Dear East Naples Civic Association Membership, Happy New Year!!! I am honored to write to you as your new incoming 2016 East Naples Civic Association president. I was first introduced to ENCA 11 years ago by Bob Murray (a past president of ENCA). At our breakfast meeting Bob told me that if I was planning to do business in East Naples that it would be a great idea to become a member of the ENCA due to the major involvement ENCA has to all that is East Naples and beyond. Well Bob was right and I am proud to have been a member since that meeting 11 years ago.

The East Naples Civic Association is a terrific long-standing and well respected civic organization who truly has the best interest of East Naples residents and business at the forefront of our mission. We should all be proud to be a member.

East Naples has started to really take shape and is not the East Naples of old. People are moving here by the hundreds and business are expanding and opening all over East Naples. We have our own hospital, State college, municipal airport, regional library, shopping & dining options and much more. The positive press about East Naples is abundant and with the help of ENCA we look for foster and enhance that positivity into the future.

WAWA Coming to East NaplesAt our November board meeting, the Dan Hughes Development Group presented their development plans for the 6.5 acre Price Street/US41 Wawa project, across from Outback. The project consists of three parcels, (1) C-4 already purchased, plus (1) C-3 and (1) Residential/Agricultural, both under contract, which they are looking to rezone. The proposed access to the property is off US41 and Price St. They are also seeking a variance for an increased landscape buffer in lieu of a wall on the west/south side of the property, at neighbor’s request. Their challenge to create bigger buffers with the purchase of the Residential/Agricultural property, is working with the county to get PUD (Planned Unit Development) with all 3 parcels zoned C-3.

Wawa plans to have 8 fueling stations with 16 pumps double-stacked. Also proposed in the PUD are three retail stores (on present C-3 piece) with 2400SF, 1700SF, and 3000SF spaces along with a 20,000SF on Residential/Agricultural piece. Wawa plans to create 30-40 jobs, 7-8 full-time, with the remainder part-time. Wawa is family owned in 6 states with plans for 70 opening in Florida.

Shadowlawn Elementary, 21 Spices and Lucky’s MarketHats are off to the Marco Island Kiwanis Club for recognizing a tremendous need at Shadowlawn School and responding to it. They have reached deep into the poorest of poor – Shadowlawn Elementary School near Bayshore Drive. This school is at 95% poverty rate, and they are always in need of books for the children to read. Windstar Country Club just recently bought them 25 I-Pads which they share amongst classrooms. What a wonderful gesture on their part! The

Kiwanians’ main focus is to help children, and when they are children of very little means, the Kiwanians really shine. Recently, the President, Kathleen Reynolds, Joe Swaja and yours truly, visited Shadowlawn School with a check for $1,500 for books or anything they are truly in need of – but focusing on books. The joy on the faces of the teachers and children said it all. When we saw the real need for books in the library, we knew we were making a difference in that school. SO – when the Marco Kiwanis Club holds their Car Show on February 14th, please come, enjoy a great day, eat a lot of hot dogs, Hamburg’s, popcorn, soda’s and even donate in a donation jar or buy a roll of 50-50 tickets. Every dime you spend goes to helping the children in our community and the surrounding community. A grand opening was held to announce a marvelous fine dining restaurant to the East Naples area, located in the shopping center near the entrance to Sugden Park, 4270 Tamiami Trail E. “21 Spices by Chef Asif” opened Dec. 21st for lunch and dinner, and is located in the space previously occupied by Café Luna. You would never recognize the restaurant now! They have completely redecorated and upgraded the restaurant to bring it to a new stature and ambience. The lighting is magnificent; the walls have been transformed with a flair from India, the lighting fixtures are unique and reflect the culture from India, the full bar is completely redecorated to have an ambience all its own. The table setting was magnificent, and the seating was plush. Chef Asif has been the head chef for the Marco Island Hilton Hotel for 15 years, and the General Manager of the Hilton, Mac Chaudrhy, was at the Grand Opening to show his support and enthusiasm for this new restaurant. Also present was Phil McCabe, the original builder and owner of the shopping center, who came to cheer them on. Everyone exclaimed over the quality of the food. People from Marco Island to North Naples, who attended the Grand Opening, were elegantly dressed and extremely supportive. The two page menu was extensive and included Lobster Mulligatawny Soup and Marg Dhania Soup, many appetizers including Mazedaar Samosa, Ghehra Paani Diver Scallops, Hara Vegetarian Kehab, Elegant Murgh Lollipop, and so much more; four types of salad, and the entrees included Lamb Rogan Josh, Sikandari Lamb Shanks, Harris Farms’ New York Strip, Chicken Jikka Masala (England’s National Dish), Spice Kadai Chidken, Saffron Chicken Khorma, Jhinga Prawns, Kucknowi Grouper, Sweet Jamarind Seabass, Grilled Pacific Salmon, Maine Lobster Masala, Amritsari Snapper, Saffron Chicken Khorma, Madras (free range) Chicken; Delicacies from the Jandoor (clay oven) included 21 Spices Lamb

East Naples

Chops, Citrus Quail, Beef Sheek Kabob and so much more! The desserts included Gold Leaf Shahi Jukda, Gulab Jamun (Indian Donuts), Saffron Ginger Kulfi (Indian Ice Cream), and the extensive list goes on and on. And, oh by the way, the service was excellent! The prices reflect the quality of food and dining. Many people over time have asked where you could find good Indian food. Well now there is a restaurant just for you! You won’t want to miss dining here! New to the area is the Island Hoppers Air Tours and Charters. New Service begins on January 15th, 2016 to Key West, with flights running 3 days a week, Monday-Friday-Sunday, from Marco Island, Sarasota/Bradenton, and Punta Gorda/Ft. Myers. Fares start at $129.00 one way, plus tax. The airline is taking reservations now by calling Raven Air/Island Hoppers – 239-777-4046 or 239-393-0020. The Marco Island/Naples flights will take off from the Marco Island Executive Airport on Mainsail Drive. A representative from World Fuel Services happened to be in the area recently and had some very nice comments about the Marco Airport staff professionalism and energetic atmosphere at the airport itself. This little airport continues to exceed! Lucky’s Market, a natural and organic food market with pricing that we can afford, will be opening its door within the month of January in the Naples Towne Centre Shopping Center on U. S. 41 E, just a few doors down from the Towne Centre Movie Theater. This is a new and exciting concept that we should all enjoy and support. They will be announcing their Grand Opening shortly. Watch the newspapers for the actual date of opening.
