Welcome

Presents

The Tabard TheaTre company

From Cathy Spielberger Cassetta, Artistic Director

Wlelcome to Tabard’s production of 10 in 10: 2017! This project has been exciting in every way.

We began last spring with an invitation to local emerging artists of all ages to submit two-dimensional work from which 16 pieces would be selected by a panel of judges to be available to local early career playwrights as inspiration for a new ten-minute play. 35 works of art were submitted. In June we had an artists reception attended by artists, playwrights, directors, actors, arts patrons, theatre patrons, and other folks who were just plain curious about what we were doing, at which we displayed all 16 pieces.

In July, we received 42 ten-minute plays that were reviewed by a panel of judges. In July we also received applications from early career directors. The 10 directors were selected in August, auditions were in September, and directing workshops were offered in October. Rehearsals for some of the plays began in November. Others began their process in January. The result: seven paintings, 10 plays, 17 actors. An exciting aspect that evolved is that of the final selected plays: three of them were inspired by the same art piece, and two others had another artpiece in common as inspiration. It will be fun to see very different plays inspired by the same works of art. Art inspires Art inspires Art.

Of our 35 submitted works of art, two were created by men and women of Elmwood Correctional Facility; both pieces were part of the 16 semi-final works. One of them, Metamorphoses, inspired Richard Lau to write Butterflies. The cast of this play had the privilege of performing this work at Elmwood in early January, a rewarding experience for us as well as for the Elmwood artists who collaborated to create Metamorphoses. The designated non-profit for 10 in 10: 2017 is the Correctional Institutions Chaplaincy Art & Spirit program through which Metamorphoses was created. This program provides the creative opportunity for inmates to explore their imagination as well as to work collaboratively with others.

Journey of the heart. Tabard.

This production of 10 in 10: 2017 is dedicated to Joyce Taylor, who unexpectedly passed away in late November. Joyce was the original director for the ten-minute play The Water Temple and had already begun rehearsals with her cast. Concurrently, she was stage-managing Tabard’s production of A Dickens of A Christmas Mashup. Although she stage-managed four Tabard productions (A Dickens of A Christmas Mashup, Crowns, Swift Justice, Miracle on 34th Street),

assistant stage-managed one (Memphis), and had a supporting role in another (The Best Christmas Pageant Ever), Tabard audiences may remember her most from her touching portrayal of the matron in Homeward Bound: An Orphan Train Journey. In addition to her work at Tabard and her day job at IBM, Joyce was part of Cathedral of Faith’s World of Arts ministry for 20 years, where she performed in a variety of dramas with roles from narrator to demon. For the last 10 years, she was the Drama Ministry Director, directing and managing COF’s large-scale Christmas and Easter productions, as well as dramas and scripture readings for weekend services. Joyce was the consummate professional: detail-oriented, firm, responsible — I could go on. She was also kind, generous, and able to extend compassion to everyone with whom she interacted. Joyce knew time was precious and used every minute she had. She lived life to the fullest every day, every hour, every minute with activities that filled her life and heart and, thus, touched the lives of everyone she met. Few things, though, sparked the light in her eyes like theatre. All of us at Tabard are grateful she chose to play with us. We are each better for having had Joyce choose to be part of our lives. — Cathy Spielberger Cassetta

Love has led her to move to California, where she continues to pursue her professional acting career. She appears in two of this year’s 10 in 10 plays at Tabard: The Guardians and The Anniversary Portrait.

Camille Bayer is a second-grader at Schallenberger Elementary. Camille developed a love of theater thanks to her big brother, Miles. Favorite past roles include Disney’s 101 Dalmatians (Pepper), Disney’s Cinderella (Perla the Mouse), Pinocchio (Daughter/Narrator), and The Nutcracker Ballet (Cherub). In her free time, Camille likes to read, do gymnastics, take part in Brownies and play with friends. Camille is performing in her second Tabard production, following A Dickens of a Christmas Mashup.

Becky White Brownson appears in her second show with Tabard; her first was our all-female production of 1776. Becky began doing theater in the Bay Area when she moved here from New York in the early 1980s. She has appeared with San Jose Civic Light Opera, TheatreWorks, Saratoga Drama Group, West Valley Light Opera, Lyric Theater, and Sunnyvale Community Players. She was most recently seen as Mrs. Paroo in Lyric’s The Music Man. She is grateful for the support of her husband Don.

Caitie Clancey is excited to return to Tabard in her second 10 in 10! Previous roles include Young Woman Scrooge in A Christmas Carol at Northside Theatre Company, Maggie in Dancing at Lughnasa, Dr. Purgeon in The Imaginary Invalid, and Mitch Mahoney in The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee.

Yousuf Fauzan is excited to make his American stage debut with Tabard’s production of 10 in 10: 2017. Previous experience includes work with Banjara Theatre Group in Mumbai, India. An engineer by day, he is a theatre enthusiast who especially enjoys the production process and being around creative people, noting that, “One learns so much in a very short span.”

Lacey Bryant is an oil painter and scenic artist working in the Bay Area. She has been painting for about 10 years. She paints stage sets and haunted houses for Great America and spends the rest of her time working on oil paintings which she displays at galleries in San Francisco, Los Angeles, and beyond.

Elmwood Correctional Facility Inmates created the work for Butterflies, titled Metamorphosis, through the Art and Spirit program offered by Correctional Institutions Chaplaincy. In three two-hour sessions focused on transformation, approximately 60 men and women collaborated to transform pages from the California Penal Code into origami butterflies, then collaged and painted new, colorful, life-filled entities. “This Transformation theme helped me put a lot of things into perspective. I feel so much more hopeful and positive about my future. If an ugly caterpillar can transform into a butterfly, I feel empowered, inspired, and humbled. It makes me believe I, too, can transform from a lost soul and live my life with purpose,” said one Elmwood participant.

