COSMO-SkyMed Overview
• COSMO-SkyMed is the largest Italian investment in Space Systems for Earth Observation, a National Program conceived by Italian Space Agency (ASI) and funded byItalian Ministry of Research (IMUR) and Italian Ministry of Defence (IMOD)
• It is “natively” conceived as a Dual-Use (Civilian and Defence) end-to-end Earth Observation System

Summary
• COSMO-SkyMed is an operational monitoring system based on a number of SAR
satellite missions
• The main driver of the system is ensure continuity and reliability of operational
services
• The constellation guarantees long term Change Detection and very short term Activity
Monitoring
• Integration with SAOCOM will enrich the services provided with multi-band based
information (X & L)
• X-band Second Generation satellites will provide VHR multi-polarization capabilities >
adding target discrimination capabilities
• X-band Very High Resolution provides as well a deeper insight into forest texture
(foliage penetration)

Primary Objectives
• To provide data and service operational continuity to CSK mission with seamless transition
• To supply Earth Observation services through space-borne X-band SAR data and products that will meet the future operational needs of institutional (civilian/defense) users and commercial market
• To support ASI and I-MOD engagements in international cooperation, either civilian or defense, leveraging and improving the existing Interoperability, Expandability and MultiMission/Multisensor capabilities
• To capitalize the heritage of CSK (knowledge, experience, “lessons learned”, assets) and other relevant developments/investments
