Dear Fellow Metalsmiths...

First-off let me begin this message by saying thank you toall of you who are being diligent about our social distancingand the sacrifices we make everyday that protect thecollective us. Restaurants, Movies, Hair cuts, roller-rink-skating, Wine-Tasting, Disneyland, Weddings, Birthdays,and Travel have all had to be put on hold for what isstarting to seem like forever.

Believe me when I say that I can’t wait to get back to some semblance of anormal routine, but I am unwilling to reclaim many of what I would consider mynormal “freedoms” because doing so could still put myself and others in danger.I’d like to take this opportunity to remind you that now is not the time to letdown our guard. We all need to stay safe and Covid-free, if possible. Keeping all of this in mind MASSC has been working on ways to enrich your livesfrom afar. We have been trying to get some online events going for ourmembers, things that are designed to reconnect us as a group.

On May 8thOn May 8th Erin Proctor held an online demonstration with her Really CoolEngraving Machine. On May 16thOn May 16th I hosted a Follow-Along-Live Stay@HomeWorkshop on some Wavy Wire Earrings that I made. Scroll down for a summaryon both of those events.

Massc is paying $50 for each live online demonstrations over 30 minutes for the

year 2020.

We kicked off the first of(hopefully) many virtual eventswith a demonstration my U-MARQ GemFx5 engravingmachine, which is a computeraided table-top system thatworks sort of like a miniaturemilling machine.

Over the course of the hour, Itook questions and lead thegroup through the process ofcreating a suitable image,formatting, positioning, andediting it within the built-insoftware, and then we allwatched as the machine did itsengraving magic and made quickwork ....

On May 16th I had the pleasureof attempting to host Massc'sfirst ever online workshop thatmembers could follow-alongwith. We had about 60 peopletuned in, some attempting tofollow along and make Wavy WireHoop Earrings, some just towatch.

The demo took about 2 hourstotal, with our tech glitches andwhatnot. But not after long wewere all rolling or hammering ourwavy wire into hoops!Above are pieces made with thetechnique sent in by Lori Hooks(upper) and Joe McFaul (lower).
