The legislative process is well underway for MPTA’s legislative priority, Direct Consumer Access to Physical Therapy. Numerous activities have occurred in the first half of 2013 to work towards achieving this goal. Examples include the MPTA Legislative Breakfast in February, attendance at m u ltiple legislative events to speak directly with your state legislators, and MPT-PAC’s hosting of a successful

fundraising event for Representative Margaret O’Brien. Currently, we are working with various legislators to rally the necessary support to have successful introduction of Direct Consumer Access legislation in the Senate. MPTA has received word from Senator John Moolenaar (Midland) that he will sponsor the main bill. MPTA will continue to work to keep you informed of important updates and will notify you when we have a bill number for you to reference when you contact your legislator.

MPTA is also closely monitoring HB 4612 which seeks to reform Auto No-Fault in the state of Michigan. Michigan is the only state in the country with this form of insurance. The legislation would cap catastrophic claims at $1 million, and would provide some reduction in auto insurance premiums. This bill was passed out of the House Insurance Committee and will now be considered by the Michigan House. MPTA has stated its opposition to HB 4612. The fate of the bill is uncertain at this time. Currently, there are a number of groups opposed to HB 4612 such as the Michigan Hospital Association and the Coalition Protecting Auto No-Fault, as well as other prominent political figures.

The legislative process can move swiftly and without much notice. Your membership in MPTA helps to ensure you can receive up to date information, and when the time is right, receive calls for action to let your voice be heard by your legislator. I personally thank you for your membership and ongoing support of physical therapy and the MPTA.

EDITOR’S MESSAGESubmitted by Karen E.H. Grossnickle, MS, PT – MPTA Shorelines Editor

It is great to see more and more members submitting highlights of their careers as well as those of fellow peers. The “Member Spotlight” and “Kudos Korner” features are designated places for accolades, achievements, awards, and information to be shared about the special things our members are receiving and doing. So many members of the MPTA are active professionally and personally in the communities for which we live and serve. Many of these activities provide great opportunities to market the physical therapy brand and to share with the public what physical therapists and physical therapist’s assistants do. Other activities highlight the service for which our members feel committed to sharing with others. These features are not meant to highlight only a few, but to highlight the activities of ANY and ALL members. To this end, Shorelines needs your help in identifying members who are serving the communities in which they work and live in unique and profound ways. We want to highlight those working at the grass roots or those who go about achieving quietly great things! In order to feature individuals, we need to know who these individuals are and then be able to gather information about them for an article. If you know of someone who deserves to be featured in a “Member Spotlight” article or who has recently received an award or accolade, please submit to the MPTA via email, the name of the person, your contact information and a bit about what they are doing to make a difference.

In this issue you will see that one of our members, Karen Hallay, PTA has recently been recognized by the APTA for a Certificate of Advanced Proficiency in the Musculoskeletal category. This requires advanced knowledge, skill and a professional desire to make a difference in the care of patients she serves. Ms. Hallay deserves a great big CONGRATULATIONS from ALL members of the MPTA. Not many have achieved this proficiency. The opportunity to pursue this advanced proficiency is one of the benefits to PTAs for being members of the APTA. This news came to us from the APTA directly. We might not have been informed otherwise and sadly, would not have been able to extend our congratulations as a membership.

It would be great to report more successful stories about our members! So again, I will ask you all to help us by informing us of these types of positive member actions. The staff members of this newsletter are volunteers – in other words, we do not have roving reporters! We need you to be our eyes and ears, and to pen us when you see or hear news worth reporting about the great things our members are doing!

This issue of Shorelines is unique because it is our annual edition that we make available to all physical therapists in Michigan – members of the MPTA or not. Read how the MPTA, under the leadership of Craig Miller and Amy Campbell, is working on legislative issues that impact your practice. Read about how Marty Sytsema and members of the reimbursement committee are working on issues that impact your practice. Find out what’s happening about mandatory continuing competence and when will it be required for your license renewal. Read about the upcoming events at your District level and at the Fall Conference. Read it now, and if you are not a member, consider joining – because you won’t be able to read about it later.

DIRECTOR #2 Submitted by Corey Sobeck, PT, DScPT, OCS, OMPT MPTA Director #2 - Professional Development and Membership

It is my pleasure to serve on the MPTA Board of Directors as Director #2 - Professional Development and Membership. I look forward to hearing from MPTA members related to these areas.

