FILM MAGAZINE RESEARCH …

Line at top of the magazine makes this magazine cover seem more appealing. The line portrays the magazines success and makes it overall more attractive to consumers.

Extra information is portrayed down the side of the magazine cover. The layout is neat and attractive as it isn’t too clustered.

A feature I have noticed on many magazine covers is that the bar code is placed at the bottom of the magazine in a neat and organised place. It keeps in line with the rest of the magazine.

There is a bar at the bottom of the magazine which shows extra features within the magazine. The font and style of the writing is easy to read and therefore is quite eye-catching. They add to the magazine making it more appealing and overall more interesting.

The title of the film is displayed clearly and therefore the consumer will find it easy to remember. The title is a major part of the magazine cover and it is important I make it as clear to see as possible.I have gained this knowledge from previous analysis as well.

The image makes direct eye contact with the consumer and the image is overall dominating the cover. This is another effective and popular feature I have found to work well and one I’ll definitely use in my own work.

The title of the magazine is placed behind the image. The helps to ensure the image is the main focus of attention.

The extra caption makes the magazine a lot more interesting and gives the consumer a taste of what the film will be about.

Mise en scene plays an important part in demonstrating the genre of the feature film.

Page 4: Presentation2h

Once again there is a caption above the title of the magazine itself. The caption makes the magazine more appealing and attractive.

Title stands out and the colours relate to the title of the magazine.

The mise en scene relates to the genre of the film. It helps to tie every other part of the magazine together.

The extra features are portrayed In an interesting way.

The extra films Portrayed are presented in acreative way and help create a powerful impact on the consumer.

The image doesn’t make eye contact with the consumer. I feel if the imagemakes eye contact with the consumer it makes more of an impact on them.

The title of the magazine is positioned behind the image. This ensures that the image is one of them most important features on the magazine.

DIRECT COMPARISON

Overall I prefer the ‘TOTAL FILM’ version then the EMPIRE one. Through my previous analysis I explained that ‘TOTAL FILM’ have included many attractive features that help make this magazine more appealing. Firstly, the title of the magazine is incorporated into the theme. The design makes it more attractive and more eye catching. I noticed the clever use of the red symbol ‘+’ has been used to indicate what else will be in the magazine. The colour scheme I feel works better on the ‘TOTAL FILM’ magazine and the overall magazine stands out far more.

Page 6: Presentation2h

The title of the magazine is again placed behind the image.

The layout is organised neatly on both sides of the magazine cover. The text varies in size and some features are emphasised more.

The colour scheme works well and is sustained throughout the cover. The text only appears in black and white and this helps create a striking and attractive cover.

The main image dominates this magazine entirely. The image is fully in the foreground of the cover and even the text is placed behind it. The mise en scene helps portray the genre extremely well and altogether makes the cover appealing.

The dates position along with for example the price is similar to many magazine covers I have analysed. I think by placing it by the magazine title it can be seen clearly.

Page 7: Presentation2h

This immediately grabs the consumers attention and helps make this cover more attractive. The line stands out and is in a large font which contrasts with the title of the magazine below.

The title of the featured film stands out clearly. However this time not as prominently. This is due to the almost faded colour. It doesn’t jump out at the consumer as much and I feel this feature is slightly more weak.

I’ve seen this feature used on a few magazine covers. I like the use of the symbol and feel I could use this on my own.

Eye contact is a powerful way of connecting with the consumer. I feel I will take away this feature for my own magazine cover.

The magazine title is placed behind the image which dominates the cover. I prefer the magazine title to be seen as I feel the image is a little overpowering.

There is quite a lot of empty space on this cover. I feel that although it is important the magazine isn’t too cluttered, a bar code or something should be here.

Page 8: Presentation2h

The colour scheme is striking . Contrasting colour are used which help the magazine to stand out.

The bar code ensures all space is used wisely and there aren’t any odd gaps on the magazine.

Mise en scene portrays genre of the featured film and helps make this magazine cover more attractive.

Eye contact is being made by the image which dominates the cover.

The magazine title is placed behind the image which is a common feature and allows the image to dominate the magazine cover..

Page 9: Presentation2h

The space is used wisely and effectively. The layout is organised and allows quite a few features on it without being too cluttered.

The bottom half of the cover is used in an interesting and creative way. The picture of ‘Sharon Stone’ doesn’t just stay restricted to the lower half but overlaps into the section by the featured film.

The style of the magazine cover font changes with each magazine. The EMPIRE text sometimes appears far more chunky and larger.. Again it Is placed behind the main image.

The title of the featured film is bold and stands out. It’s easy to read and is very eye-catching.

Main image makes direct eye contact with the consumer and the image shows a person almost trying to lean out of the magazine. This creates an even more eye catching image.

Page 10: Presentation2h

What have I learnt?• Image should make eye contact with consumer to draw them in more.• Image should dominate the cover.• Mise en scene is vital to portray genre.• Layouts need to be organised carefully to not appear as cluttered.• Colour scheme is important.• Title of featured film should be large and eye catching.
