President’s Message Hello. Our annual picnic turned out great again. We had temperatures in the 90's all week before, but it magically cooled down to the 80's with a strong, cool breeze in the park. The turn-out was good, and Bud Gruver and Debbie Stockey did a fantastic job of grilling the hamburgers and hot dogs. Also, many great side dishes were brought in that made it hard to choose (I managed to try one of everything and it was all good). Thanks to all that came out and made it a success. We actually didn't want to go home afterward. Here are the STATS for the months of May and June: Month Unique Visitors Number of Visits Pages May 2019 478 951 1442 June 2019 579 1372 2218 The International Meet will be held in Mansfield, Ohio, on September 11-14th this year. If you've never been to an SDC International Meet, you should consider it. At least 8 members of our chapter will be attending, so talk to them about making such a trip entails. They've made the trip every year for many years, they'll know. Also in September will be the Southwest Zone Meet in Sacramento on September 26-29th. It will be hosted by the Karel Staple Chapter, and the host hotel will be the Lions Gate Hotel. You should consider this one as well, and it's quite a bit closer and probably more manageable. Stay out of the heat if you can, and we'll see you at Coco's on Saturday, August 10th and 4:30.

From the Editor’s Desk This will be my last edition of the Sparkplug. Beginning in September, your new editor will be Jan Jacobson. Thanks to all those who sent me kind words of appreciation for my past efforts. I had a great time doing it. When going through some old files, I found some “Pickles” comic strips and an email I sent to the artist. Earl and Opal from the strip own a bullet nose! I have included them in this, my last newsletter. I have included many car shows in August on the Upcoming Events page. Write something up if you go to a car show and send it to Jan. She may use it in the next newsletter. Thanks to Bob Valeski for his write up on the Great Race. It looked like a good time was had by all. Also, please note his request for the return of his Great Race Program he had at the picnic. See page 9. Please send any “For Sale” ads or “Items Wanted” ads to Jan for inclusion in upcoming newsletters! Marcie

GREAT RACE RECAP by Bob Valeski

Six BCOIE chapter members, Rosiland & John Metzker, Jan & Gene Jacobson and Bev & Bob Valeski,

attended the start of the 2019 Great Race in Riverside on June 22, 2019. It was an awesome sight to see such

a variety of cars ranging in age from 1909 to 1972 and a mix of just about any imaginable cars take off at the

starting line on Mission Ave. (all 120 of them) at one minute intervals which took from 11:00 AM thru 1:00

PM. There were four Studebakers in the mix and five X-Cup (student) entries. The two accompanying

reprints from the 2019 Great Race official souvenir program include Great Race General Info and Great

Race Class Divisions. If you go on www.greatrace.com you will see a 21 minute video covering the entire

race and detailed descriptions of each day on the road with tons of really good pictures. Check it out. By the

way, a 1914 Hudson hill climb car won the top prize of $50,000.

Additional note

I brought my 2019 Great Race Program to the Chapter picnic on Sunday, July 14th to share with the folks

and someone else brought some magazines which were free for the taking. I suspect my program got

mistaken for a free magazine. Well, it wasn't and I would like to get it back because I was intending to keep

it as a memento. I would appreciate it if you would check and see if you inadvertently took it. If you have it

please contact me on [email protected] and we can arrange a mutually convenient time and place for me

to retrieve it. Thank you. Bob Valeski