MANDATORY CONTINUING COMPETENCE - PUBLIC ACT 55-2009 There are two parts to Public Act 55-2009 (PA 55-09). The first part provided for physical therapist assistant (PTA) licensure. Achieving licensure for PTAs ensures that only qualified individuals may practice using the title PTA which protects both the public and the profession. The second part of PA 55-09 mandates that PTs and PTAs will be required to demonstrate continuing competence for license renewal.

N o im pl em entation d ate for m and atory continued P rofessional D ev el opm ent R eq uirem ents for re-l icensure of P Ts and P TA s has been establ ished by the State of M ichigan.

MPTA learned at the April 2013 PT Board meeting that the process for establishing PA 55-09 (mandatory continued competence for re-licensure component) is ongoing, with no target date as to when it will be implemented. The next opportunity for an update will be the PT Board Meeting on July 9, 2013. MPTA will keep all members informed.

The Michigan Board of Physical Therapy continues to examine the legal and practice issues impacting dry needling by physical therapists in Michigan. Again, the next opportunity for an update will be the PT Board Meeting on July 9, 2013 and MPTA will keep all members informed.

The Federation of State Boards of Physical Therapy (FSBPT) presented on their tracking tool that allows PTs and PTAs to plan for, track and manage their individual continued competence and educational activities at the April 2013 PT Board meeting. The tool is called “aPTitude” and is free to licensees, vendors and jurisdictions. There is no mandate that aPTitude must be used; the presentation was to educate that PT Board and PT community about the tool.

Go to www.fsbpt.org and click on “continued competence” to learn more.

MEMBERSHIP Membership numbers as of May 7, 2013 are as follows:

• PT Members: 1,882• PTA Members: 262• Student Members: 652• Total Members: 2,796

These numbers represent a decrease in professional membership, but an increase in student membership since the previous Shorelines went to print. Please encourage non-members to join the MPTA and receive all the benefits of membership, including great conferences, networking, legislative and reimbursement advocacy and more.

In an effort to recruit new members, the summer issue of Shorelines will be available to non-members through the MPTA website from June 1 to August 31, 2013. Please spread the word to your colleagues who are not yet members.

MPTA IS WORKING FOR YOU• MPTA continues to follow the PT Administrative

Rules process closely to keep members informed on timelines when mandatory Professional Development Requirements will be required for re-licensure.

• MPTA will keep members informed when the PT Administrative Rules are open for public comment.

• Both PTs and PTAs will be required to demonstrate continued competence when the PT Administrative Rules are finalized. Again - No target date is currently set for implementation.

• MPTA will continue to sponsor excellent educational seminars at a discounted rate for our members.

DIRECTOR #5 Submitted by J. Tim Zipple, DScPT, OCS, FAAOMPT – MPTA Director #5 - Student Relations Committee

There was a recent PT Program Directors (PT-AAAC) Committee meeting held on April 18th in Okemos. The Program Directors gave their reports. There will be some faculty turnover at a few of the PT Programs

in the coming months. It appears that several of the programs are taking on larger class sizes (or satellite programs) and with aging faculty there will be a need in the next 5-10 years to replace retiring faculty members. At the Spring Conference, we had a brief PTA Program Directors Committee (PTA-AAAC) meeting where six schools were represented. Topics of discussion revolved around licensure preparation courses and tending to the needs of students coming back to school for a second career.

In my role as liaison to the Student Relations Committee (SRC), I participated in the Spring Orientation for new members. There was a smaller turnout from all of the available PT and PTA Programs in Michigan, but new student officers were elected.

We tabled the discussion on setting another theme for the Student Conclave in 2014. There was a smaller turnout this year at the 2013 Student Conclave (compared to the last 2-3 years), but it was still deemed a success by the student participants, who enjoyed the networking and mock interviews/résumé reviews. The SRC Officers will spend the next couple of months considering potential themes. Surveys from the 2013 Student Conclave will be useful in providing feedback on potential content areas at the next conclave. They have also been charged with assisting with content suggestions for the Student Conclave brochures and identifying useful articles that will help guide their professional development.

