(September 14, 2015) – West Virginia University senior Ryan Cain has been named the WVU Student-Athlete of the Week, presented by University Apartments. It was Cain’s third game-winning goal of his career and the first since 2013. The senior leads the team with four goals in five games this season. He also has posted a team-high 16 shots, including six on goal and eight points. He ranks in the top five in the MAC in total goals and shots per game. MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (September 14, 2015) – West Virginia University senior Ryan Cain has been named the WVU Student-Athlete of the Week, presented by University Apartments.

Cain recorded two goals on four shots in WVU’s 6-2 win over James Madison on Friday.

Cain notched his first goal just 2:14 into the game and less than a minute after WVU scored its first goal. His second goal of the game came 48 seconds after JMU got to within one as Cain faked left, then right and dribbled past the goalkeeper to notch the game-winner and put the Mountaineers up, 3-1.

It was Cain’s third game-winning goal of his career and the first since 2013. The senior leads the team with four goals in five games this season.

He also has posted a team-high 16 shots, including six on goal and eight points. He ranks in the top five in the MAC in total goals and shots per game.

This Week in Women’s Soccer: The No. 4/8 Mountaineers conclude their 2015 nonconference slate with two matches at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium … WVU plays host to Buffalo on Friday, Sept. 18, at 7 p.m., and Florida Gulf Coast on Sunday, Sept. 20, at 1 p.m. … Sunday is a “Dollar Day,” and all tickets and select concessions will be available for $1 each … Youth Soccer Day also is scheduled for Sunday, and all youth teams in attendance will have an opportunity to participate in a parade at halftime.

Last Week in Women’s Soccer: WVU (7-1) pushed its win streak to six and its shutout total to seven with a 2-0 win at RV/15 Ohio State on Sept. 11, and a 4-0 victory over Longwood on Sept. 13 at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium … the Mountaineers allowed just five shots by OSU and denied Longwood a shot … junior defender Kadeisha Buchanan scored the game-winner against the Buckeyes on a header in the 77th minute, while senior forward Kailey Utley tallied the insurance goal in the 78th minute … senior goalkeeper Hannah Steadman made three saves in the win … WVU returned to Morgantown and put forth an impressive defensive effort against the Lancers, possessing almost the whole match and denying Longwood a shot … sophomore forward Michaela Abam scored twice, including the game-winner in the 13th minute … Utley scored in the 18th minute, while Abam tallied another goal in the 24th minute and sophomore midfielder Carla Portillo added a score in the 50th minute, her first career goal.

Notes and Quotes: The Buckeyes became the fifth team this year to suffer its first loss of the season to the Mountaineers … all seven of the Mountaineers’ wins have been shutouts … Longwood was the third team this year to not get a shot on-goal against WVU … WVU had denied a shot against two opponents in as many seasons, and five times in program history … the Mountaineers have outshot their opponents 192-34 through eight games this season … WVU has defeated three Big Ten Conference foes this season and two ranked squads … Steadman’s three saves against OSU were a season high … Abam paced the field with a career-high 10 shots on Sunday … WVU earned a 12-0 edge in corner kicks against the Lancers … WVU is now 3-0 against first-time opponents this season.

This Week in Men’s Soccer: West Virginia is back on the road on Tuesday, Sept. 15, at Wright State, at 7 p.m. ... the match will be streamed on ESPN3 and the WatchESPN app ... WVU concludes the week at home with a Sunday matchup vs. Georgetown, at 4 p.m., on Sept. 20.

