Did you make a New Year’s resolution or go big and identify three goals you seek to achieve for 2016? Is one of your goals aligned with the strategic initiatives of ASCE? I challenge you to think about integrating one if not. With the goal of promoting our profession and raising awareness of our state’s infrastructure report card, it is with great pleasure that I would like to announce the Arizona Section has been successfully awarded for the 2016 State Public Affairs Grants (SPAG) based upon our recent application for additional funding of Legislative Outreach. The Section has been awarded funds in the amount of $3,700 with an additional incentive of $500 for State Government Relations Lobbying! Congratulations to Fausto Jimenez and Mark Lamer for the successful efforts of our 2016 SPAG Application! Have you renewed your annual ASCE membership? If you haven’t … please do! Please ensure you select the both the National Membership Dues and the Arizona Section-Phoenix Branch Dues. Your contribution to the Arizona Section continues to provide support for students, our

subsidiary organizations, and local activities.

Welcome back and Happy New Year! I hope your return from the holidays finds you both well rested and excited for the opportunities ahead. The ASCE Southern Arizona Branch and Younger Member Forum are proud to announce that we will be hosting a:

Women in Civil Engineering Panel in the Spring of 2016.  This panel will consist of female engineers who will answer a multitude

of different questions aimed at helping women in civil engineering better navigate their careers. Being that we are still very early in the

planning process, we decided that this would be the perfect time to ask for your input.

ASCE Southern Arizona Branch YMFJanuary's YMF Social will be on Thursday, January 7th at 6 PM at Fox & Hound. We will be in the Burgundy Room to watch the Wildcats take on the Bruins! Ask for YMF!

Appetizers and non-alcoholic beverages will be provided.

Rob Lyons, PE, CFMHere is a brief update on what the Phoenix Branch is providing to our members and some upcoming events you won’t want to miss.

LAST MONTH…. December Holiday Party

The Phoenix Branch held the annual holiday party at Aunt Chilada’s on December 9, 2015. Over 70 members and friends attended. The membership enjoyed great food and drink and participated in a graphic contest. The ASU ASCE Student Chapter’s entry took first place with their 2015 T-shirt design graphic.

November Luncheon The Phoenix Branch participated in a joint luncheon with APWA AZ on November 18, 2015. The presentation was hosted by APWA AZ at the Phoenix Country club with a great presentation by Mark Melnychenko, Special Projects Administrator of the City of Phoenix Transportation Department. Mr. Melnychenko explained the City’s Complete Streets program. It was an informative discussion keeping the membership up to date on innovative projects being undertaken by the City. Thank you APWA AZ for another excellent cross-networking event!

January 13, 2015 – Come enjoy lunch with colleagues and hear Airport Future Project news and CIP updates from Jim Petty the Pinal County Airport Economic Development Director, Bob Draper the Phoenix Mesa Gateway Airport Engineering Manager, and Kyle Cotchy the Phoenix Aviation Deputy Director for Design and Construction Services. February 10, 2015 – Jay Yenerich of Valley METRO will be presenting “Program Update and Technologies at METRO”. This will be joint luncheon with the AZ ASCE Transportation Committee. ASCE Phoenix Branch Luncheons take place the second Wednesday of the month, Jan to June and Aug to Oct. at 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The luncheons are held at Dave & Busters, Tempe Marketplace, 2000 E. Rio Salado Parkway, Tempe, AZ 85281.

to prepare for a legislative drive-in on January 26, 2016 to share our report card with elected officials and raise additional awareness of our state’s needs for short term and long term infrastructure funding. If you are interested in participating in this event, please Contact Mike Worlton at [email protected]. A very big thank you goes out to Marlo Abramowitz, Frederick Tack, and Dennis Richards for stepping forward to help with this initiative!

The ASCE Phoenix Branch hosted their annual holiday party. The event was an exceptional success with the joint efforts of ASCE/ACEC/ASHE/EWRI coming together on December 9th at Aunt Chilada's in Phoenix to celebrate the success of 2015, network with our peers, and enjoy a holiday party graphic contest. Special thanks go out to Rob Lyons for taking the lead on organizing this wonderful event.

Our next Section meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, January 12th at Terracon in Tempe. The meeting begins at 5pm, please feel free to join us. RSVP with Mark Fountain at [email protected] by Monday, January 11th. Don’t forget those subsidiary reports are due in advance!

Save the date!! The 2016 Annual Statewide ASCE/ASHE Fall Conference is scheduled for Friday, September 9th at the Desert Willows Conference Center. Stay tuned for more information, the committee has some exciting changes in the works for this year’s event! If you haven’t done so yet, take a moment now to mark your calendars and reserve the date for this wonderful event.

ASCE SAB YMF PE Review Course

ASCE Southern Arizona Branch YMFASCE SAB YMF will be holding its annual PE Exam Review Course for the April and October 2016 exams in early spring! The review course will begin in early March and possibly into April.  Topics will cover Construction, Hydraulics, Hydrology, Materials, Foundations, Structures, Transportation, and Water Supply/ Treatment. 

As part of planning for the review, YMF is requesting those interested in participating in the review to respond to this email by January 8, 2016. A registration form and schedule will be available early 2016.
