APASSIONATA “Companions of Light”: Successful with a new creative team

The new APASSIONATA tour “Companions of Light” is a reason to celebrate for all fans: After the successful start in October the show elicits roaring applause and standing ovations from the audience at each venue. With wonderful sceneries and a grandiose staging, the new program is described by the audience as the best in years. Europe’s most popular family entertainment show with horses will be appearing in various major European cities until June 2018, and with the number of visitors and ticket pre-sales already achieved, it will become a figure-head of the current entertainment season. Thanks to the loyal and enthusiastic audience and the unique produc-tion of the show highlight, “Companions of the Light” can already celebrate incomparable successes.

With “Companions of Light” the beautiful symbiosis of equestrianism, creativity and artistic aspirations now en-ters another round with a new creative team on board. The creative director Klaus Hillebrecht, costume designer Kristina Weiß and lighting designer Rüdiger Benz do not only continue the successes, but the production is once again raised to a new level. With a sweeping show soundtrack, elaborately designed costumes and perfectly matched light compositions, the spectators become part of an unforgettable experience.

“I would like to develop the show as a director and composer and find new possibilities with which this suc-cessful format continues to reach as many or even more viewers,” explains Klaus Hillebrecht his personal goal. “Through new stage techniques and light concepts as well as emotional musical arrangements, I want to stage the riding highlights and the special passion between man and horse even more,” adds the Emmy-nominated composer.

The inspiring story is to touch the hearts of the audience and amaze it in the best APASSIONATA-way. An old woman’s memories of the incredible events of her youth give the show its scope: As a young girl Alana is chosen to find people with glowing hearts - the Companions of Light - all over the world and in different eras to keep the earth from cold and eternal darkness. The pictorial scenes in “Companions of Light” are accompanied by the most beautiful horses of Europe which impersonate the different historical cultures and bring them to life.

“APASSIONATA for me is a mutual journey of all the actors with the spectators and the entire team, who guar-antee the show’s success so professionally, with heart and commitment before, during and after each perfor-mance”, says creative director Klaus Hillebrecht. “I am proud to be part of this family!”

Join us to celebrate the new tour of APASSIONATA between October 2017 and June 2018 - the “Companions of Light” are waiting for you!

Equipe Luis Valença Excellent performances in matchless precision: The team of the former riding champion Luis Valença from Portugal stands for Baroque riding skill at the highest level. The honorary member of the Portuguese School of Equestrian Art has dedicated his life to training Lusitano horses and exceptional riding talents. In “Companions of Light” his young equipe gives an accomplished performance, incorporating all facets of classical dressage with its noble stallions. Whether with a rider or led by hand, the horses perform exercises such as the levade, the courbette and even the difficult capriole to perfection.

Equipe Bartolo Messina

Bartolo Messina inherited both his father’s passion and his special touch when it comes to horses. This is why in “Companions of Light” the Italian presents two small herds of horses performing freely, only guided by their bond of friendship and trust. First he charms the audi-ence with cute mini ponies and two tinker horses in an uplifting liberty dressage, then he touches its heart by demonstrating the deep bond with his two big horses. He also surprises with a funny donkey comedy. With his acts he intends to show that horses of all breeds and donkeys – whether they are small or big, elegant or rather stout – are able to give spectacular performances. So there are three real highlights for the audience coming by this team!

Sylvie Willms Sylvie Willms grew up with the passion for horses from day one, since her family has been dedicated to the noble four-legged animals for more than 300 years. Although she was already sitting on a horse before she could even walk, Sylvie lost her heart to the liberty dressage as a child already. Wether on stage or at home - she likes to be surrounded by lots of animals: in „Companions of Light“, she lets 14 horses of different breeds perform incredible exercises ... guided only by her voice and her body language. The audience will be thrilled to witness this close bond reflecting the trust that can develop between humans and animals.

Equipe Sebastián FernándezSebastián Fernández, the multiple-time Spanish champion in “Doma Vaquera”, the traditional riding style of the shepherds, and his family are crazy about horses. In “Companions of Light” he and his son present the audience with their skilful handling of the “garrocha”, a wooden pole of around three metres length that once served the purpose of guiding and steering cows and bulls. Sebastián Fernández jr. also impresses as a mystical desert rider who accompanies Alana on her adventurous jour-ney. The talented family is truely a guarantee for sensational tension and equestrian achievements.

