Love Letters

June 8 - 24, 2018

Welcome

Presents

The Tabard TheaTre company

From Cathy Spielberger Cassetta, Artistic Director

Ilf you’ve been coming to Tabard for a while, you know that I love doing things for the first time — or the first time for Tabard. And this production of Love Letters laccomplishes that. This production is the first time that we have three separate

casts alternating performances. And we six who comprise the three casts, plus director Doug Baird, are all connected, having worked together before. Here’s our far-less-than 6 degrees of separation — all that to say, for those of us in Love Letters, performing in this show is a love letter of friendship and connection between us.

I’ve only included when someone has been an actor or director with another Love Letters actor or Doug. The earliest connection is from 1974 (Leslie and Tim). Names of people are listed in alpha order. The only two who have not done any shows together before are Kurt and Tim. And now they sort of are...! I’ve put in bold the Love Letters pairs of actors to give you an insight into our past working relationship with our scene partners and in italics our connection to our director.

Total number of productions: 407 shows: Doug & Tim 6 shows: Cathy & Leslie; Doug & Leslie5 shows: Cathy & Tim; Doug & Kevin; Leslie & Tim 4 shows: Karen & Leslie3 shows: Cathy & Doug; Cathy & Kurt; Doug & Karen; Kevin & Leslie 2 shows: Cathy & Karen; Kevin & Tim1 show: Cathy & Kevin; Doug & Kurt; Karen & Kevin; Karen & Kurt; Karen & Tim; Kevin & Kurt; Kurt & Leslie

Thank you for being part of our connection. I hope you will come back to see at least one other Love Letters couple. And if you’re not already a subscriber for our 18th season, themed Snapshots: Capturing Life’s Special Moments, please consider joining our 400+ other subscribers to experience four fabulous musicals and two very funny comedies next season.

From Nick Nichols, Executive Director

As we conclude Tabard’s 17th season with this marvelous production of Love Letters, we want to thank you, our patrons and donors, for your support nthroughout the year. With a new name for our theatre (Tabard Theatre), a new

urban village next door, a beautiful new paseo soon to come, and — of course — next year’s great line-up of shows, programs, and events, Tabard Theatre is excitedly stepping into our future! For over 17 years the key ingredient to all of this has been YOU! Your patronage and support are what enables us to provide our community with great plays, educational programs, and so much more. We hope you will continue to support Tabard by making a tax-deductible donation before June 30th. With shrinking arts funding at the federal and state level, we need you now — more than ever — to help Tabard Step into Our Future! You will find donations envelopes around the theatre or go to www.tabardtheatre.org/donations/. Thank you and enjoy the show!

Explore new horizons. Tabard.

Love Letters was presented at The Long Wharf Theatre,M. Edgar Rosenblum, Executive Director; Arvin Brown, Artistic Director.

Love Letters is produced by special arrangement with Dramatists Play Service, Inc., New York.

Karen DeHart is delighted to return to Tabard, having previously appeared in Miracle on 34th Street and It’s A Wonderful Life. Karen has performed with many local theaters, including City Lights Theater Company, South Bay Musical Theatre, and Broadway by the Bay. She was recently in Alabama Story at City Lights, playing Emily Reed. Karen has been a Theatre Bay Area nominee for Mrs. Higgins in My Fair Lady at Broadway by the Bay and Tessie Tura in Gypsy at South Bay. Karen has been on stage since she was 13 and counts Love Letters as her 90th production to date!

Kevin Kirby is glad as always to be back on Tabard’s stage and working again with director Doug Baird, whom he directed several years ago in A.R. Gurney’s The Dining Room at Studio Theatre of California. Kevin’s most recent Tabard credits include Miracle on 34th Street (Fred Gailey), The Cemetery Club (director), and The Miracle Worker (Doctor/Anagnos). Next season, Kevin will appear on Tabard’s stage in The Explorers Club and will direct Another Roll of the Dice and Beau Jest.

