April 2019
Randall Middle School
Dear Randall Families,
We are in the home stretch of the school year, and there are many important happenings from upcoming FSA tests,
PTA Awards, new committee/board nominations, incoming 5th Graders, and updates on our school cross walk situation.
Though it is the last 9 weeks, it is certainly not slowing down!
First and foremost, our PTSA has donated money to our school so that they can hire a private crossing guard for the
Fishhawk Crossing/Fishhawk Blvd intersection. The PTSA decided this was a high priority once we learned other schools
were able to do this. I attended a county commissioner meeting this morning, April 3rd, where they voted on a 3-year
plan to phase in crossing guards at all middle schools in the county. I am happy to report that the measure passed
unanimously, and we will look forward to the crossing guard implementation! Randall Administration and our PTSA
want you to know that your children’s safety is a top priority for us. We will be using your existing PTSA funds that are
normally set aside for campus beautification to fund the crossing guard through the end of this school year.
Please be sure to look for the emails from our Principal, Mrs. Mawhinney, to be aware of our FSA testing schedule. It is
so important to keep up to date on this and help our kids as best we can with extra study sessions and healthy
breakfasts!
We will be hosting the incoming 6th graders (now 5th graders) for an ice cream social on April 11th from 5-6:30 to
help familiarize them with our school. Welcome to our new Hawks!
Our PTSA is sponsoring an educational vaping program for anyone, parents and kids alike, who would like to attend. It
will be held at Newsome auditorium on April 24th at 6:30pm in the Media Center. Parents, please help us arm our
children with the information they need to keep themselves safe, healthy, and away from these new dangers.
We have begun our hunt for new PTSA board and committee nominations! We have many amazing PTSA members
who have generously given of their time, and we are happy to see so many of them volunteer for the next school year.
However, there are many open slots for the 2019/20 school year that will need to be filled. Please consider volunteering
to aid our school and our children next year; you have no idea what a difference you will make in your child’s life and in
our community! If you are interested in nominating yourself or others, please contact Megan Bourgeois at
[email protected] to find out how you can be a part of our amazing team next year!
Last, but not least, we are so happy to be able to celebrate our PTSA award nominees for the Hillsborough County PTA
Awards at the April 11th Volunteer Gala. See page 2 for more details of our nominees. We are so proud of them all!

PTSA District Awards
Ty Walck
T he Hillsborough County Council PTA/PTSA hosts an awards ceremony each year to honor our local PTA/PTSA
units for their hard work. Randall PTSA has chosen our nominees for the many awards that will be given at
this ceremony to highlight those who have gone above and beyond in our school and our PTSA. Though every
single one of our nominees is a winner in our school and in our heart, we hope that we may see them bring home
the district award on April 11th at the gala! We know our nominees have truly fulfilled the purposes of the PTA:
• To promote the welfare of children and youth in home, school, community and place of worship
• To raise the standards of home life
• To secure adequate laws for the care and protection of children and youth
• To bring into closer relation the home & school, that parents and teacher may cooperate intelligently in the
education of children and youth.
Awards:
• Principal of the Year: Claire Mawhinney, Randall Principal
• Superman (Male Engagement): Michael Oliver, 6th Grade Vice Principal
• Instructional Person of the Year: Cynthia Hardy, Media Specialist
• Non-Instructional Person of the Year: Tammie Ferger, Principal’s Secretary
• PTA President of the Year: Terri Fischer
• Student of the Year: Maren Ping, 8th Grade
• Volunteer of the Year: Megan Bourgeois
In addition to all our members that are nominated for awards, we have put forth our Memorial Day Tribute for the
Family Involvement Award. We are proud of our students, parents, and civics teachers who worked to make sure
our 9/11 victims are never forgotten. We also nominated our PTSA Photo Contest for the Arts in Education award.
Thank you to Terri Fischer who makes sure all our budding young photographers have the outlet they deserve in
our community.
We are so proud of our Randall volunteers, because we were able to enter our PTSA for an award for volunteer
hours. We needed to reach two times our membership numbers for volunteer hours, and we made it! Our mem-
bers have volunteered over 3144 hours this year so far, and our numbers are still climbing. Thank you SO MUCH to
the 1123 members of our PTSA who give tirelessly of themselves for our children. You have no idea how much you
are appreciated!

