A Message from Our MaestroThere have been three times in my professional tenure at Troy High School where excep-tional performance opportunities were afforded to the concert and symphonic bands aswell as the jazz ensemble - those that many, if not most, high school musicians will neverget to experience. In 2004, the bands took the stage at Carnegie Hall and in 2007, trav-eled in London to perform in multiple exquisite concert venues, as well as march in theNew Year’s Day parade. Nine years later, in 2016, the bands submitted an application, recordings, videos and a group resume to Distinguished Concerts International New York(DCINY) in hope of being selected for a featured, full-length concert slot at Lincoln Center. That hope has become a reality and we couldn’t be more pleased to represent Michigan, the City of Troy, and the Troy School District serving as musical ambassadors. Thank youWorldStrides and DCINY staff!

Many profound shared experiences have unfolded in the band room as we enthusiasti-cally worked to prepare for this special night in the Big Apple. Because the Troy Bands tra-ditionally travel in the month of April, one of the greatest challenges was posed by theMarch 24 performance date. An entire month of rehearsal time was lost. Student anddirector led sectionals, volunteer coachings by local professionals - along with intensedetermination, focus and drive - aided in obliterating these and all other obstacles. Animmeasurable musical transformation has occurred as inspired by this ambitiousendeavor.

Boosters also joined hands to assist in this massive undertaking. Additional funds wereraised to allow all band members a top-quality experience. Parent volunteers worked tire-lessly to organize all trips details. The students and I do not take for granted the excep-tional instrumental music support structure (on parent and administrative levels) consis-tently paving the way for our successes. Troy Bands strive for a world class status, andunwavering support on every side helped bring this goal to fruition.

As for the program, several unique and thrilling collaborations are sure to create an extra-ordinary listening and viewing experience. Three (yes, three!) world premieres writtenspecifically for this occasion will be debuted-including original compositions by RickDeJonge and senior, Tyler Bouque, as well as an arrangement by Kris Johnson. We alsoproudly present guest artists, saxophonist Marcus Elliot (Troy Jazz artist-in-residence), andbagpiper, Albert Gonzales. Finally, prepare to be dazzled as you witness yet another pre-miere - the performance of newly commissioned choreography as delivered by membersof the Eisenhower Dance Ensemble.

Our Lincoln Center venture is not about ratings, medals, trophies or competition. This per-formance is about setting new musical standards, making ourselves fully vulnerable to themusic, attaining new heights of achievement, and stepping into an ineffable place of musi-cal fulfillment. Our aim remains to present music as it was intended – food for mind, bodyand soul…inspiration for life. The students and I are honored to have this opportunity andgrateful to share our passion with you. Thank you for joining us tonight for this once-in-a-lifetime musical extravaganza. Enjoy the concert and may you leave inspired!

Unified Toward Musical Greatness,

Brian P. Nutting

Notes on the ProgramNotes by Brian P. Nutting

New York State of Mind, Joel - Firstrecorded by Billy Joel in 1976, New YorkState of Mind, has become a fan favoritewhich boasts countless covers from adiverse range of artists such as FrankSinatra, Tony Bennett, Barbra Streisand,The Muppets and Glee. This bluesy treat-ment features a small group on the verseand later a swingin’ full ensemble chorus.

Body and Soul, Heyman, Sour, Eyton &Green - Body and Soul was written in NewYork City for the British actress and singerGertrude Lawrence, who introduced it toLondon audiences. Published in England, itwas first performed in the United States byLibby Holman in the 1930 Broadway revueThree’s a Crowd. By the end of 1930 atleast eleven American bands had recordedit. Louis Armstrong was the first jazz musi-cian to record Body and Soul, in October1930 but it was Paul Whiteman and JackFulton who popularized it in United States. With a Kenton-esque rubato introduction,Wolpe’s arrangement proceeds with a bal-lad style and a hard-swinging double timesection. With some great ensemble writ-ing, after some solo space, the chartreturns to the ballad tempo leading intotwo fermatas creating a dramatic ending.

Let’s Call the Whole Thing Off, Gershwin- Written by George Gershwin and IraGershwin for the 1937 film Shall WeDance, it was introduced by Fred Astaireand Ginger Rogers as part of a celebrateddance duet on roller skates. The song ismost famous for its “You like to-may-toesand I like to-mah-toes” and other versescomparing their different regional dialectsor differences in class. Nelson Riddle’sarrangement was written for Ella Fitzgeraldfocusing on the Gershwin songbook fea-tures a rubato introduction with vocalistand guitar before breaking into the melodyin a medium swing setting.

Ten Brothers, Bunnell - This piece, a playon the blazing 1947 Four Brothers byJimmy Giuffre, was made famous by theWoody Herman orchestra. It is highlightedby a fast-paced swinging saxophone sec-tion feature with an extended saxophonesoli and heavy hitting brass section.

The Boy from New York City, Davis,Thomas - This piece was originallyrecorded in 1964 by the American soulgroup The Ad Libs. The song was later cov-ered by Darts and The Manhattan Transfer, both becoming chart hits in the UK and USrespectively. This arrangement was writ-ten specifically for the Troy High JazzEnsemble by founding Troy High Schooljazz artist-in-residence, Kris Johnson.