Hasta Luego Academy Athletic, bold, breathtaking and at a tearing pace: This best describes the Hungarian Post of Hasta Luego Academy the audience witnesses in APASSIONATA’s “Companions of Light” in gloomy China. During the act the rider stands on the backs of two extraordinary Lusitano horses that will draw a lot of attention simply due to their appearance. They are Cremello stallions with an almost golden coat and exceptional blue eyes. In front of these two beauties, four more horses are being led. In addition, the team impresses with a variation of “working equitation” in which riders and horses complete complex tasks, strengthening both the trust and cooperation between humans and animals.

Voltigeurs du Monde

The Hasta Luego Academy also hosts an elite team of the best trick riders in Europe that is continually enhanced by new riders. This is why the equipe, which was created especially for APASSIONATA, succeeds in captivating its audience with constantly new and bold tricks on, above and below the horses. The team is trained by Erik Hasta Luego, the French trick riding champion since 1978, who is listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the fastest rider to circle beneath the belly of a galloping horse in only 12 seconds. He passes on his skills to the young riders of the Hasta Luego Academy in Nîmes in the South of France.

Filipe Fernandes Farias Banha Dressage lessons as presented in the textbook by the Portuguese Filipe Fernandes Farias Banha. Trained in the stable of the old master Luis Valença, he specialized in classical dressage and is successful in the tour-nament sport. He shows the riding talent in a grandiose solo and proves how athletical and graceful perfectly ridden lessons look. Whether piaffe, passage, pirouette or traversal: Filipe and his his four-legged partner master all these advanced exercises with ease and offer the spectators perfect equestrian harmony at the highest level.

Jörg Pasternak

In the wild west between American Indians and cowboys, of course, a sheriff can’t be missing to grasp the fleeing prisoner: With his quarter horse “Dirty Harry” Jörg Pasternak impresses in the Western discipline called Cutting. Traditionally, it‘s about keeping cattle together and catch-ing runaway animals and driving them back. In “Companions of Light” the agile four-legged friend and his rider have to chase some Indians ... but will that work out well? Impressive are the fast and perfect move-ments of the Western team and a real eye-catcher for the audience!

Franceso Nobile A mixture of circensic and dressage lessons is the hobby as well as the passion of Francesco Nobile. The Italian and his Friesian horse “Goliath“ present not only high-profile cavalry, but also combine these with small tricks: His black four-legged friend shows a beautiful passage, while Francesco is sitting on him - juggling backwards. Also the jump rope is no problem for the two! For the Sicilian, this is his first big appearance on a show, because so far he has been training “Goliath“ just for fun ... while his program is an absolute highlight in “Companions of Light“!

Live Artists In “Companions of Light” three very special protagonists shine in addi-tion to riders and horses: Kun Jing impresses as a forest queen in China, who hovers and sings in her opulent dress far above the riding track to a haunting and specially composed melody - live and in eight meters height. It is particularly spirited when flamenco dancer Carmen Villena moves with passion and emotion to the Spanish guitar sounds of Rubén de Rosario and almost seems to challenge Sebastián Fernandez on horse-back. Here are three unforgettable show highlights.

APASSIONATA Dance Company

The dancing team unites the energy of different dance styles all over the world. Precisely tuned to the movements of the horses, magical moments are staged by the talented dancers of the APASSIONATA Dance Company - sometimes full of dynamical wildness and athleticism, then again with a dreamlike poetic elegance. The comedic inserts comple-ment the dancers with a lot of acting skill, wit and charm. Various styles - classic and modern - merge, in interaction with the riders, to impressive scenes ... including goosebumps factor!

Horse Breeds

ArabSwift as an arrow, enduring and loyal: These are the traits attributed to Arab horses. This very old breed is known as the most noble horse breed in the world. Arab horses have been the preferred riding animals of the desert dwellers for many centuries – the pride and joy of Sheiks and Bed-ouins. It was them who brought the animals, their “sons of the desert”, to Arabia 1,500 years ago. They admired these horses so much that they fed them by hand and let them sleep in their tents. This is why Arab hors-es developed many remarkably positive qualities: they are good-natured, forbearing, devoted and have an exquisite character. What is more, they are unbelievably intelligent, resilient and frugal, and they move with ease, grace and ground-covering gaits.

