Welcome

Presents

The Tabard TheaTre company

From Cathy Spielberger Cassetta, Artistic Director

Of all the jobs in theatre, one that I especially enjoy is producing. I love to tell stories and give opportunities to others to help shape the telling of those stories.

Crowns is a story I followed since its birth at the McCarter Theatre in New Jersey in 2002 all the way until we produced it in 2009. Hats, especially vintage hats, are a passion of mine — and with Crowns there’s also the fabulous music… and those wonderful stories! That we are able to bring back the cast of our 2009 production to cap our 15th season with Crowns is an absolute delight for me. Regina Taylor has crafted a beautiful piece of theatre. The staff and cast of this production are outstanding and a blessing beyond measure. The result? You’re about to experience some serious “hattitude” and joy.

The designated non-profit for this production is the Ivy Rose Foundation of the San Jose Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., in support of their scholarship program for African-American young women.

I look forward to having you back with us in September when we kick off our 16th season with the rousing and touching Tony award-winning musical Memphis.

From Nick Nichols, Executive Director

This summer, Tabard will be entering a new stage — literally. In August, we will be replacing the stage here at Theatre on San Pedro Square. We have outlived the useful life of our current stage platform —with many

standout performances to show for it — and it is now time for a new, improved one. The new stage will have curved steps in front, improved lighting angles, and will really scale up the experience for both artists and audiences. We are being helped by a generous donation from CASE Design/Remodeling of San Jose but still need help in financing this exciting project. Please consider taking one of the donation cards you will find at the entrance to the theatre and making a tax-deductible gift to help Tabard get to “the next stage.”

CROWNS was originally produced by the McCarter Theatre Center, Princeton, New Jersey, and by Second Stage Theatre, New York City.

CROWNS was originally commissioned by the McCarter Theatre Center and was developed with the assistance of the Sundance Theatre Institute.

Produced by special arrangement with Dramatists Play Service, Inc.

Quotes from the book CROWNS: Portraits of Black Women in Church Hats

...hattitude... there’s a little more strut in your carriage

when you wear a nice hat. There’s something special about you.

My husband said... “You don’t need another hat. You don’t have but one head.”

I’ve had someone tell me, “Girl, I’ll throw you down for that hat.”

Listen, never touch my hat! ...Admire it from a distance, honey. If you get to shoutin’ hard and

that hat comes off, it’s mine!I’d lend my children before I’d lend my hats. I know my children know their way home, but my hats might not. ... any woman who prays or prophesies with her

head unveiled brings shame upon her head... - 1 Corinthians 11:5

Our crowns have been bought and paid for, all we have to do is wear them.

- James Baldwin

Time well spent. Tabard.Theatre for All Ages. Tabard.

Glenna Brambill-Williams (Mabel) has performed extensively in the Bay Area for over 40 years. She has appeared as a vocalist in several of Tabia African American Theatre Ensemble’s productions, as well as at San Jose Giants games. She has also donated her time and voice to many organizations in the community for their activities and events. Glenna is a member of San Jose Word of Faith Christian Center. She is reprising her role as “Mabel” in Tabard’s 2009 production of Crowns.

Jasmine O. Butler (Opal, Velma on April 16) has been singing since age two; she was the youngest member of Emmanuel Baptist Church children’s choir. She has studied under world-renowned conductors, composers, and musicians, and holds a B.A. in vocal performance from Hampton University. This is Jasmine’s first production with Tabard; she thanks the cast and crew for welcoming her with open arms. She also thanks God for gifting her with music, and her parents, siblings, boyfriend, and other family and friends for always supporting her dreams!

Debra J. Crenshaw (Jeannette, Choreographer) gives thanks to the Lord Jesus for her return as Jeanette from Tabard’s 2009 Crowns; Lady, Be Good; and Tin Pan Alley Rag. Founder/director of Dance For His Glory, Inc., she is a member of Destiny Christian Fellowship’s Dance Ministry and Worship Teams and works for Fremont’s Recreation Department. Her favorite role: Dorothy in The Wiz (SJSU; American College Theater Festival nominee). Other credits: AMTSJ’s Big River; work with Tabia Theatre Ensemble. She dedicates her performance to her mother, Georgia, who knows a thing or two about Grandma wearing her elaborate HATS!!

James Creer (The Man) returns after outstanding performances in Tabard shows including I Do, I Do!; Tuesdays with Morrie; The Duke, The Count, And Me; Looking Over the President’s Shoulder; Driving Miss Daisy; and Crowns. He also vocal-directed Tabard’s award-winning production of Violet. James also starred in Mack & Mabel, Ain’t Misbehavin’, Ragtime, and Finian’s Rainbow for South Bay Musical Theatre and many productions with Campbell United Methodist Church. He received his musical education at Sam Houston State University.

