Summertime in Wisconsin!

Barbeque grills, cold beverages, neighbors, friends and family vacations. I hope

you’re all taking some time to slow down, unwind and enjoy life.

I’d like to review our recent Festa Italia celebration and recognize a number of individuals who played significant roles in the planning and execution of Festa.

Festa Italia (May 29 – 31)Although weather was not our friend (especially during the day on Saturday) this year, we still welcomed over 3,000 guests to McKee Farms Park to enjoy great food, incredible entertainment and a sampling of Italian cultural history. We measure the success of Festa by answering two questions.

Did our members and guests enjoy themselves?

Yes. With the addition of Benvenuto’s, our food offerings were better, our musical acts provided something for every ear

(608) 238-8406 (if no answer - 233-9654) We treat every family as our own . . .

Matthew Court, the 11-year old boy who was hit and

killed by a car while bicycling on University Ave. on July 13, is the son of Kristin Phillips-Court, a professor in UW’s Department of Art History Italian, specializing in Italian Renaissance literature and culture, and Ricardo Court, a historian of Italy and faculty associate in Political Science, also at UW-Madison. The family spent time in Italy, working and playing; friends told him that he had a beautiful accent. He was working through DuoLingo in preparation for next year’s trip. He loved the family friends’ farm in Italy, visual art, and the Mediterranean Sea. Matthew heroically pushed the “two gelati per day rule.” He ordered politely, saying vorrei rather than voglio (I would like rather than I want). Matthew loved Italy, soccer, swimming, his friends, and music, and wanted to be a musician. Madison’s Italian community grieves for the family.

Mary Grignano Jorstad, age 99, of Middleton, died on May 30th. She was born on Sept. 7, 1915, in Madison, the daughter of Leonardo and Antonina Grignano. She grew up in the Greenbush neighborhood. She was a graduate of Madison Central High School. While working at Melster Candy Co., she met the love of her life, Arne Jorstad. They were married on May 7, 1941, and spent 56 wonderful years together.

By Catherine Tripalin Murray

Mike

Cammilleri is described as being a proud young member who exudes

an incredible amount of energy, and that includes some pretty remarkable ideas along with being a busy and talented musician in a local band (or two or three). It’s no wonder as a member of Festa’s entertainment committee these past two years that all the pieces fit so well together to produce a weekend of performances we’d like to witness and enjoy again. Mike also serves as an IWC Council member as well as being a really nice guy.

Having the great pleasure of shedding a little light on the ingredients of what makes the IWC one of the oldest continuously active clubs of its kind in the country has everything to do with members like Mike, whose father’s side is 100% Sicilian. Mike’s grandfather, John, (and Mary) Cammilleri is from Aragona, Sicily, and immigrated with his family in the 1930s. Grandpa became a butcher who owned Cammilleri Grocery in Beloit that proudly sold his homemade Italian sausage. Mike’s father, also named John, still resides in Beloit with Mike’s Polish mother.

Mike grew up in Beloit, graduating from Beloit Turner High School in 1999. He attended

Amichevole Novita (friendly news)UW-Madison and received a B.A. in Economics and Political Science in 2003. Mike works for the Department of Statistics at UW-Madison as their systems administrator, working with high throughput computing projects and other projects he describes in comical fashion.

His sponsor in 2012 when joining the IWC was Jack LeTourneau, a friend Mike met through the local music recording industry. Jack recorded Mike’s band, The Kissers (Irish rock) at the High Noon Saloon for a live double album in 2008. Since then, Jack has recorded other albums for various other groups Mike plays with around the Madison area. If you wondering what Mike’s expertise is in the music world that surrounds us in our beloved

Mad City, it has everything to do with keys, as in the accordion, piano, and organ. And there’s more. He performs with The

Kissers (accordions), the Mike Cammilleri Organ Trio (jazz), and occasionally with Wifee and The Huzz Band (they’ll be at Jazz at Five this year) and The Hometown Sweethearts.

Mike’s true hometown sweetheart is his wonderful wife of seven years, Andrea, who also works for the UW- WIDA Consortium and Education Research. Sometime in November they will become proud parents of their first child.

And with more great pleasure, to you, Mike, Salute!

Wifee and Huzz Band kicked off a rousing Saturday night!

FinanceLed by John Benjamin with the assistance of Tom Pisapia and Jack Parino, our entertainers were paid on site and the cash flow process was smooth.

SponsorshipSteve Tortorici and Jim DiUlio secured a record level of sponsorship dollars by levering relationships and new ideas.

UpdatesHonor The PastLater this summer we’ll be making sausage at the clubhouse and of course in the early fall we’ll begin the process of making wine. What better way to honor our fathers and grandfathers than by participating in these activities. Take some time to join us.

Celebrate The PresentSign up for our Golf Outing on August 23 at Sun Prairie Golf Club.

Come to our club picnic on August 30 at McKee Farms Park.

Envision The FutureWe continue to make progress in our effort to establish an Italian Center on the UW – Madison campus. We’re working with faculty from the French & Italian department and officials from the Consul General’s office in Chicago.

President’s Mail BoxSend me an e-mail ([email protected]) or drop a note in the box I’ve provided in our club’s office. If there’s something you like or don’t like about our club, I really want to hear from you. I can’t promise that we’ll address every need, or implement every idea, but I can promise you the courtesy of a response.

Fino alla prossima volta, essere bene e che Dio benedica.

IAWC sold a lot of cookies, including the sought-after cucidati made by Linda Belz, Jean Musillami’s famous sesame seed cookies, and Katie LeTourneau’s perfect biscotti. No matter how many cucidati we make, they sell out, usually by Saturday night. Many thanks to Mary Katic for her significant contribution, and deep thanks to Vito Cerniglia for letting us use the refrigerated truck overnight. Charmaine Pelliterri staffs the booth. This winter some of us who don’t know how to make cucidati will practice and learn so we can step up production for next year. Also, thanks to IWC for the nice new sign!

IWC Annual Award Nominations!

Nominations for the annual awards for the Columbian of the Year, Community Service, Outstanding Service and Athlete of the Year are due by Friday, August 28th. See the enclosed forms for details.

Alfonso Ponticelli headlined Sunday's entertainment.

Festa RoyaltyFor the first time, we had not only a Festa Queen, but also two Little Miss Festas! Kaia Troia (5), Annemarie Newman, and Sophia Bettinger (9, named after Sophia Loren) dressed their parts perfectly and looked absolutely lovely. They mingled with the crowd, and people lined up to have their photos taken with these lovelies. Kaia is the granddaughter of Mary Troia, Annemarie is a member of IAWC, and Sophia is the granddaughter of Phyllis Masino and Jan Barbone.

Cucidati, Biscotti, Cookies as Popular as Ever!
