Presidents ReportHappy Easter to everyone!

We hope this year’s Vintage is progressing well albeit a lot slower than recent years.

Significant changes are forecasted in Australia’s economic outlook, Griffith Business Chamber believe there is a need for Griffith City Council to re-evaluate and restructure The Economic Development and Tourism department from the bottom up to increase Griffith’s economic position.

With the challenges that lay ahead of us, we are concerned as to how Griffith City Council will be able to implement this profound planned growth under the current employment structure.

If a restructure was to occur, it will ensure the implementation process of the Strategic Plan will be delegated to the right personnel and KPI’s will be met in a more timely manner.

Griffith Business Chamber are suggesting the following for Council’s consideration;

A separate Not for Profit Griffith Economic Board be established as a Chamber/Council partnership with a Private Major Sponsor.

To emulate The Toowoomba and Surat Basin Enterprise (TSBE).

Toowoomba like Griffith are experiencing a major lift in investment driven by Agribusiness & Toowoomba has proven that a separate not for Profit Economic Board is functioning very well.

Griffith Business Chamber suggest the following restructured position under Griffith City Council;

•A separate Council position for a Senior Events & Tourism Officer

Under the proposed Griffith Economic Board, Griffith Business Chamber suggests the following positions to be created;

•A qualified and a dedicated lobbyist/grants/submissions officer with proven experience

•A separate position for a Marketing Officer

•That all fall under a more senior position as Economic Development Manager.

The KPI’s for this position should be clearly linked to the Community Strategic Plan.

The person for this role should have a proven track record and have a minimum of 10 years’ experience in business development, state and local government knowledge. They must understand water and agriculture and its intrinsic link to the drive of the Griffith economy.

Our Future is Local

OUR VISIONTo support, generate & facilitate the growth of a strong

COMPUTER ERROR LEFT UNCHECKED FOR 8 YEARS RESULTS IN 25 FACTORY WORKERS BEING UNDERPAID $45,000

11 current and 14 former factory workers at Nambucca Heads were inadvertently underpaid their leave entitle-ments for eight years. The male workers, aged between 20 and 60, were short-changed $45,000 between 2007 and 2015.

A Fair Work Ombudsman investigation found that the business had set up its wages system incorrectly, resulting in ongoing miscalculations of leave accruals, leave loading and superannuation entitlements.

The mistake only came to light after the wife of one of the workers contacted the Fair Work Ombudsman for advice after tiring of listening to her husband’s grievances.

The system error failed to calculate almost 1100 hours of annual leave and about 1300 hours of sick leave.

One current employee was short-changed almost a year’s worth of annual leave entitlements.After being contacted by Fair Work inspectors, the employer promptly rectified the issue.

Fair Work Ombudsman Natalie James says the matter illustrates what can happen when a wages system isn’t in-stalled and programmed correctly in the first instance.

“A mistake made eight years ago has now resulted in this business having to find $45,000 that it had not budgeted for,” she said.

Make sure you’re doing the right thing by your employees, because a small miscalculation regarding the amount your employees receive can be a huge expense to your business when you have to make up for it.
