The electro magnetic pulse is in effect an

electromagnetic shock wave. This pulse of energy produces a powerful

electromagnetic field, particularly within thevicinity of the weapon burst.

The design of electromagnetic bombs is bothdiverse, and in many areas quite mature.

Key technologies which are extant in the area

are explosively pumped flux compressiongenerators, explosive or propellant drivenmagneto-hydrodynamic generators.

A wide range of experimental designs havebeen tested in these technology areas.

The explosively pumped FCG is the mosttechnology applicable to bomb designs.

The FCG is a device capable of producing

electrical energies of tens of mega joules in tensto hundreds of microseconds of time.

With peak power levels of the order ofterawatts to tens of terawatts.

The design of explosive and propellant drivenMagneto-Hydrodynamic generators is a muchless mature art that that of FCG design.

Technical issues such as the size and weight ofmagnetic field generating devices required forthe operation of MHD generators

Potential lies in areas such as start currentgeneration for FCG devices.

Whilst FCGs are potent technology base for thegeneration of large electrical power pulses

The output of the FCG is by its basic physics

constrained to the frequency band below1MHz.

HPM devices overcomes both of the problems,as focusing the energy output .

Better ability to couple energy into many targettypes.

Unlike the technology base for weapon

construction. which has been widely published in the open

To maximize the lethality of an electromagneticbomb it is necessary to maximize the powercoupled into the target set.

The first step in maximizing bomb lethality isto maximize the peak power

For a given bomb size, this is accomplished byusing the most powerful flux compression

generator (and Vibrator in a HPM bomb) which will fit the weapon size, and by

maximizing the efficiency of internal powertransfers in the weapon.

The limitations of electromagnetic weapons aredetermined by weapon implementation andmeans of delivery.

Weapon implementation will determine theelectromagnetic field strength achievable at agiven radius, and its spectral distribution.

Means of delivery will constrain the accuracywith which the weapon can be positioned inrelation to the intended target.

Both constrain lethality.
