MEETING MEMORIES A Glance Inside the Local Wine Industry By Dr. Don

A year ago next month, on February 1, our weekly meeting was especially enjoyable because member Steve Walker updated us on the wine industry with a presentation called “Winemaking 101 (or How I spent the summer of 2016).” Steve is a retired fire fighter. In the spirit of “retiring to something,” he pursued his love for the wine indus-try by working as an intern with Three Steves’ Winery.

Everyone enjoyed the presentation. The Bible says that God blessed us with wine “to gladden the heart of man.” However, even members who don’t drink wine appreciate the beauty of vineyards stretching across hillsides plus the lovely and sometimes palatial buildings associated with the larger wineries.

Steve explained the complicated process of planting, growing, harvesting, and processing grapes that underlies every bottle of wine. He also revealed the complexity of the industry beginning with choosing appropriate land, preparing the soil to receive young plants, plus designing and installing miles of irrigation and then the trellis system to support the vines. He described the challenge of choosing particular varietals and plants that will be most fruitful considering characteristics of location, market forces, resistance to local pests, and be most suited to the characteristics of soils, moisture, and salinity levels.

Steve told us some surprising facts. For example, some vineyards are protected by propane-powered cannons that fire blank loads every 60 seconds in order to discourage birds from feasting on the growing plants.

Rotary is committed to carrying out service projects associated with local communities and with projects around the world. But Rotarians also have fun together. For example, it was a real pleasure last year to learn some-thing interesting about Steve’s life and hear his first-hand account of the fascinating local wine industry.
