Dear members, On behalf of the Executive Council and on my personal behalf, I extend to you all a very warm welcome to this Annual General Meeting. I have the pleasure in presenting this Annual Report of Presidency Alumni Association, Calcutta, for the year 2013-2014. Membership

The overall membership strength of the association stands at 4079. The year wise membership profile of last five years is in Table 1.

Financial position

The Association has transferred Rs. 2 lakhs in this year to the Reserve Fund raising the total Reserve Fund to Rs. 24.60 lakhs. Total endowment amount in bank is Rs. 7.01 lakhs for prizes and oration.

Activities of the Association

1. ENDOWMENTS

The following endowments have been continued. Sm. Dalia Datta has donated Rs. 1 lakh in memory of her father Satyabrata Ghosh, from which two prizes will be given to students who score the maximum marks in Physics (Part II) and Physics (Part III) examination, respectively. Shri Gopendra Nath Roy has donated Rs. 30,000 in memory of his father Balai Charan Roy, from which one prize will go to the student who scores the maximum marks in M.Sc. Physics. Dr. Sisir Kumar Mazumder has created an endowment of Rs.1 lakh for oration on Science and Humanities. Smt Swapna Roy had created an endowment of Rs.1 lakh in the year 2014 in memory of her husband Late (Dr.) Sumit Roy, alumnus, from which one prize will go to the topper in B.Sc in biological science. Shri Prasanta Pal, alumnus, had created an endowment of Rs. 15,000/- in memory of his father-in-law Panchanan Pal from which one prize will go to the highest marks holder in the first & second semester combined in B.Sc in Mathematics.

2. AUTUMN ANNUAL

On the occasion of the Founders’ Day celebration, the 42nd volume of the Autumn Annual, under the Chief-Editorship of Sm Nabaneeta DevSen and the Editorship of Shri Shyama Prasad Mukherjee, was released on 20 January, 2014. The Association expresses its gratitude to all those who have acquired advertisements towards generous financial support for the publication and other activities of the association.

3. ACADEMIC SEMINAR

A seminar lecture was organized in association with the Physics department where Prof. Bikas Chandra Sinha delivered a lecture to the present students on 14 August, 2013 at PLT-1. The programme was supported by Dr. Sisir Kumar Mazumder endowment fund. To commemorate the bi-centenary birth anniversary of Rev Krishnamohan Bandipadhyay, alumnus, a programme was orgainsed jointly with the Sociology and Bengali Departments on 1 October, 2013 at AJC Bose Auditorium of the University where a panel discussion on the subject- ‘Is Derozio still relevant in Presidency?’ was held where Prof Amal Mukhopadhyay, Prof Rajat Kanta Roy, Shri Chittabrata, Shri Sandipan Mitra and Smt. Anamitraa Chakrabarty spoke on the subject. A skit based on the

novel- ‘Persecuted’, written by Rev. Bandopadhyay, was staged by the present students of the above departments. Shri Saktipada Bhattacharyya introduced the novel to the audience. A seminar was organised on 28 February, 2014 in collaboration with the Philosophy department in memory of Late (Prof) Probas Jiban Chowdhury, alumnus and former teacher of the department, on the subject-‘ Science, arts and philosophy’, under the support of Smt Ritabari Roy Moulik, alumnus and daughter of Prof. Chowdhury. Dr. Amalendu Chakrabarty, former head of the Philosophy department, delivered the lecture.

4. PRESIDENCY DEBATE

Smt Nandita Dasgupta, has created an endowment of Rs. 3 Lakhs in the name of her husband Late Sudhansghu Dasgupta, alumnus and great debater of his time, for inter-college/university annual debate. The debate, to be popularly known as Presidency Debate, will be organized by the alumni association where the team Presidency will comprise both alumni and present students. One debate will be organized between team Presidency and any other peer level institution every year.

5. ALUMNI TRUST FUND

Presidency Alumni Trust has been created for supporting various development of the university and providing scholarships to the university toppers in arts and science in undergraduate courses. The trustees have reported that so far Rs. 4,37,186 has been collected from the donations and interests. All alumni are requested to donate to the trust generously.