FEDERAL AFFAIRS LIAISON REPORTSubmitted by Craig Miller, PT – MPTA Director #1, Federal Affairs Liaison

APTA hosted another successful Federal Advocacy Forum April 14-16th. I was there with additional Michigan constituents: Barb Eby, PT; Claire Dulin, SPT (Grand Valley State University); and Sarah LaBerge, SPT (George Washington University). APTA staff shared current federal issues impacting physical therapy. This has been a very active time for federal issues! The four of us were able to meet with congressional members and staff on April 16th to discuss the APTA’s priority issues. Currently, the APTA has the following legislative priorities: Therapy Cap Repeal (H.R. 713 & S. 367), Physical Therapists as a member of the National Health Services Corps (H.R. 1252, S. 602), and a fix to the flawed Sustainable Growth Rate (SGR) formula. Additional federal issues of note also included: Functional Limitations Reporting (mandatory for outpatient PT Medicare Part B claims submitted starting on July 1, 2013), Multiple Procedure Payment Reduction (MPPR), and Manual Medical Review (MMR) process of PT services above the $3700 Part B threshold. Detailed information on these issues and more is available at http://www.apta.org/Payment/Medicare/. Membership with the APTA helps to ensure that PT is well represented on the national level, thank you for your membership!

MPTA COMMITTEE NEWSCONFERENCE COMMITTEESubmitted by Karin Crute, PT - MPTA Director #3 and Conference Committee Chair

THE CENTER OF IT ALLAs our healthcare system moves forward, re-creating itself, physical therapists and physical therapists assistants are well positioned to be key players in the community, caring for members of the community. In this endeavor, many challenges have already come to the forefront and our profession has faced them head-on. But more challenges will come forward and at the end of the day, our goal at MPTA is to prepare our members and our profession for physical therapists and physical therapists assistants to be “In the Center of It All!”

This fall, our Annual Fall Conference will move south – to Southfield and the Westin Hotel. With good constructive feedback from our attendees at last year’s Fall and Spring Conference, we are working hard to have an exciting venue of educational opportunities, fun filled events and a variety of ways to network. The conference is scheduled for October 11 and 12, 2013. Friday will continue with the tradition of focus centering on research and Saturday will host a variety of educational topics, designed to have something for everyone. As always, you will be updated with the latest “going ons” in our profession – putting you in “the Center of It All.” Plan to attend!

WHAT MEMBERSHIP BENEFITS DOES YOUR PROFESSIONAL ASSOCIATION PROVIDE?Your MPTA membership brings with it many benefits – one of which is conferences. Conferences, which include our membership meetings, are held twice a year and are rotated around the state. We remain committed to working to coordinate the educational programming throughout the state and to provide a variety of educational and professional opportunities to physical therapists and to physical therapists assistants. Our Spring and Fall Conferences are not only about learning, they also provide you with the ability to network with your peers, as well as vendors. Conferences are a time to hear the latest information affecting your practice in Michigan and a chance to personally meet the leaders of our profession. I encourage you to take advantage of this unique opportunity and to come join us at one or both of the conferences.

REIMBURSEMENT COMMITTEESubmitted by Martin Systema, PT, MSPT, OMPT, FAAOMPT, CIMT - MPTA Director #4 and Reimbursement Committee Chair

On April 18, members of the reimbursement committee met with the leadership of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan and Landmark. Topics of discussion included alerting us to the status of the disaffiliation process for providers who have been in Category C for too long. 27 letters were sent out to providers, and the appeals process has begun for 22 of those. BCBS showed data that identified Michigan as the highest utilizer of therapy services compared to other BCBS plans around the country.

We also met with Priority Health on April 18. For years, Priority Health paid providers on the west side of Michigan on a fee-for-service model, but the new contract with providers will pay a flat $75 per visit (plus $90 for initial eval and $45 for re-eval). This is a significant decrease in reimbursement in West Michigan where Priority Health is a major payer. Providers had until May 1 to sign the new contracts, and they faced the possibility of being removed from the network if they did not sign it. Priority Health realizes that not all treatments are the same and that a flat rate of reimbursement is not the perfect solution. They were very interested in learning about the Alternative Payment System that the APTA has been working on. We will continue with these discussions.