Last Week in Men’s Soccer: The WVU men’s soccer team posted a 6-2 win over James Madison on Sept. 11, after the Mountaineers began the week with a hard-fought 1-0 overtime loss at No. 22 Michigan State on Sept. 7 ... Friday’s win was the second time this season WVU responded to a 1-0 loss with a six goal showing the following match ... the Mountaineers jumped out with two goals in the first 2:14, thanks to an early red card on the JMU goaltender ... WVU played nearly the entire game with a man advantage after the JMU goaltender received a red card in the box at 1:07 ... sophomore Jad Arslan took advantage on the PK to put WVU ahead, 1-0 ... one minute and seven seconds later, senior Ryan Cain netted his first goal of the game on a shot inside the box on the right side to give West Virginia a 2-0 lead ... after JMU got to within one, West Virginia responded right back with a goal by Cain just 48 seconds later ... freshman Rushawn Larmond netted his second goal of the season at 38:28 to give the Mountaineers a 4-1 lead going into halftime ... junior Jack Elliott gave the Mountaineers a 5-1 edge at 55:00 when he scored his first goal of the year ... JMU scored in the 76th minute before WVU answered three minutes later ... credited as an own goal, Larmond sent a shot in off a free kick that deflected off of a James Madison defender into the back of the net.

Coach Marlon LeBlanc: “It was important for the confidence,” said coach LeBlanc, following Friday’s win against James Madison. “We changed some things up this week in terms of our approach. It’s good to see it come out, and it took a minute and ten seconds for us to show it. It was a good performance overall from the guys. There was still some things I would like to see us do better, but we will take the win and move on.”

This Week in Volleyball: The Mountaineers open their home slate on Tuesday when they host in-state foe Marshall in a 6 p.m. match, at the WVU Coliseum ... WVU is 28-19 all-time versus the Thundering Herd, though Marshall took last season’s contest, 3-0, in Huntington ... this weekend, the Mountaineers will head out on their fourth road trip in as many weeks when they travel to Rock Hill, South Carolina, for the Winthrop Invitational ... WVU will face the host Eagles, at 7 p.m., on Friday evening, before taking on Davidson at 10 a.m. Saturday, and closing the tournament with a 4:30 p.m. tilt against Murray State later that afternoon.

Last Week in Volleyball: WVU traveled to Hanover, New Hampshire, for the Dartmouth Tournament, hosted by the Big Green at Leede Arena ... Morgan Montgomery had a career-best 18 kills against Dartmouth on Friday, but it wasn’t enough as the Mountaineers fell to the Big Green, 3-1 ... Montgomery finished in double-digit kills the following evening with 13, while Caleah Wells added 11 in West Virginia’s 3-0 loss to former Big East foe UConn.

Notes and Quotes: Morgan Montgomery once again led WVU with 4.29 kills per set, ranking second in the Big 12 ... the sophomore outside hitter set a new career best for the third weekend in a row, recording 18 kills in the 3-1 loss to Dartmouth ... Montgomery also had 11 digs to notch her third double-double of the season.

Coach Reed Sunahara: “I thought we did a much better job of competing throughout the whole match,” said coach Sunahara, following the UConn match on Saturday. “We had opportunities that we didn’t capitalize on and that hurt us. Hopefully, we can build on this as an opportunity to get better.”

This Week in Golf: WVU remains in West Virginia as the teams travels to Huntington for the Joe Feaganes Marshall Invitational, hosted by the Thundering Herd on Monday and Tuesday at the Guyan Golf and Country Club ... the Mountaineers and the rest of the 16-team field will tee off in shot gun starts at 8:30 each morning, playing 36 continuous holes on Monday and just 18 holes on Tuesday.

Last Week in Golf: WVU golf teed off for the first time in more than 30 years at the Tiger Turning Stone Invitational, hosted by Missouri at Turning Stone Resort in Verona, New York ... the Mountaineers finished the first two rounds in seventh place, carding a 300-294=594 after 36 holes, but dropped to 10th place in the final round with a team score of 304 ... West Virginia posted a three-round team score of 898 to finish 34 over par ... a pair of individuals, Max Sear and Alan Cooke, recorded top-25 finishes in the event ... Sear finished T-16th with a score of 70-73-77=220 (+4), while Cooke was T-23rd after carding a 78-74-71=223 (+7).

