President’s Message

Fall has brought us cooler weather and shorter days. My sewing room beckons and I have resolved to get

in there and work on more of my “intentions”. I recently completed a quilt top that I began three years ago

and cut the backing. It is ready to be quilted and hangs on the design wall and begs to be finished! Calling

me from another corner of the room is a pair of partial quilts for my granddaughter’s new bedroom. Those

quilts will soon be victims of my sewing machine! What intentions will you be getting to?

Our CQA board was complete for one month! Thank you Laura Divine for filling the Director of

Speaker Hospitality.

Our secretary, Saralee Antrim-Saizan, has resigned her position on our Officer’s board. Our members and

officers say a big thank you to Saralee for the service she has given our guild.

CQA needs to fill the secretary position immediately. Perhaps you are a newer member of our guild and

you would like to become acquainted with more of our members. Or as a more experienced member you

want to serve your guild in a deeper, fulfilling way. Having a hand in the leadership of CQA is very

rewarding.

Our secretary attends the monthly board meetings and records our action through the meeting minutes.

The secretary also takes minutes at the general meetings. The minutes are posted to our website for the

membership to read.

Please step up and offer your service to the guild as our secretary! The guild has excellent guidelines to

assist you with your board position. Please call Thelma Atkinson to discuss the position.

How are you doing with the President’s Challenge, EACH ONE TEACH ONE? It was fun to see the

photos of Shirley Bertalino’s grandson as he worked on a surprise quilt for his mother. What will you do to

meet the challenge? Document your students with photos and post them on the challenge bulletin board

along with the story of your students’ endeavors. Bring the completed projects for show and tell.

I come away from our guild meetings energized by all the ways our members contribute to and take away

from each gathering. There is so much excitement in the room as we arrive for our meetings! Thank you, the

members, for your individual and collective efforts which create a great spirit at our meetings.

Update: MEETING LOCATION SEARCH

We have contacted every church in our community that may have an appropriate space for our general

meetings to no avail. We are still looking for a location. The Parks and Rec community center is not

available for all of our meeting dates. The Ventura County Schools has a lovely facility, however it is only

available for three of our 2017 dates. The Relocation Committee has not given up and will continue to

search.

Perhaps you have some cost effective solutions that meet our criteria? Please text or email or call your

board members with your ideas.

Comfort Givers

We encourage you to visit the Comfort Givers table and checkout the finished quilts brought in by our

members.

You might be encouraged to pick up a kit with instructions for assembly, a pinned quilt ready for

quilting (great for practice!), or a completed quilt top with bindings that need to be sewn. There are also

quick projects like pillow cases and burp cloths. You don’t need to sign out what you have taken, we are

just happy to have your participation!

If you have taken any of these items and haven’t been able to finish them, just bring them back for

someone else to finish.

Please return all finished items to the November meeting for the December presentation of quilts for

charities.

Comfort Givers also continues to need your bar codes from Hobbs batting bags. Those codes really

help keep the batting expense down!

Piece for Peace Women from all around the world are creating a huge patchwork quilt – PIECE for PEACE, which will

serve as an artistic expression of our desire for peace in Israel and Palestine. This project is organized by

Women Wage Peace.

So far, they have nearly 20 finished quilts. They were presented in public during the March of Hope events

that took place in Israel. They will continue making quilts until there is peace! Squares are being done by

women of every religion and from all over the world.

How can you participate? By making and contributing squares that express messages of Peace and Hope.

Here’s how:

Use cotton fabric size 14” x 14” (35x35cm). Leave 1”(2.5cm) seam on each side so squares can be

joined together.

Decorate in any technique – applique, embroidery, glued, beaded, drawn with permanent pens or

markers.

Sign your name and country in permanent pen/marker on the front of the square.

You can photograph yourself holding your square and post it on their Facebook page - Piece for

Peace

Give your completed squares to CQA member Dayla Dektor and she will mail them.

Each square “Piece for Peace” receives is numbered, labeled and put in a database with the makers info.

They then sew the peace squares into individual quilts: each one is composed of 5x5 squares (totally 25

squares, 1.5x1.5 meters each).

They ask that you please join them in making a Piece for Peace!

Any questions, or additional information contact Dayla Dektor, 805-302-5795
