BOROUGH OF MANHATTAN COMMUNITY COLLEGE PRESIDENTIAL SEARCH

Chancellor Félix V. Matos Rodríguez and the Board of Trustees of The City University of New York (CUNY) invite nominations and applications for the next president of Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC), the largest community college in New York State, with a distinguished record of serving a diverse urban community and positioning students to move up the academic and economic ladder.

BMCC is renowned for its diversity, affordability, customized, wrap-around academic options, professional development, state-of-the-art facilities and contributions to the community. It represents the vibrancy of Manhattan, providing opportunities to students in an array of industries and propelling them to the American dream. As a sign of the college’s transformative powers, BMCC is routinely ranked among the top community colleges nationally in rankings for social mobility and academic excellence.

The City University of New York has seven community colleges, 11 senior colleges and seven graduate or professional institutions spread across New York City’s five boroughs. The next President of BMCC will join the other twenty-four leaders of these institutions and sit on the Council of Presidents convened by the Chancellor.

Enrolling more than 25,000 students in credit-bearing programs and another 10,000 through its continuing education offerings, BMCC features a diverse, inclusive and aspirational student body hailing from all corners of the city. Fifty four percent of BMCC students are first generation college students. Twenty six percent reside in Brooklyn, 18% in the Bronx, 16% in Queens and 15% in Manhattan. The school enrolls more international students–representing 155 countries–than any other community college in the Northeast, stamping it as a champion of diversity and inclusiveness. The President serves as the chief academic and administrative officer of the college and reports to the Chancellor of The City University of New York, working within policies set by the CUNY Board of Trustees. This is an ideal opportunity for an experienced, collaborative leader who embraces access, equity and student success and advances innovative pathways to higher education to take the helm of one of the most successful and prominent community colleges in the country.

The history of BMCC is one of rapid growth and expansion. Founded in 1963, BMCC started as a small, primarily business-oriented community college offering programs aimed at the city’s robust business community. As its numbers and offerings continued to grow, a new building spanning four city blocks was constructed in 1983 to serve as the college’s main campus. Ten years later, in 1993, Miles and Shirley Fiterman donated Fiterman Hall to BMCC, the largest single donation ever made to a community college. BMCC has played a historic role in the renaissance of lower Manhattan. Located in Tribeca, in close proximity to Wall Street, BMCC students, faculty and staff were directly affected by the tragic events of 9/11. BMCC served as an emergency center during the aftermath, demonstrating how a community college could step up to address the needs of the surrounding residents. As lower Manhattan regained its footing in the ensuing years, so did the college. Rebounding from the loss of Fiterman Hall, BMCC launched the 2012-2013 academic year with the opening of the rebuilt Fiterman Hall. Fiterman Hall was rebuilt, just as many other buildings in lower Manhattan went from wreckage to revitalization. While it was a difficult time for BMCC, it was also an opportunity for BMCC to showcase its spirit of generosity and ability to serve as a beacon of hope for all New Yorkers. BMCC also occupies 70 Murray Street, administers a satellite campus – CUNY in the Heights - in northern Manhattan and offers classes in Brooklyn and the Bronx. With so many locations, the college truly serves as an anchor institution for the residents of New York City.

THE CAMPUS BMCC’s campus is comprised of its main campus building, located at 199 Chambers Street and is situated on 4.28 acres of land in a building that was designed with the Hudson River harbor in mind — shaped like a ship with its helm pointed to sea. Spanning four blocks, it is equivalent to the Empire State Building lying on its side and is the hub of life at the college. Two of its other larger buildings - Murray Building, and the Miles and Shirley Fiterman Hall - are also located in the heart of lower Manhattan. The college’s Center for Continuing Education and Workforce Development is located in the financial district. BMCC’s location fosters opportunities for students to explore the artistic communities of Tribeca and SoHo, the dynamic downtown financial district, and the center of New York City government at City Hall. BMCC also serves the Inwood, Washington Heights and Northern Bronx communities, through CUNY in the Heights, which it administers, where it brings more educational opportunities to neighborhoods by creating multiple pathways to degrees and careers with family-sustaining wages. Famous landmarks near the BMCC main campus include The World Trade Center, 9/11 Memorial, the Oculus, and Trinity Church. In the last five years Borough of Manhattan Community College has received approximately $40 million in direct appropriations for capital projects on campus.