Arab horses are very talented and they like to be kept busy. Their deli-cate yet compact physique makes them not only ideal race horses, but focused and loyal partners in liberty dressage.

AztecaAzteca horses are a relatively young breed that emerged in Mexico in the 1970s. The breed originates from the Southern American Criollo that descends from the horses that were introduced into the country by the Spanish conquerors and evolved from natural selection in the rough Pampas climate.

This resilient horse breed was then crossed with the Northern Amer-ican Quarter Horse and the Andalusian horse – the Azteca breed was born. This fast and elegant horse was particularly suited for working on the haciendas. Thanks to its long, ground-covering and especially fast movements, the Azteca is a perfect riding, carriage and jumping horse. Mexico’s “national horse” with its excellent cattle driving skills is not only sure-footed and agile, but also very reliable.

Combined with their well-balanced temper, all of these traits make the Azteca horses perfect partners for trick riding – which they are once more demonstrating in this year’s APASSIONATA show.

DonkeyDonkeys like to be close to humans, and have been their loyal compan-ions for millennia. These special representatives of the horse family are very intelligent and empathetic. The distinguishing characteristics of don-keys include their very loud braying – which allows them to communicate with their fellow donkeys across distances of up to three kilometres – and their large ears. Donkeys are considerably more cautious and head-strong than horses, which has given them the reputation of being lazy. Yet once you have gained their trust, they show great motivation and willingness to learn. In “Companions of Light” donkey Nico and the team Bartolo Messina show that even a long ear can be a great freedom artist with comedic talent.

FriesianFriesian horses, also known as the “black pearls of Friesland”, have a long-standing history. They were first mentioned in the times of Ancient Rome and have since evolved into a popular European breed. The dis-tinctive type known today emerged in the 16th century, when they were crossbred with Iberian horses. The fascination with the Friesian horse is in part owed to its beautiful, mystical appearance straight from a fairy tale with its long, lush mane and its similarly striking feathering. Thanks to its Spanish heritage, this breed, which was often used for work on the fields, performs bold and expressive gaits, which makes it predestined for dressage. Whether for classical or circensic dressage, these intelligent and sensitive black giants are all-round talents and often used as show acts because of their impressive appearance. Of course, APASSIONATA is thrilled to have these Dutch show stars perform in the arena, because there aren’t many horses this majestic!

Horse Breeds

KWPN (Dutch Warmblood)The KWPN (Koninklijk Warmbloed Paard Nederland) is a warmblood origi-nating from the Netherlands. It is one of the world’s youngest horse breeds, with its first successful breeding in the mid-twentieth century. These beau-tiful and athletic horses are a cross of the Dutch Groningen and Gelderland horses, with a little thoroughbred blood mixed in. Dutch warmbloods are incredibly talented at dressage and other riding disciplines. Thanks to “Totilas”, probably the most famous KWPN and one of the best professional dressage horses of all times, this breed has gained a lot of atten-tion in recent years. The horses are eager to learn, they are motivated and enjoy training and being taught new exercises. Their friendly nature makes them reliable riding partners. Also, Dutch Warmbloods are known to be very bold, buoyant, strong-willed, yet sensitive. This year, APASSIONATA’s “Com-panions of light” will have a beautiful black KWPN present his exceptional talent for dressage – performing in perfect liberty and without a rider!

LusitanoLusitano horses are close relatives of the Andalusian horse. However, the breeding business in Portugal developed very differently than in Spain and their independent stud book was not introduced until 1942. Due to its com-pact and brawny build, the Iberian horse breed is perfectly suited for dres-sage, even the classical discipline. The Lusitano’s expressive, noble head with its big eyes is set on an optimally curved neck that emerges from muscular shoulders. Lusitano horses are characterised by their courage, their great strength of nerve and their reliability. They are very eager to work and fast learners. Their brisk temper is easily balanced out by their sensitive nature. More than other horse breeds, the Lusitano is quick to bond with humans and has a close relationship with its owner – a lifelong friendship. The hors-es’ temper and willingness to learn make them predestined for various tasks, for example cattle herding.

APASSIONATA’s audience is in for a special treat by these Portuguese horses, by the Equipe Valença and their exceptional talent for dressage.