PTSA Information
PTSA Sponsors Author
Visit from Brian Wells
O n March 27th, Mrs. Hardy and the PTSA sponsored an author visit from
Brian Wells. Mr. Wells spoke to every 6th grader during their Language
Arts class. He discussed not only his book, “The League and the Lantern,” but
he talked to the students about the importance of making life their own story.
“Every successful person I have met has one thing in common. They all failed.
And, they all learned from their failures and tried again.” He reminded them
that everyone makes mistakes and takes those moments as an opportunity to
learn from them and become a better person. Mr. Wells has worked on tv spe-
cials for NBC, ABC, CBS, and The Hallmark Channel. He also worked as an exec-
utive director on 15 movies for tv including Return to Nim’s Island, and Dear
Dumb Diary. A huge thank you to Mrs. Hardy for arranging this event. We are
so lucky to have her at our school! And, a huge thank you for supporting the
PTSA so we can sponsor these programs for our students.

Melissa Miller 6th Grade Counselor
H ere is the important information for you to be aware of in April:
1. Please be sure you’re regularly checking both the student’s Edsby account as well as the parent’s account because there
is different information on each of them. Keep in touch with teachers via email in order to ensure your children are doing well.
More information can be found at mySPOT at myspot.sdhc.k12.fl.us
2. Students have three opportunities each semester to pass their classes. They need to earn at least two points (three for high
school credit classes) each semester for each core class which includes 1st quarter, 2nd quarter and the semester exam. An A is
worth 4 points, a B is 3 points, a C is 2 points, a D is 1 point and an F is 0 points. Of course, it’s best to earn at least A’s and B’s
in high school credit classes in order to keep that GPA up.
3. Randall’s Kindness Club “Start With Hello” has meetings on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays in Room 501 (Ms. Kirby’s room) from
8:30 to 9:15. If you have a Kindness Club t-shirt, be sure to wear it on these club days. Applications can be gotten from Ms.
Kirby, 6th grade History and Reading teacher, in room 501. There is a $20 fee which includes a t-shirt although there’s only a
limited number left, and those payments should be given to Ms. Kirby in room 501 or Ms. Miller, 6th grade Counselor, in the
guidance office. Students can also sign up on Edsby to be a part of this group and get important information. Look for activi-
ties and information on our bulletin board outside of the art room near the media center! The club members have adopted
Booker T Washington Elementary School and have organized a drive to collect new socks and new toiletries and books. Dona-
tions can be brought to room 501. : )
4. We have been giving out treats during lunches on Fridays for students who have been given a “Kindness Kudo” by their teach-
ers. 3 names are drawn from each lunch.
5. There will be no school on Monday 4/8 and Friday 4/19…enjoy your time off!
6. There will be an incoming 6th graders’ Ice Cream Social and Open House on Thursday 4/11 from 5:00 to 6:30 pm in the cafete-
ria and gym and 6th grade classrooms.
7. The 6th grade FSA Writing test will be on Tuesday 4/2 and the make-up day will be Wednesday 4/3. Please be here on time
well-rested and with a full belly. The 7th grade FSA Writing test will be on Wednesday 4/3, and the 8th grade test will be on
Thursday 4/4.
8. Report cards for 3rd quarter will be available online on Wednesday 4/10.
9. Nature’s Classroom fieldtrip will be on Monday 4/15 through Wednesday 4/17 for all 6th graders so be sure you’ve turned in
your permission forms and $10 to your homeroom teacher.
10. The beautiful NJHS induction ceremony will be on Monday 4/15 at 6:00 pm in the gym.
11. Conference Night will be on Thursday 4/25 from 5 to 7 pm so be sure to come if you’re worried about your child’s grades.
12. You can keep up on the happenings at Randall through parent links that are sent out at least weekly by Ms. Mawhinney, the
principal, but you need to have a current email address in our computer system. You can also get lots of information through
this newsletter and through Edsby and through our school’s website at randall.mysdhc.org and on our electronic marquee in
the front of the school.
13. Ms. Miller is the 6th grade counselor and can be reached at [email protected] or at 740-3900 x255. Ms. Roberts is the 7th grade
counselor and can be reached at [email protected] or at 740-3900 x233. Ms. Richards is the 8th grade counselor and can be
reached at [email protected] or at 740-3900 x231. Email is probably the easiest way to reach the counselors since they are in
and out of their offices frequently. In the guidance office we also have Ms. Hutchings, the Literacy Coach, and she can be reached at na-
[email protected] or at 740-3900 x234. Our Military Family Life Counselor is Ms. Alsing, and she’s at Randall Mondays, Tuesdays
and Fridays. She can be reached at [email protected] or at 740-3900 x235. Our psychologist is Ms. Porto, and she’s at
Randall on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays. She can be reached at [email protected] or at 740-3900 x236. Our social worker
is Ms. Jahnke, and she’s at Randall on Mondays and Wednesdays. She can be reached at [email protected] or at 740-3900 x236.
Our bilingual paraprofessional is Ms. Rodriguez, and she’s at Randall on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesday mornings. She can be reached
at [email protected] or at 740-3900 x244.