Leslie Lloyd lists her favorite Tabard roles as the title role in Edith Stein, Olivia in Mr. Pim Passes By, and Dorothea Lange in More Than Petticoats. Credits elsewhere include Mrs. Eysnford-Hill (My Fair Lady, Broadway by the Bay); Effy (Spitfire Grill, Palo Alto Players); Mame (Mame, WVLO Musical Theatre); and Frankie (Frankie and Johnny in the Clare du Lune) and Karen (Scrambled Eggs) for Northside Theatre, sharing the stage with her actor husband, Jerry. Leslie is a 7th-generation Californian and head of Theatre Arts at Homestead High in Cupertino.

Tim Reynolds is pleased to return to Tabard Theatre, having previously appeared in productions including Adrift in Macao (Mitch), Peter and the Starcatcher (Slank/Hawking Clam), Violet (Man 2), The Story of My Life (Thomas), and Follies (Ben Stone). Next season he’ll perform here in Snapshots. Tim’s favorite role to date is that of Dad to Arabelle, Libby, Site, Khali, Bandit and, of course, the pillow pillaging perfect puppy — Kiana. Thanks to Maegan for her love and support while I go out to play! Maybe next time Arabelle will come with me!

Doug Baird (Director) is a Tabard associate artistic director and previously directed Adrift in Macao; Mom’s Gift; Musical of Musicals (The Musical!); I Do! I Do!; Tuesdays With Morrie; Starting Here, Starting Now; Looking Over the President’s Shoulder; and Driving Miss Daisy. Other recent directing credits include Irene; Bells Are Ringing; Mame; and My Fair Lady at WVLO Musical Theatre. Doug is also an award-winning actor, having appeared in Hairspray; Cabaret; Hello, Dolly!; South Pacific; The Pajama Game; Pippin; and 42nd Street, to name a few. His next Tabard project is directing next season’s Snapshots.

John DiLoreto (Sound Designer) counts over 100 theatre productions as a sound designer and musician. As Tabard’s chief audio engineer and resident sound designer, John has designed sound for over 40 Tabard shows as well as productions for TheatreWorks, City Lights, Sunnyvale Community Players, Children’s Musical Theater, South Bay Musical Theatre, WVLO Musical Theatre, Palo Alto Players, and Hillbarn. He is also a former record producer, recording studio owner, and keyboardist/vocalist in numerous rock bands. While at M.I.T., he studied acoustics with Professor Amar Bose, and he holds an M.Eng. from U.C. Berkeley and an M.B.A. from Stanford. By day, he is Tabard’s operations director. John will design sound for most of Tabard’s main stage shows next season.

A. R. Gurney (Playwright) has authored dozens of plays and musicals including The Dining Room, Richard Cory, Sylvia, and, of course, Love Letters. His libretto for Strawberry Fields, with music by Michael Torke, was part of the Central Park Opera trilogy presented by the New York City Opera; his novels include The Gospel According to Joe, Entertaining Strangers, and The Snow Ball. Awards include Drama Desk, N.E.A., Rockefeller Foundation, New England Theatre Conference, Lucille Lortel, American Association of Community Theatres, and American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters. He is the husband of one, father of four, and grandfather of six.

Nick Nichols (Lighting Designer) is Tabard’s executive director and also the resident lighting consultant, designing lighting for many of Tabard’s productions since he joined Tabard in 2014. Before moving into arts management, Nick spent 20 years working as a lighting designer and/or technical director for Villanova Summer Shakespeare, Princess Cruise Lines, Ballet San Jose, and American Musical Theatre of San Jose. Nick holds an M.F.A. in technical direction/lighting design from Temple University and has taught lighting and technical theatre at Santa Clara University, San Jose State, and U.C. Santa Cruz. Next season he will design lights for both Another Roll of the Dice and Queen of the Mist.

Joan Rubin (Stage Manager / Board Operator) is managing her tenth show for Tabard, following Adrift in Macao; Mom’s Gift; Musical of Musicals (the Musical!); Edith Stein; I Do! I Do!; Tuesdays with Morrie; Starting Here, Starting Now; Making God Laugh; and Looking Over the President’s Shoulder — and next season will return for Snapshots. She has stage-managed a dozen shows for Woodside Players and Woodside Community Theatre, as well as many for Saratoga Drama Group / South Bay Musical Theatre. She notes that this has been a hilarious and pleasurable experience working with these actors and staff of Tabard.