Notes and Quotes: Max Sear posted a top-20 finish in his first career event for WVU, tying for 16th at the Tiger Turning Stone Invitational last weekend at the Turning Stone Resort in Verona, New York ... Sear shot 70-73 to sit in a tie for eighth place at +1 after the first two rounds of action, but carded a 77 in the third round to finish with a score of 220 for four over par ... his first round score of 70 (-2) is the lowest round for WVU thus far.

Coach Sean Covich: “Alan played well today, but the overall we had some struggles,” said WVU coach Sean Covich. “We are very disappointed in our finish but at the same time, this was our first event in over 30 years. For three of our guys, it was their first NCAA Division I event. We will learn from this experience and be ready for Marshall next week.”

This Week in Cross Country: The Mountaineers have a few weeks off before they travel to Louisville, Kentucky, to compete at the Greater Louisville Classic on Saturday, Oct. 3.

Last Week in Cross Country: The No. 10-ranked West Virginia cross country team placed third at the annual Harry Groves Spiked Shoe Invitational at University Park, Pennsylvania … redshirt senior Savanna Plombon raced for the first time since 2013 … she placed 12th overall (22:18), and was the first Mountaineers to cross the finish line … Rachel Faulds finished second for the Mountaineers, while placing 17th overall (22:41) ... Corinne Kule placed 19th (23:21), followed by Renee Maisonneuve in 20th (23:22) and Allie Diehl in 21st (23:24) … freshmen Peyton Panger and Olivia Hill ran unattached for WVU … Hill finished in 22:51, while Panger finished in 23:10. Coach Sean Cleary: “This meet displays that we still have the potential to be a very good team this fall, but also shows that we have a lot of work to tackle before we are where we want to be,” said coach Cleary, following the Harry Groves Spike Show Invitational. “With weeks to go until we line up again, it’s so important that the group accepts the work and discipline that lies ahead.”

This Week in Women’s Tennis: WVU cancelled the Mountaineer Invitational, its fall season home opener, which was scheduled from Sept. 18-20 ... the Mountaineers will now travel to Williamsburg, Virginia, to compete in the William and Mary Tribe Invitational from Sept. 18-20 ... the event will be played at different sites throughout the Williamsburg area, including the Millie West Tennis Facility, the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center and the Caf Tennis Courts ... the William and Mary Tribe Invitational consists of nine teams: No. 29 South Carolina, No. 31 Dartmouth, No. 49 William and Mary, No. 52 Marshall, No. 56 Old Dominion, No. 67 Maryland, VCU, Penn and West Virginia ... South Carolina, Dartmouth and host William and Mary appeared in the 2015 NCAA Tournament last season.

Last Season in Women’s Tennis: West Virginia concluded its 2015 with a 9-13 overall record ... the Mountaineers recorded nine straight wins for the first time since 2010, and marked its 450th progam win at Toledo on Jan. 31 ... West Virginia competed against-nine ranked opponents last season ... sophomore Carolina Lewis was the first player since 2003 to tally 20-singles wins in a season, ending her freshman campaign with a 24-6 singles record ... three Mounainteers earned Big 12 distinctions as sophomore Lyn Yuen Choo and senior Hailey Barrett were named to the Academic All-Big 12 First Team, while junior Kaja Mrgole landed on the second team ... the squad was named an Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) All-Academic Team for the second consecutive year, and Barrett was tabbed as an ITA Scholar-Athlete for the 2015 season. Notes & Quotes: Coach Miha Lisac added five newcomers to the roster for the 2015-16 season: Abigail Rosiello, Hannah Cseplo, Habiba Lasheen, Kirsten White and Paula Goetz ... he also hired West Virginia native Emily Harman as an assistant coach ... a native of Petersburg, West Virginia, Harman spent three years on the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) Tour as a professional athlete ... she obtained career-high WTA world rankings of No. 232 in doubles and No. 966 in singles.
