Bexar Audubon Society is looking forwardto great things in 2020! Bird supportersand enthusiasts will have twice thenumber of meetings for information andinspiration about birds and theirecosystems in 2020: BAS will meet at 7:00PM on the fourth Wednesday of eachmonth at the William R. Sinkin Eco Centro(1802 North Main Avenue—corner of MainAve. and E. Locust) in addition to San

Antonio Audubon meetings on the first Thursday of each month at the San AntonioZoo Education Center.

At the January 22 BAS meeting, Craig Hensley of Texas Parks & Wildlife will teachus how to put the iNaturalist App into action—and the meeting will be followed by afield trip on January 25 to Brackenridge Park focused on using iNaturalist in the field. On February 26, BAS will welcome two representatives from the International CraneFoundation (ICF)—North American program director Dr. Elizabeth Smith and TexasOutreach Coordinator Anna Turkett—who will give us in depth information on whatICF is doing to insure the survival of these iconic Texas Coastal birds. By the way, gosee the newly re-opened Whooping Crane exhibit at the San Antonio Zoo to witnesssome of the incredible behavior or a breeding pair and to learn more about theirsurvival story. After you hear this story, you will want to visit Aransas Wildlife Refuge(use your Duck Stamp for admittance) and perhaps take a trip on Captain TommyMoore’s boat, The Skimmer to see these magnificent birds on their Texas coastalwintering grounds.

There is so much more to do for the birds. The BAS board has lots of ideas forincreasing our outreach to the public about the need for more focus on birdconservation—to help reverse the downward trend of population decline of many ofour formerly most common birds. BAS will become increasingly involved inconservation and advocacy for birds in 2020. We are initiating an “experiment” torelocate birds displaced from the Elmendorf Lake Park colonial rookery necessitatedby the threat to aviation at Joint Base SA (Lackland Air Base). We also want to starta program to monitor and report migrating birds killed or injured by collision withdowntown San Antonio buildings. This program will provide data to encouragebuilding managers and city decision makers to encourage/require appropriatelighting, glass, and other structural components that do not attract or confusemigrating birds, often to their detriment.

But we can’t do this without help. We need YOU—BAS members and others whoappreciate birds—to come out and lend a hand: help us spread the “bird word” to ourcommunity; help us attract new members; help us speak out on behalf of birdconservation; help us staff key committees (Programs, Community Outreach,Conservation, and Conservation & Advocacy).

Just let us know what you are passionateabout and would love to do on behalf ofbirds, and we will help you go to work withour support. And of course we alwaysappreciate your donations to fund ouractivities.