Juanita Harris (Mother Shaw, Director) has been acting and singing professionally for over 20 years. Crowns 2016 is her directorial debut at Tabard. Audiences will recognize her from several shows on Tabard’s stage, and she has recently been traveling internationally and sharing her voice with audiences in Paris, Germany, Austria, and Italy. Past Tabard productions include Crowns 2009, Stompin’ at the Savoy, Violet, soloist with Nineteen, and several self-produced solo concerts.

Tracy Perrilliat (Velma) was born and raised in Oakland and is pastor of worship at South Bay Community Church in Fremont. This is her fifth Tabard show, following Stompin’ at the Savoy, Tin Pan Alley Rag, Bandstand Beat, and Crowns 2009. Tracy’s greatest joy is her children. A singer/songwriter, Tracy sang her first solo in Kindergarten and has been at it ever since; she recorded a CD for which she wrote all 15 songs. Tracy loves God; He is the foundation of her life. Faith, family, friend, fitness, fun...

Jenafer Thompson (Yolanda) is eternally honored to have her first leading role with Tabard. The Vallejo native is a director of children’s theatre with the Greater Vallejo Recreation District, as well as with Tabard. She holds a B.A. in theatre performance from San Jose State University and has portrayed numerous roles in productions of Into the Woods, Marat/Sade, and Zoot Suit by Luis Valdez. She dedicates her performance to her family and the loving memory of her aunt, Mother Ardella Ennis. Thomas Times (The Man on April 21 and 28) is making his debut with Tabard Theatre and is excited and honored to be a part of this production. Mr. Times is a recent graduate of LIU Post University with a B.F.A. in acting. Mr. Times would like to thank God, for always being the guiding force in his life; his mom and family for always supporting him; and his friends for keeping him level-headed and down to earth, and always providing him with a much-needed laugh.

Paula Warren (Wanda) is happy to return to Tabard Theatre after performing in the world-premiere original musical Love, Laughter and Linguine, as well as appearing as John Hancock in Tabard’s all-female version of 1776, and as Wanda in Tabard’s original production of the hit musical Crowns in 2009. She has also performed with South Bay Musical Theatre in Saratoga, where she was a cast member of Ragtime; Ain’t Misbehavin’; Hello, Dolly!; Hairspray; and Finian’s Rainbow.

Cathy Spielberger Cassetta (Producer) is a theatre/television veteran and entrepreneur who created/produced/co-hosted the weekly TV program Theater This Week in the 1990s before founding Tabard in 2001. She has created and/or written and directed a handful of productions for Tabard, including the most recent Homeward Bound: An Orphan Train Journey. In her non-theatre time, Cathy has completed her yoga teacher training with Almaden Yoga and is now a certified yoga instructor.

Samuel Cisneros (Music Director, Keyboard) is a highly respected pianist and music director who has worked with most of the theatre companies in the South Bay as well as accompanying STOCtet. He returns to Tabard after serving as music director for the award-winning Violet, as well as I Do! Next season he will music-direct The Musical of Musicals (The Musical!).

He is also a former record producer, recording studio owner, and keyboardist in numerous rock bands and in theatre orchestras. While at M.I.T. he studied acoustics with Professor Bose, and he holds a M.Eng. from U.C. Berkeley and an M.B.A. from Stanford. By day, he is Tabard’s operations director.

Melissa Sanchez (Costume Designer) received her B.A. in technical theater/costume design from San Francisco State. Productions there included Chess, A Streetcar Named Desire, Barber of Seville, Spring Awakening, and Tartuffe. Other work includes References to Salvador Dali Make Me Hot, Wallflower, and La Llorona. She recently costumed West Side Story and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde for City Lights. She joins Tabard this season as resident assistant costumer; she costumed Swift Justice and Miracle on 34th Street and assisted with costumes for Death Takes a Holiday and I Do, I Do!.

Rover Spotts (Lighting Designer) returns after lighting several Tabard shows including I Do, I Do!; Homeward Bound; The Best Christmas Pageant Ever; 10 in 10: Perspective; and Starting Here, Starting Now. During the day he works in the IT and Performing Arts departments for a private K-12 school. He also works for the City of Sunnyvale’s theater and has designed shows for Sunnyvale Community Players, Lyric Theatre, 42nd Street Moon, Theatre Rhinoceros, and various other Bay Area theater companies.

Joyce Taylor (Stage Manager) stage-managed Tabard’s recent Swift Justice and Miracle on 34th Street and appeared in both Homeward Bound and The Best Christmas Pageant Ever. Joyce has been part of Cathedral of Faith’s World of Arts ministry for 20 years, where she has performed in a variety of roles from narrator to demon. For the last 10 years, she has been the Drama Ministry Director where she directs and manages Christmas and Easter productions, dramas, and scripture readings.