Another interesting development with Priority Health is their initiation of a “Transparency Program.” By early 2014, Priority Health will be listing prices and (eventually) outcomes of data on their websites to allow consumers information to choose their PT providers based on cost and quality. At this point, only private practices are getting the new contracts. Hospitals are going to have the option to choose the new contract and lower reimbursement so they don’t appear more expensive than the private practices around them.

Both BCBS and Priority Health expressed their desire to continue meeting with the MPTA to maintain the positive working relationships we both can benefit from.

Submitted by Edward Mathis, PT, DPT – MPT PAC Chair and UP District Chair

2013 has been a busy year for the MPT-PAC with 25 individual legislator and 3 party caucus fundraisers already attended at the time of this submission. We have continued to target past supporters of consumer direct access in the House and leadership in both the House and Senate. I would like to thank Sue Talley, Mike Shoemaker, Amy Campbell, Jake Jakubiak Kovacek, Bruce Diven, and Cindy Kincaid, as well as our lobbyist at MHSA – Evie Sweeney, for attending these important events as we educate our legislators on the importance of consumer direct access to physical therapy. As we wait for the introduction of our bill into legislation during the 2013-2014 session, we will need to increase our efforts in both the Senate and the House as we target members of the committees that our bill is assigned to. Your contribution to MPT-PAC is needed today to allow

us to continue attending these important fundraisers. The average House event costs $150, while the Senate typically runs $250 an event. While we had an excellent Spring Conference raising nearly $5000, we are still running over a $3000 deficit to the contributions we received this year as compared to last year. We currently sit at an approximate $14577.75 of total assets, which is considerable less than where we were at a few years ago. If consumer direct access is important to you, now is the time to make your contribution. We have three “Club” levels for contributors:

• Lake Superior Club ($500+), • Lake Michigan Club ($250-$499), and • Lake Huron Club ($100-$249).

Club level contributors are recognized in Shorelines and the MPT-PAC page each year and receive a pin. The MPT-PAC can accept credit card donation via a secure payment link on the MPTA webpage or fill out an envelope available from your District Chair where check or credit card is accepted. We also have a payment plan available to spread out your donation to any amount that fits into your budget. Join the club today!

HISTORIC MPTA/MHA COLLABORATION STRIVES TO IMPROVE ICU CARE THROUGH EARLY MOBILIZATION PROGRAMBy Jill Finn SPT and Hannah Smith SPT from Oakland University

The Michigan Physical Therapy Association (MPTA) and Michigan Health and Hospital Association (MHA) have recently embarked on an historic joint venture to improve the care of the sickest of our patients. Recent awareness has been raised to reinforce the need for early mobility in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). These programs have been shown to reduce length of stay, improve patient outcomes and survival, and provide a cost savings to hospitals. These findings inspired a collaboration of healthcare professionals from a variety of backgrounds (PT, OT, RN, RT, and MD) to problem solve effectiveness of early mobility, which occurred in conjunction with the MPTA Spring Conference in Lansing. There were over fifty participants representing more than 25 different healthcare organizations in Michigan.Speakers Christine George RN, MS (MHA) and Noel Baldwin RN, BSN (U of M Hospital) provided background on previous research regarding the barriers that clinicians face in the ICU and the importance of early mobility. In the past, barriers included uncertainty regarding vital signs, medications and sedation, and establishing medical stability. Recent research is showing that adverse events are rare and should not be a barrier to patient mobility. Studies have also found that Michigan ICU’s have reduced mortality rates and costs comparative to surrounding states due to this introduction in early mobilization and other Keystone concepts (www.mhakeystonecenter.org). Also, research demonstrated that patients who were mobilized earlier in their ICU stay returned to a normal functional status earlier, the ventilator was removed earlier, and delirium was decreased by 50%. Overall, these findings decreased the length of stay in the ICU and hospital costs. Despite the mounting evidence of data demonstrating the benefits of early ICU mobility, barriers still remain. Some of the examples of barriers to early ICU mobility included minimal lines of communication between nurses and

