them and using them to influence our film.
HOW?Genre conventions To suit our genre of paranormal thriller we have added the conventions like:
Having an innocent young girl as the victim. We will have a jump scare right at the end. We will have a build up of intense music leading up to the death of the victim. We will have low key lighting and flashing lights to create shadows and
underexposure. The house will be located away from others in a rural area.
HOW?Attracting target audience
Our target audience is young people therefore we have the age certificate at a 15.
It is about college students so our audience can relate to the film. We made it a 15 and not an 18 because if we were to have a high age restriction
that would reduce our audience range so less people would be able to watch it. This means we have to get the balance of how scary it is as it has to be suitable
for 15 year olds to watch. One way we will do this is by not showing the actual murder of the innocent. girl.
HOW?Mood/atmosphere creation
To create the atmosphere he have made it so the girl is in the house alone. We will use low key lighting to give it the scary atmosphere. Strange noises – creaking, banging and howling Intense creepy music. Lights flickering.
HOW – CAMERAWORK We will be using hand held camera shots to make it seem more realistic
and shaky going with the theme of our film. We will use close ups to show emotions like being scared and shocked. We will use long shots to show that there could be something looking at the
girl, such as looking through a window or at the end of a corridor. When it gets more intense the camera shots will be quicker.
