PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
welcome to the 2011 CSC annual Awards Gala. we are here
tonight to honour and celebrate outstanding achievements and contributions to the art of cinematography.
These are exciting times in which we live. The changes to our film and television industry and how we approach our work are profound and fascinating. From 3d to virtual sets, from innovative workflow concepts to ground-breaking cameras, new and inventive
technological advancements seem to happen at the speed of light and are around every corner.
“Keeping on top of your game” is a major challenge for today’s cinema- tographer. However, taking these new technological and production advancements and bending them to our will to produce masterful, creative visions is exhilarating and rewarding. Tonight’s nominee clips stand as testaments to the brilliance of cinematographers and their versatility in adopting these modern tools for their craft and artistry.
The CSC never strays far from its founding objective, “to promote and foster the art of cinematography”. we continue to follow our credo and stay in sync with the times through our education programs and workshops, special screenings, pertinent sessions with industry professionals, Canadian Cinematographer magazine, these wonderful awards galas and through strategic alliances with our sponsors. The CSC focus is firmly committed to cinematography and its future.
Sponsorship is very important to the CSC. It is our life blood and without our gracious sponsors, events such as tonight would only be a wish. Their support is necessary and vital to the CSC. I thank all of our sponsors for their generosity and commitment to the CSC and its endeavours, and above all, their commitment to cinematography.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
The triumph of an event such as tonight’s gala does not happen on its own. It involves the hard work and dedication of a whole cast of people devoting many hours and effort to the project. The gala’s success, as with all our events, is directed by a working executive board of volunteers of which I am proud to be a member. For all of us on the CSC executive, it is a labour of love which is fulfilling and rewarding on many levels. I would like to thank the CSC Executive director Susan Saranchuk, whose sense of style, leadership and administrative ability have become legendary at the CSC, for producing another magnificent awards gala. I would also like to thank Karen Longland for all her hard work and effort in helping produce tonight’s show. we are grateful to all the members of this year’s juries for their expertise and donating their time in choosing tonight’s nominees and winners. It’s a difficult undertaking and I thank you. A very special thanks to the 2011 awards committee, co-chair robert Bocking csc, co-chair John Hodgson, Bert dunk csc, asc and George Hosek csc. To everyone involved, your efforts as always, are much appreciated!
But most important of all, this evening is a celebration of the talents and accomplishments of this year’s awards nominees. I congratulate all of you and we are all very proud of you!
To everyone, please enjoy the show and have a wonderful evening. Joan Hutton csc

It was his hard work and skill during his tenure with the CSC that led to the birth of Canadian Cinematographer magazine. The CSC is proud to name don as this year’s recipient of the President’s Award in gratitude for his talent, effort and dedication to the society.

REMARKS FROM THE AWARDS CHAIR
It started 54 years ago in 1957 as a backyard barbeque what the Annual CSC Awards may have lacked in elegance, was more than compensated for by its exuberance to honour the best of the best. while the hamburgers and hot-dogs are long gone, the exuberance has thrived throughout the years, making the CSC Annual Awards Gala the most anticipated event in the CSC’s calendar. As it was then, it is still all about cinematography. There were over 150 submissions to the 2011 CSC Awards. It is always a difficult and at times an overwhelming task to choose the nominees and winners. But we always manage to do it using a unique jury system that the CSC has developed through experience over the years. A minimum of five full CSC members are required to judge a category. There is no maximum, but usually there are 8 to 10 full csc’s on hand to be judges, with the most ever being 14 for a single category. Jurists are then asked to use a set criterion such as framing, lighting, composition etc., plus to dig deep and draw from their own experience and knowledge in judging the cinematic skills on the screen. Once all the films are screened in a category, the title of each film is read out, the submitting cinematographer’s name is never revealed, and jurists are polled as to whether that film is their first choice, second, third and so on. The films with lower rankings are then dropped from competition and the process begins again with the remaining films. This is an intense pro-cess that promotes much discussion about the cinematography, but ultimately the majority chooses the nominees and the winner. Sometimes the nominees and winner are evident, but mostly it’s a fight to the finish because of the high quality of the cinematography at this level. This system of judging is time consuming, taking a period of 5 days to evaluate all the submissions in each category. I would like to thank all the jurors who volunteer their time and expertise to the Awards. I would also like to thank deluxe for the use of their excellent facilities for our jury feature screenings and Technicolor for helping us out in a pinch. The CSC is the only awards event in Canada that screens its features category in 35mm. All the rest of the categories were screened at our clubhouse generously pro-vided by William F White’s head office in Toronto. I would like to thank Sony for the use of their excellent state of the art playback equipment and Image Media Farm for their technical expertise for our juries at the CSC clubhouse.

REMARKS FROM THE AWARDS CHAIR
I would like to thank all the CSC members who took time from their busy schedules and served as volunteers on the CSC Awards juries. Your effort is much appreciated. A special note of appreciation to Soho Post & Graphics for donating their edit-ing suite, david Oliver of Soho for producing our show reel, and to my co-chair, John Hodgson, for sitting in on the edit. A big thank you to our corporate sponsors for their unfailing and ongoing sup-port of the CSC Awards Gala. Please take a moment to look over our Gala Sponsor list to acknowledge their contributions. I would like to thank Guido Kondruss, the writer of this evening’s show script. I would also like to acknowledge with great gratitude our Executive director, Susan Saranchuk, as well as Karen Longland and all the volunteers for produc-ing tonight’s gala. And thank you to all the members of the CSC Executive who selflessly volunteer their valuable time to advise and participate in the success of tonight’s gala. I would also like to thank all the cinematographers who submitted their work to be judged in our competition. It was quite enjoyable seeing first hand so much talent in one place at one time. Finally, to all of you attending the 2011 CSC Awards Gala, thank you for helping to celebrate another year of excellence in Canadian cinematography.