physical therapists, the perception of nursing as the “gate keeper” to patient care, the fact that there is no standard criterion to follow treatment, and bed rest orders are prominent which inhibit patient mobility in the ICU. Dr. Michael Shoemaker, MPTA Vice President, from Grand Valley State University, used electronic voting devices to garner feedback from the content experts as their perceptions about the best way to facilitate early mobility in the ICU. After the survey, Dr. Chris Wilson, MPTA Chief Delegate and representative of Beaumont Health System and Oakland University, facilitated a small group discussion to drill down further on key topics. Throughout the course’s small group discussions, it was found that walker and bed equipment, insufficient staff, perceived instability of patient, and time required to get patient ready for treatment were barriers detrimental to early patient mobility. After discussing these issues, it was reaffirmed that further research and collaboration is needed to achieve a standard of care for early mobility in the ICU. Health care professionals across the board are excited to see a change and are willing to break down the barriers ahead. The seminar was an excellent start in achieving these goals. The MPTA will be holding future meetings to further address these issues and spread awareness. Special thanks to Chris Wilson PT, DPT, GCS and Michael Shoemaker PT, PhD, DPT, GCS for leading this course and bringing awareness to the MPTA community. For further information, results of the survey, or references, please contact Chris Wilson at: [email protected]. The MPTA would like to thank Lucy Koivisto from MHA and Jill Finn SPT, Katie Stachowicz SPT, Hannah Smith, SPT and Courtney Krawczyk from Oakland University for logistical support of the seminar - CW

EASTERN DISTRICTSubmitted by Michael Nanzer DPT, MBA, CSCS – Eastern District Chair

The Eastern District continues to have success with free educational offerings. We had about 50 people attend our most recent conference. A big thanks goes out to Katie Palazzolo, PT for her continued efforts to make these educational opportunities possible. If you have suggestions for future conferences or want to lead one yourself, please contact an Eastern District Board member for more information.

Direct access is a very real possibility, but will only come about with our combined efforts. We need to take more initiative in promoting our services and abilities to our government officials. Take every opportunity to meet with your senators and representatives to push direct access.

The Eastern District is always looking for people interested to serve on the board or in many other roles. If you are interested, please contact me at [email protected]

WESTERN DISTRICTSubmitted by Ed Orloff, PT, DPT, CSCS, Cert. MDT - MPTA Western District Chair

Being a member of the APTA/MPTA is probably more important today than ever. We are in a continually changing healthcare landscape with new and convoluted rules and regulations that seem to pop up each day. The resources included in your professional membership are invaluable when it comes to navigating this new era of healthcare delivery. We need all clinicians to become members and to actively participate in our profession to protect it and expand the public knowledge or our expertise and capability of autonomous practice.

I would like to thank all the current members out there. I also encourage those that are contemplating membership to take the up this challenge and join today.

The Western District will be holding elections this fall for Chair, Vice Chair, Secretary and Treasurer. If you are interested in becoming more involved this is a great opportunity to get started!

Finally, please save the date for the Annual Western District PAC event on August 24th. The event will be

held at the home of Meri Goehring from 2 pm – 5 pm. Check the WD Facebook page and MPTA website at http://www.mpta.com/district_news_western.php for location details and updates. Last year was a great time and very successful, raising more than $1,800.

UPPER PENINSULA DISTRICTEdward Mathis, PT, DPT – MPTA Treasurer, MPTA Upper Peninsula District Chair, MPT-PAC Chair

The UP District has had a busy spring with one information meeting and two excellent continuing education courses. Our next big event occurs on July 26-27 in Marquette.

The Annual UP District Gold Social will be held at The Heritage, Marquette Golf Club.

This event is a nine-hole scramble starting at ~3pm. If you would like to put together a foursome, please contact one of your District Officers. Following this event, we will have a social/MPT-PAC fundraiser at a TBD establishment in Marquette at ~7pm. Last year, we raised over $1000 for the PAC, and this year, we will be joined by a special guest: MPTA President Susan Talley. This event has traditionally been an excellent time to become educated on current Chapter affairs while networking with other professionals within the District and is typically the highlight of the District year. Please plan to attend this exciting event. If you cannot attend, please consider making a donation for the MPT-PAC fundraiser.

As an added incentive to attend, we have moved this event from a Tuesday to a Friday and will follow the next day with a continuing education course. Jeff Moore, PT, DPT, will be teaching: Subgrouping Treatments for Low Back Pain: A Paradigm Shift. Jeff has assisted in course instruction with the Evidence in Motion group and is well versed in the area. The course will be held at Active Physical Therapy in Marquette and is a FREE course so make plans to attend. Please stay tuned to the District web page and Facebook page for more details as the event draws closer.