Thong Le is an impressionist painter and portraitist who paints landscapes, still life, abstract, and portraits using oils and canvas. He especially likes portraits because he enjoys watching human faces and translating emotion. His work has won numerous awards from art associations across the Bay Area. He has sold his work through Zatista, Saatchi, Fine Arts America, and local galleries. He still considers himself a student and labors to find new modes of expression daily.

Masha Schultz is an international artist from the USSR. She attended art school in Moscow and is consistently taking art classes in the Bay Area where she has lived for the last 20 years. Using the vibrant colors and contrast of light and shadow, she is an emerging artist expressing perceptions before nature, especially landscapes.

Teague Shattuck is a 16-year-old artist and aspiring animator. She spends seven hours every day drawing and hopes to be the best she can! She would love to be admitted to CalArts in the future and work as a storyboard/conceptual artist for Disney or Cartoon Network. Teague’s favorite media are watercolor and water-soluble pencils. Her art piece for this production is very close to her, and she’s thrilled to have it be a part of Tabard’s 10 in 10: 2017. Enjoy the art and the show!

Alexis Snyder, a local artist, began practicing art as a child when her mom threw all her toys away and replaced them with art supplies. In high school, she began to work with acrylic paints. A year ago, after a four-month hike on the Pacific Crest Trail, she began pursuing her art career painting theater sets and selling personal artwork as prints, commissions, and original paintings. Tabard audiences have seen her art on many of Tabard’s sets.

Joan Spencer is a fabric artist with a degree from San Diego State. She has begun a second career after retiring as a teacher. Eight years ago she learned to quilt and has shown her designs in fabric art work in several exhibits and has shown her series “Quilts of Faith” in different venues.

Kelly Endersby is delighted to be making her debut with Tabard Theatre as the playwright of The Guardians. Recent writing credits include four short plays for Foothill College’s Brown Bag Theater as well as the novel The Fifth Sun, which is published by Trail Media under her pseudonym K.S. Miranda and available at Amazon.

Craig S. Engen produced his original play Shakespeare Three Ways at Theatre on San Pedro Square and had four original one-act plays produced in California. He has performed twice at Tabard, in The Elves and the Shoemaker and It’s a Wonderful Life. He has directed two staged readings (Six Plays in Search of an Actor and Sing Brightly from a Dark Space), one-acts entitled Amallama and Low Down Uptown, Acts I and II of his three-act radio play, and a workshop of his selected works; he is currently directing the one-act On the Harmful Effects of Tobacco by Chekov.

Richard Lau, having just started playwriting, has had two of his ten-minute plays performed as readings and one ten-minute play produced. He would like to thank Tabard for this wonderful program and the directors, actors, and crew for the opportunity to see his plays on stage.

Andrew Marshall has worked on several Tabard productions. As a stage manager and technical director, he has worked on The Elves and the Shoemaker; 1776; Farewell, Fitzgerald; Love, Laughter, and Linguine; and The Best Christmas Pageant Ever. As a playwright, his previous play was I of the Beholder, part of Tabard’s 10 in 10: Perspective in 2014. He is also the writer-director of the short film Savepoint. He is currently working on a novel.

Vijay M. Rajan has been writing and directing films (short and feature), commercials, and corporate videos for the past 15 years. He has always loved theater, and saw 10 in 10 as an opportunity to try his hand at being a playwright and stage director. His play The Red Hallway is based on the struggles of many artist friends, and he brings his love of working with child actors to his direction of Besties.

Jeff Swan is excited to see the words of Walk On brought to life on stage. His play HOV POW was performed with Piedmont Players and Friends of the Library, Guerneville. Jeff is just finishing up his first full-length play, A Man’s Man. Last seen at Tabard on stage in Swift Justice and several years ago in Antigone in the Oval Office, Jeff thanks his amazing proofreader, Beth, for all of her help and support.

Angela Cesena has directed several children’s productions at Tabard, including summer theater camp for Disney’s Cinderella and Disney’s Aristocats, and Tabard’s Boys & Girls Club of San Jose program productions of Disney’s Cinderella and Disney’s The Jungle Book. Angela directed and produced at Los Gatos Christian School, including Jonah and the Whale, Christmas Around the World, Christmas Nativity, and Dinner Theater Puss In Boots. She also vocal-directed for Christian Youth Theater Santa Cruz’s production of The Jungle Book.

She has created and/or written and directed a handful of productions for Tabard, including the most recent Homeward Bound: An Orphan Train Journey. Nick holds an M.F.A. in technical direction/lighting design from Temple University and has taught lighting and technical theatre at Santa Clara University, San Jose State, and U.C. Santa Cruz.

Hannah Thrasher (Stage Manager, Board Operator) has a B.A. in radio/TV/film from San Jose State and is happily making her Tabard debut. Our Mission Statement: Tabard’s mission is to provide enlightening theatre experiences which are appropriate and affordable for audiences of all ages. We champion new works, innovative interpretations, and unique plays rarely produced. Tabard is an inclusive environment where the community can participate in every area of the plays, musicals, educational programs, and music concerts we produce. With a focus on altruism, Tabard reaches out to the under-served, such as the blind/visually impaired and children in low-income areas, and donates a portion of each production’s concession proceeds to a designated local charity.