Horse Breeds

Miniature shetland ponyAmong all of the breeds, Shetland ponies are known as the “ants among horses”. They originate from the Shetlands, a group of islands belonging to Scotland. Due to the rough weathers on the islands, they have evolved into very resilient and sturdy ponies. These little all-rounders are considered to be one of the most powerful horse breeds, even capable of pulling twice their own weight.

Shetland ponies are very sociable and eager to learn, they are diligent and frugal. These powerhouses even worked underground as so-called pit ponies in coal mining, and they were sought after as packhorses or carthorses. Later they also became popular for children to ride on. Just like donkeys, “shetties” are known to have a stubborn streak. However, they are much more sociable than people think! With a little patience, these little strongheaded creatures turn out to be really loving and trainable companions that are very smart when it comes to learning new tricks, and who enjoy showing off their skills.

Just like their big siblings in the horse family, they are able to learn the most difficult exercises in classical dressage, with many surprises in store. The audience won’t believe their eyes seeing these cute dwarfs demon-strate their abilities in the APASSIONATA arena.

In the Show: Liberty dressage – Equipe Bartolo Messina

Menorquin HorseThe fascination of these highly spirited and intelligent horses lies in their energetic and rhythmical gaits. They are particularly skilled in running on their hindquarters. Originating from the Balearic island of Minorca, this fiery Spanish breed is at the heart of the traditional, cen-turies-old „Fiestas de Menorca“. As the leading stars of this traditional celebration, the Menorquins‘ performances are accompanied by music and the wild applause of the rapturous audience. These enthusiastic and energetic Spanish horses almost appear to float during their dres-sage acts in the new APASSIONATA show „Companions of Light“. You can look forward to seeing these horses which have dancing in their blood!

Pura Raza Española (P.R.E.)The Iberian Pura Raza Española (P.R.E.) is a very noble breed. These horses are one of the oldest European breeds with a long-standing, pure pedigree, and the Spanish riders’ pride and joy. Due to their ver-satility and good nature, P.R.E. horses are excellently suited for classical dressage. They are extremely intelligent and reliable and have a very good memory. This makes it possible to train them in a short amount of time, however it also requires particular care. Riders appreciate their passionate but even temper. P.R.E.s are known for their harmonious appearance that is similar to the Andalusian horse. They have a very elegant head, a thick mane and triangularly shaped eyes.

Thanks to their magnificent coat and their gentle and sleek gaits, these Spaniards are proud and beautiful creatures. What is more, they are very eager to learn, obedient and pleasant-natured – the perfect con-dition for a real highlight of the APASSIONATA show, the skilful art of Doma Vaquera, the traditional riding style of the Spanish cattle herders.

Quarter HorseThe quarter horse brings together the best characteristics of various horse breeds: when they conquered the North American continent, America‘s adventurers and settlers imported not only the European way of life, but also its horses. On the US continent‘s then unmapped prairies, the typical quarter horses were bred from Iberian horses and old North European breeds. An ancestor of the English thoroughbred is also believed to have contributed its DNA to these first American horses. The robust, versatile quarter horse combines endurance, power and agility, and today represents the most common of all horse breeds. These short-distance sprinters are named after the „quarter mile ra-ces“, a popular type of race. These fast-learning horses are particularly brilliant in Western acts, and impress APASSIONATA audiences with their unique skills.

TinkerTinker horses, also known as Irish Cobs, originate from Ireland and Great Britain. In Germany the horses – that often come with a pie-bald coat – were not recognised as an independent breed until 2005. Since they have a sturdy build and an enduring character similar to coldbloods, in the past, they were frequently used as carthorses for longer journeys. Tinker horses also have traits often found in ponies and warmbloods. This makes them especially popular and suitable for various disciplines. Soon these once rather unremarkable work horses developed into sought-after sport and leisure-time horses. Thanks to their even temper, they do not get worked up easily and they are loyal companions for many riders. Once you win a Tinker’s heart, this horse will be loyal for life. They are a very special breed not only because of their great intelligence and eagerness to work.

The close bond and the great trust between the Italian rider Bartolo Messina and his two Tinker horses clearly shows in their liberty dres-sage act in “Companions of Light”.