Finally, I am happy to announce that Chris Moore, PT, DPT has been promoted to the vacant Vice-Chair position. Chris will also continue to function as the Treasurer. The nominating committee is also looking for interested candidates for the following positions to be elected to begin service in 2014:

MPTA BECOMES MEMBER OF THE MICHIGAN CANCER CONSORTIUMThe Michigan Physical Therapy Association is now a proud member of the Michigan Cancer Consortium (MCC). Deb Doherty, PT, PhD, CEAS, Assistant Professor at Oakland University Physical Therapy Program and Oncology Rehabilitation Specialist at Hills and Dales Hospital in Cass City has been appointed as the first representative from the MPTA to serve on this committee. Jackie Drouin, PT, Associate Professor at Oakland University Physical Therapy Program is the alternate representative. MCC is an organization that “provides a forum for collaboration among its members to improve cancer outcomes for Michigan residents.” (Please check out the website at http://www.michigancancer.org/ ). The website has many resources available free of charge to all. It is our hope that ‘sitting at the table’ will bring greater awareness about Oncology Rehabilitation. We are now among representatives from numerous organizations across the great state of Michigan that together serve to decrease the burden of cancer. Awareness of Oncology Rehabilitation is essential as we work towards direct access and work to secure rehabilitation as standard of practice for all patients receiving a cancer diagnosis. Please look forward to updates in future Shorelines.

Andrews University Sumitted by Kim Coleman-Ferreira, PT, MSPT, DCE

Membership has many benets and the faculty at Andrews University PT program believe making membership a priority for our students is an essential part of ensuring involvement once they graduate. All students in the program are members and are encouraged to take part in local and national events. Each class has an APTA representative who promotes activities and involvement amongst their peers including underclassmen. As an encouragement to his underclassmen Daniel Stam, SPT (Class of 2014 APTA Representative) says “I really encourage particularly rst and second year students to consider joining the MPTA Student Relations Committee. It is just a great experience to become involved more on the state level of the profession; and energizing to be a part of the annual student conclave in Lansing!”

Our faculty benet from membership in MPTA as the association provides an avenue to remain connected to current events and needs of the profession; additionally it provides an opportunity to disseminate research. The MPTA is an advocate for our profession and as faculty we are providing a role model for our students by being involved at the national and state level of our professional associations. Clinical Instructors can also encourage students to embrace the association and its benets by being active members themselves. Students’ clinical experiences are enriched when they observe active participation, by their CI, in the association.

Central Michigan UniversitySubmitted by: Karen Grossnickle, PT, MS

As always, there has been a great deal of activity for the students and faculty of the Program in PT at CMU so far during 2013. Forty-three students in the DPT Class of 2013 graduated on May 3rd. All are looking forward to their future careers as physical therapists – we welcome them to the profession! These graduates formally presented ndings from their doctoral projects at our 17th Annual Research and Case Report Colloquium held on the CMU campus on May 3rd prior to the evening graduation ceremony. The event was attended by many clinical and academic faculty as well as family and friends of the graduates. It was a great time for celebrating the scholarly activities and contributions of these future therapists.

Our students always stay very busy with school, professional activities, community outreach and service. In April, the CMU PT Student Organization (PTSO) participated in the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life held on the CMU campus. Students participated in the 24 hour walk contributing pledges to the campus wide event. PTSO members provided massages to other walkers during the event. In total, Central Michigan University students raised $70,535.00, exceeding last year’s total of $62,300.00.

Also in April, the PTSO hosted the 5th Annual 5K Run/Walk to benet the Michigan Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. The event was preceded by an evening spaghetti dinner. The event was deemed a success once again and is becoming a popular spring time ritual for some of the walkers and runners. Funds raised by the event will be donated to support the Michigan Chapter of the National Sclerosis Society. Total donation amount was not yet available at the time of article submission.

Along with all of these other outreach activities, our students continue to provide a valuable service to the community through our pro-bono “Hands for Health” clinic. Hands for Health is an award winning, student run, faculty supervised clinic that provides physical therapy services for individuals in the community who do not have health insurance or who are under-insured.