6. WEBSITE RECONSTRUCTION

Shri Sandip Kar and Shri Anindya Dutta, both alumni, have taken initiative to reconstruct the website. We thank all alumni who have donated for this purpose

7. ACG Distinguished Alumnus Award

Atul Chandra Gupta (ACG) Distinguished Alumnus Award Endowment fund has been created with the donations of Shri Parthasarathi Sengupta, Shri Saktinath Mukherji, Shri Animesh Sen, Shri Subir Dutta and Shri M K Chaudhury in the honour of Atul Chandra Gupta, the first President of the Alumni Association, with a view to felicitating a distinguished alumnus every year. The Award 2011 was conferred to Shri Somnath Chatterjee [alumnus, 1945-1949], a distinguished parliamentarian, lawyer and former Speaker of Loksabha in the year 2012. Though association had decided to confer next two awards to Shri Amartya Sen and Shri Tapan Roy Chowdhury, the function could be organized due to some operational inconveniences

8. BIJOYA SAMMILANI

Bijoya Sammilani was organized on 24 November, 2013 at Derozio Hall. Shri Amita Dutta, alumnus, and her troop presented the dance performance - ‘Durga’. The programme was followed by dinner.

9. SANTINIKETAN PROGRAMME

The cultural function in Santiniketan was organised on 13-14 December, 2013. Shri Anindya Mitra, Shri Jayanta Mitra and Smt Rupa Bandopadhyay hosted various cultural programmes at their respective houses. Smt Bratati Bandopadhyay performed on 13 December evening at Jayanta Mitra’s house at Purvapalli, Shri Manoj Murali Aiyer and Shri Uttam Das baul performed on 14 December evening at Anindya Mitra’s house at Ratanpalli and Santhali dance was organised at Rupa Bandopadhyay’s house at Deer Park on 14 December afternoon. The hospitality extended by all the above alumni at their respective house was outstanding in standard and ambience.

10. PAST VS PRESENT CRICKET MATCH

The Annual Cricket Match between the past and present students was held at the College ground on 18 January, 2013. The past students won the match. Shri Bivas Chaudhuri, Secretary, Alumni association gave away the trophies.

11. FOUNDERS’ DAY CELEBRATION AND RE-UNION TEA

The Founders’ Day of the university and Reunion for the year 2014 were celebrated on 20 January 2014. The Alumni Association organized a Reunion Tea on the university lawn. Around 1800 persons comprising students, teachers, non-teaching staff and alumni joined the programme.

12. ANNUAL CULTURAL PROGRAMME

The annual cultural programme was held on 12 July, 2014 at Sisir Mancha. Bengali play- Dampati written by Manoj Mitra was staged under the direction of Shri Biatnbindu Bandopadhyay. The association expresses its gratitude to the noted thespian and alumnus Shri Bibhas Chakrabarty for booking Sisir Mancha.

13. REMEMBRANCE

The Executive Council on behalf of all the members of PCAA deeply mourns the sad demise of our alumni namely, Jibanlal Deb, Mihir Mukherjee, Barun De, Jyotirmoy Mitra, Susantakrishna Deb, Kamala Ghosh, Dipankar Lahiri, Sunit Kumar Roy, Sukanti Hazra, whom we have lost forever during the year. Their memory will ever be cherished with love and admiration. [The list of

deceased is based on the information received by the alumni office and may not be complete].

14. ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

The overall performance of the association during the year 2013-2014 was highly satisfactory and with higher achievements. I take this opportunity to express my grateful thanks and appreciation for the unstinted support and cooperation extended by the Executive Council and above all, the members of the association and other well-wishers. I also thank our bankers and auditors for their support. I express my gratitude to the administration of the Presidency University for the support and cooperation. I would also like to express my appreciation of the university staff for their constant cooperation. Shri Dilip Roy is always a source of inspiration for running this alumni association and I pay my deep regard for his services notwithstanding his failing health. I also thank Shri Tapas Roy, Office Assistant, for his sincere work.

Treasurer’s Report It gives me immense pleasure to present the Audited Annual Accounts of the Association for the year ending 31 March 2014. Members may kindly observe that the quality and the procedure adopted for maintenance of accounts are in uniformity with the requirements of the West Bengal Societies Registration Act, 1961. Lastly, I take this opportunity to express my grateful thanks to the Executive Council and Finance Sub-Committee of PCAA for the cooperation extended during the year. Auditor’s Report We have checked the Receipts & Payments Account and Income & Expenditure Account and Balance Sheet and certify that they exhibited true and correct receipts and payments, income and expenditure for the year ended 31 March 2014, and state of affairs of the association as on 31 March 2014, so far information and explanations, given books and records and vouchers presented for our verification. Observation: Accounts were maintained on cash basis.