Welshpony

A pony breed hugely popular in Europe puts in a great performance in the show „Companions of Light“: As part of the herd of Sylvie Willms, a Welsh pony conquers the arena and completes the heart-warming liberty dressage act. Bred in Wales, these ponies are friendly and brave. Thanks to their intelligence and energy, these little horses – often described as „miniature Arabian horses“ – are suited not only to leisure riding but also to sophisticated dressage acts, something they perform with their own unique playfulness. They are also very drawn to humans and can form a deep bond with „their“ person. These little all-rounders are enchanting characters, and thus also very welcome additions to APASSIONATA.

The name APASSIONATA is synonymous with intricate choreography, pulsating music, beautiful stage design and of course impressive horse dressage performances. But what also sets APASSIONATA apart is the affection shared between humans and horses, which in turn goes a long way towards creating perfect harmony between them. The APASSIONATA horses are not only undisputed favourites among the audience, they are also the absolute focus for our riders and supervisors. That is why their wellbeing comes before everything else, both during the show and away from it!

It goes without saying that travel times should be kept as short as possible. That is why the horses are not taken from one show city to the next, but instead stay in central stables in the heart of Germany. One of the stables belongs to Petra Geschonneck, leader of the frisean team.

Expansive meadows and forested surroundings are just a stone’s throw or indeed a few gallops away. The landscape and fantastic facilities, not to mention the solarium, not only benefit the German Frisians, but also the other APASSIONATA horses, whose home stables are sometimes thousands of kilometres away. The complex operates as their “temporary stables” from November to May for the periods between show weekends. Guests include Bartolo Messina from Italy with his liberty dressage horses and ponies as well as Equipe Giona from Italy and Daphne de Visser from the Netherlands.

The horses spend their free time here in this spacious riding centre during the week: grazing in the paddocks, taking idyllic rides and undergoing light, tailored training. In short, a typical horse’s life! It goes without saying that the riders like to keep an eye on their horses, ensuring that they are happy and comfortable in the stables at all times.

Petras stable acts as the central hub for the touring show between trips to its individual tour cities. This setup allows the animals ample relaxati-on time during the week, with rides through the surrounding landscape, and transport being kept to a minimum. The tranquil atmosphere is also obvious in the show. The horses are relaxed yet motivated both on stage and behind the scenes.

Before the show begins, plenty of intensive work has already gone on behind the scenes – it takes over a year from the initial idea to making it reality. The cre-ative team takes the basic idea and developes it into a specific story. The individual teams then begin their work. From the music, lighting, costumes and dance through to the stage design and the choreography of the horses, everything must come together to form a harmonious whole.

For the riders and actors who come from many diffe-rent countries, bringing together the different ele-ments is a great challenge, even when they have spent all summer training and meticulously rehearsing. With patience and daily rehearsals, the horses and riders learn the new scenes two weeks before the première, scenes which the audience can then see in the com-pleted show.

Yet there is also lots to be done in every city the APASSIONATA tour visits. Ahead of each weekend, a 30-person crew spends several hours turning the venue into a show stage. They lay 1,500 m² of riding mats for the arena, which is then covered by over 100 tons of sand. To achieve the right lighting and sound effects, over 100 moving lights and numerous spea-kers are set up. To ensure that everything is properly supplied with electricity, technicians lay almost 9 km of cable.

Alongside projectors, screens and several fog machi-nes, the luggage includes numerous props and, of course, the costumes of the four-legged and two-leg-ged stars. All of this is transported from city to city in seven large trucks. Because all this is impossible to manage with muscle power alone, the crew brings along several bucket loaders, tractors and forklift trucks.

Because the 50 or so show horses also need accom-modation in every show city, two large stable tents are erected in the immediate vicinity of the respec-tive show venue. Equine Manager Brigitte Munkert places great emphasis on always occupying the stalls in the same order – horses are creatures of habit and feel happier if the horse in the neighbouring stall is the same one as last week.

For the horse‘s nourishment, 1,000 kg of horse mu-esli and oats as well as 70 bales of straw and hay are delivered to each city. It‘s no surprise, then, that the riders have to clear out up to 60m³ of horse manure each week. The final performance is barely over in the show city before everything is taken down, loa-ded onto the trucks and sent on its way to the next city within 10 hours.