Drs. Elaine Betts and Deborah Silkwood-Sherer offered an independent study course this past semester, which involved taking 31 rst and second year students to Ireland for seven days. Students visited physical therapy programs where they interacted with faculty and students at several universities. Students had the opportunity to discuss the different health care systems between the United States and Ireland as well as the educational processes. They were able to articulate pros and cons to the two different health care systems as well as educational systems. Additionally, students participated in hippotherapy sessions under the tutelage of Dr. Silkwood-Sherer.

On a nal note, we welcomed forty-eight rst year students to our program on May 13th. Students in our 2nd year class are currently engaged in their rst clinical rotations while students in our 3rd year class are completing course work in preparation for their nal clinical internship experiences this fall. We look forward to working with all of these students as they move through the preparation for professional practice.

Kellogg Community CollegeSubmitted by Barbara Simmons, PTA, M.Ed.

The Kellogg Community College Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) program continues to be impressed with the generosity of clinicians who provide such excellent guidance to our students as they “pay it forward” as clinical instructors. First year students attend two components of observational rotations while second year students take part in the more in-depth, long-term part-time and then full-time afliations. In the clinical setting they learn how to put together all of the academic pieces and apply that knowledge into the level of patient care we all expect. This would not occur without clinicians who accept the challenges and rewards of mentoring students during clinical education. Thank you.

We would like to congratulate Heather Bodell, PTA, of Capitol Physical Therapy In Charlotte and Kosta Sevastopoulos, PTA, of Bronson Battle Creek Hospital. They have been named our Outstanding Clinical Instructor Award recipients for 2012-2013. Thank you to both of them as well as to their employers for accepting students and doing an exceptional job in mentoring.

This year we have graduated our highest class size ever with 25 students now preparing for their licensing exam and application processing. The students in the class of 2013 have had some very exciting clinical rotations in sites nearby and as far away as Elkhart and Angola, Indiana. Our rst year class is preparing for the intense summer semester which includes pathology, pediatrics, neurology, functional skills, and orthopedics courses.

We continually modify the PTA program and are currently working to add in more electronic documentation, emphasis on functional note-writing and keeping up with other current trends in the eld. It is always exciting to see our chosen career eld “moving forward.”

If you are a graduate of our program and are not on the e-mail listserv, please contact BJ Simmons at [email protected] to get added to the listserv. For questions about the Kellogg Community College PTA Program, please contact Program Coordinator, Julie Roberts at (269) 965-3931 x 2270 or e-mail her at [email protected] . Our web site can be found at www.kellogg.edu/pta.

Mid Michigan Community CollegeSubmitted by Crystal Parker, PTA, BS

MMCC has 14 alumni to add to the PTA Program roles. Many of these graduates have secured employment by graduation having passed the PTA NPTE in April. The faculty is very proud of the graduates’ success. They were focused and committed at their clinical education sites and were graded highly by their clinical instructors.

The program is selecting the cohort to begin in the fall. The cohort will be a mixed set of 22 students – some from the old waiting list and some from the new selective admissions process. Currently, we are working to expand our clinical sites to include more opportunities in the central Michigan area in out-patient, in-patient, and long-term care settings. With the additional 2 students to our cohorts and the selective admissions process, we are anticipating a greater need for clinical placements in our local area. If your facility is near our Mt. Pleasant campus, and employs PTAs who are interested in teaching and giving back to the profession, Crystal Parker would like to hear from you.

This summer the faculty will be preparing for the MMCC PTA Program accreditation renewal. The CAPTE onsite review team will visit in June, 2014. We are asking center coordinators and clinical instructors who are afliated with our program to complete an updated Clinical Site Information Form (CSIF) by the end of November to prepare our clinical site les for the CAPTE visit. Also, we will be soliciting for clinical education staff to participate in an interview meeting with the review team while they are onsite. The PTA Program faculty hopes that clinical instructors and coordinators will volunteer to meet with them.

Please consider visiting the PTA Program website at www.midmich.edu/pta for additional information. The website provides links to program processes and documents including contact information for Amanda Wismer, PTA Program Director, and Crystal Parker, Clinical Coordinator.

The visceral and neural systems influence musculoskeletal articulations and tension patterns in the body causing functional and structural problems. An integrative approach to evaluation and treatment requires assessment of the structural relationships between the viscera, and their fascial or ligamentous attachments to the musculoskeletal system. It also requires an understanding of the dural and neural components that are often missed when treating trauma and dysfunctions.