Forest Devil Waltzes, Welcher - ForestDevil Waltzes was composed for a celebra-tion commemorating the 80th birthday ofKarl Kraber, retired Professor of Flute at theUniversity of Texas at Austin and a found-ing member of the Dorian Wind Quintet. This work is a collection of waltz tunes byEmil Waldteufel, whose name translates as“Forest Devil.” The melodies are primarilyfrom Les Patineurs (The Skaters), in no par-ticular order or key, but are also drawn fromToujours ou Jamais (Ever or Never) and AuRevoir.

Sedona, Reinke - Sedona captures inmusical ideas the natural landscape ofmountains and wide open spaces, to painta musical canvas that is at once bold, enter-taining, and filled with life. A short, memo-rable theme runs throughout the work, showing up in a delicate flute solo, an intri-cate woodwind fugue, a warm trombonesolo, and a bold, triadic trumpet statementthat will pick you up right out of your seat.

Florentiner March, Fucík/Bourgeois –With over 400 marches, polkas, andwaltzes written mainly for military bands,Czech composer Julius Fucík is sometimesreferred to as the “Bohemian Sousa.” Borninto a musical family, he was an accom-plished bassoonist and studied composi-tion with Antonín Dvorák. He was a band

director in Prague and his weekly concertsdrew thousands of happy listeners. TheFlorentiner, Grande March Italiana, waswritten in 1900. Its original title was LaRosa di Toscana, which was the appellationof the Tuscan city of Florence.

Amazing Grace, Dawson - Amazing Graceis a sacred hymn published in 1779, withwords written by the English poet andAnglican clergyman John Newton (1725–1807). Written from Newton’s personalexperiences, the song brings a messagethat forgiveness and hope. Jay Dawson’sarrangement makes use of the full range ofsymphonic colors as he evokes musicalimages of this beloved melody. From gen-tleness to powerful grandeur, this is a veryemotional composition for band.

New York: 1927, Barker - The “RoaringTwenties” were carefree and irresistibletimes. Fanciful technological develop-ments - like the automobile, radio, andsound motion pictures - were in theirinfancy and contributed to the excitementand jubilance of the day... New York: 1927is a musical snapshot of this colorful andmerry time. The opening Ragtime depictsthe prosperous and carefree spirit of thetimes. Blues rhapsodizes wistfully andwhimsically in roaring twenties fashion.Manhattan Mayhem cleverly creates a typ-ical busy street scene at a midtown inter-section, perhaps at Fifth Avenue and Thirty-Fourth Street, as cars weave in and around, police whistles shriek in attempted jurisdic-tion, and a barrage of pedestrians scurryonward. - Andrew Glover

Ruckus, Standridge - ruck us [ruhk-uh s]noun a noisy commotion; fracas; rumpus:Ruckus is a piece for concert band that issupposed to be just what its title implies:loud, boisterous, and aggressive. Themixed meter, heavy percussion, andthumping rhythm give this piece a decid-edly urban feel.

On the Blue Line: A Saxophone’s Guideto New York City, Bouque - Written byTroy High student musician, Tyler Bouque,

On the Blue Line guides you through somefamous New York City subway stops. Thepiece begins with an Overture. At thatpoint you are taken to the first stops on thismusical journey, The Central Park Carousel, followed by Broadway, with homage toBarry Manilow’s, Bandstand Boogie. Thenext stop is Ground Zero which gives theaudience a pause for a moment of reflec-tion followed by Times Square. This saxo-phone journey concludes with the GrandFinale quoting the ever famous New York,New York.

The Spirit of Troy!, DeJonge - The TroyHigh School Symphonic Band commis-sioned this piece for this Lincoln Center per-formance. Rick DeJonge’s fanfare is reminis-cent of different musical influences. If youlisten closely, you will hear the Troy ColtFight Song woven throughout the piece.

Symphony No. 3, Movement I, Pesante eMolto Sostenuto, Reed - Commissioned bythe United States Air Force Band, SymphonyNo 3 is written in three movements. Theopening, pesante e molto sostenuto, suc-ceeded by a hard driving allegro agitato, highly tense and dissonant in character.Symphony No. 3 represents a summation ofAlfred Reed’s approach to the modern, fullyintegrated wind/brass/percussion ensembleand the exploitation of its many-facetedpotential for large-scale, serious writing.

Prelude #1, Rosauro - Three Preludes forSolo Marimba was one of composer NeyRosauro’s very first compositions formarimba. His works are among the mostbeautiful pieces in the marimba literature. Each prelude is based on a differenttheme: #1 is based on a Spanish flamencotheme, #2 is based on a Brazilian theme inthe style of Villa Lobos’ guitar pieces, and#3 is roll-based in a choral style, with someintricacies in the middle.

On the Town - Three Dance Episodes, III.Times Square, 1944, Bernstein - The1944 musical On the Town representsLeonard Bernstein’s first venture onto theBroadway stage. Inspired by his successful

ballet Fancy Free, the musical follows theadventures of three sailors on shore leavein New York City and is focused around aseries of dance episodes, three of whichBernstein selected for an orchestral suite.Long unavailable for band, this 2016 editionis beautifully transcribed by Paul Lavender.

Danzón No. 2, Márquez - Originally writ-ten for orchestra, Danzón No. 2 hasenjoyed significant popularity on perfor-

mance programs everywhere. The rhyth-mic interest in the piece is maintainedthrough the use of varying accents andtempi. This staple of the contemporaryMexican music literature expresses andreflects on the dance style named danzón,which has its origins in Cuba from a naturalsynthesis of Spanish, British, and Frenchdance forms but is a very important part ofthe folklore of the Mexican state ofVeracruz.
