2014 Diagonale: The Program

Diagonale Opening at Helmut List Halle © Diagonale/Pelekanos

About the Festival The Diagonale is conceived as a forum for Austrian cinematic production as well as a place for a nuanced, multifaceted and critical exploration. The personal encounters with filmmakers and their work, and the productive encounters of various filmic forms are central to the festival, which, by means of a tailored program selection, offers the opportunity to become acquainted with Austrian film in all its diversity, to trace current artistic trends and, not least, to make some (re-)discoveries along the way. Since 1998, the Diagonale has made the city of Graz the film capital of Austria and established it as a hub of the film industry and its audience. Approximately 1,300 accredited industry professionals and 25,000 visitors, including a large number of young filmgoers, gather in the Styrian capital to enjoy the wide-ranging program features, the unique festival atmosphere, as well as the talks with attending filmmakers and special guests. The environmental sustainability initiative of the festival, known as DIAGONALE GOES GREEN, aims to offer an ecological and social contribution so that environmental awareness and cinematic pleasure go hand in hand.

Program Structure

Drawing annually on more than 500 submissions, the 2014 Diagonale presents a Competition Program with a selection of 106 films and documentaries, as well as short films, animations, experimental works and videos. Many of these productions have their world premiere, or their first showing in Austria. In addition to this current selection, the Year’s Retrospective will show all feature-length Austrian films and documentaries that enjoyed regular cinematic releases during the last year. The Special Programs expand on this perspective, illustrate the range of Austrian film production and offer an exploration of its heritage. The highlights of the Diagonale include a Historical Program and a Spotlight Feature , which showcases the work of a particular Austrian filmmaker (up to now: Mara Mattuschka, Peter Schreiner, Peter Tscherkassky, Ferry Radax, Josef Dabernig, Michaela Grill). In the spirit of transcending cultural frontiers, each year a Tribute is made to an international filmmaker who is invited to present a selection of his/her work at the festival (up to now: Stefan Krohmer & Daniel Nocke, Romuald Karmakar, Elfi Mikesch, Avi Mograbi, Dominik Graf). In addition, the festival offers a comprehensive Support and Mediation Program , consisting of a Film Industry Meeting , talks and debates on cultural and political topics, as well as exhibitions and workshops. And when it comes to celebrating Austrian cinema, the festival never falls short. There are plenty of occasions to enjoy, including the Opening Gala , the presentation of awards for performance and screenplays, numerous receptions and the Nightline, where stimulating festival days are celebrated late into the night. In the Award Ceremony , the festival is brought to a close with Austria’s most prestigious film distinctions, including the main prize for Best Austrian Feature and Best Austrian Documentary Film, each offering 21,000 Euros in prize money. Festival director Barbara Pichler

“The Diagonale program reflects current Austrian filmmaking, which is an illustration of compelling diversity and quality. Every film examines cinema and its narrative style, offering an individual look into the world. The goal of Diagonale is to create a dynamic link between films and their audience, and an open, and hopefully, continually surprising discourse.”

Press comments

”Everyone who comes loves it – not least for the perfect balance between novelties, networking opportunities, partying and a thorough concern for film history. The Diagonale has opened up and energetically developed into an international event with yet a highly reflexive potential.” Senses of Cinema (Melbourne) “Ostensibly a public festival, Diagonale is still the primary meeting place for those who work with and mediate the art of film in Austria.” The Auteurs/MUBI (Palo Alto)

*Spectrum

Austrian film production does not simply end at the national borders. The films on show as part of Spectrum include those productions from last year that were not created by Austrian directors, but had less than fifty percent Austrian capital. These specially selected films are not being shown in the competition, however they represent a strong sector of Austrian film production and are therefore at the centre of the festival programme.

Spotlight Feature: Manfred Neuwirth In collaboration with Radio Ö1

Manfred Neuwirth © Dönckie Emchi/lloop media

The 2014 Diagonale dedicates its spotlight feature to a versatile Austrian cinematic artist. Manfred Neuwirth , a founding member of the Medienwerkstatt Wien and awarded an honorary prize for the cinematic arts in 2003, is an innovative trailblazer in documentaries, avant-garde films and new media. He describes himself as a “collector of images”, shooting material and recording sound that he employs as a kind of mnemonic device. His interests lie in the elements of day-to-day life, in the supposedly unspectacular, the sensory components of the medium. His images are characterized by an accuracy of perception, which in its cohesion is free of sentimentality or preconception. The Diagonale presents a comprehensive selection of Manfred Neuwirth’s work from the 1970s to the present. In addition, there will be a workshop discussion concerning his current project Territorium, the presentation of a publication on Neuwirth’s complete body of work and the installation scapes and elements at the esc medien und kunst labor.

Diagonale 2014 presents Vom Leben Lieben Sterben – Erfahrungen mit AIDS. 20 Jahre später (with Walter Hiller, 2013) Tibet Revisited (2005) magic hour (1999) manga train (1998) Lembranças Brasileiras (1994) The End of the Gang of Four (1993) Vom Leben Lieben Sterben – Erfahrungen mit AIDS (with Walter Hiller, 1993) Tibetische Erinnerungen (1988–1995) Erinnerungen an ein verlorenes Land (1988) Experten (1986) WOSSEA MTOTOM – Die Wiese ist grün im Garten von Wiltz (1983/84) Wiltz (with Gustav Deutsch und Gerda Lampalzer, 1983/84) Volks stöhnende Knochenschau: Schwul sein kann schön sein (HOSI Wien, 1980) Volks stöhnende Knochenschau: Ungustl Atom (Bewegung 5. November, 1980) Schabauer (1973)

Tribute: Agnès Godard

Agnès Godard © Private

Agnès Godard is one of the most illustrious cinematographers of contemporary film. Since 1987, she has been working on countless projects, which include collaborations with Agnès Varda, André Téchiné, Wim Wenders, Ursula Meier, Sébastien Lifshitz, and especially Claire Denis, with whom she has had a two-decade long working relationship.

“If one feels cornered by a camera shot, it means that shot isn’t working,” says Godard. She developed an unmistakable style that thrives on a naturalistic, unadorned beauty, sensual gestures, a feel for movement and rhythm, and an interest in human bodies and faces. The Diagonale Retrospective, the first dedication of its kind in Europe, presents a selection of films from across the spectrum of Godard’s work and has invited the artist herself to an in-depth workshop discussion. A notable highlight is the Austrian premiere of Godard’s most recent work Les salauds (directed by Claire Denis).

Diagonale 2014 presents Les salauds (Claire Denis, FR/DE 2013) Home (Ursula Meier, FR/BE/CH 2008) L’intrus (Claire Denis, FR 2004) Wild Side (Sébastien Lifshitz, FR/BE 2004) Beau travail (Claire Denis, FR 1999) La vie rêvée des anges (Erick Zonca, FR 1998)

Special Historical Program: Peter Lorre Presented by SYNEMA

The series of historic films entitled FilmExil , courtesy of the seasoned cooperation with Synema , draws on filmmakers with Austrian roots who were driven out by the National Socialists.

The Face Behind the Mask © Sammlung Österreichisches Filmmuseum

On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the death of the unforgettable actor, screenwriter and director Peter Lorre (born 1904 in Rózsahegy, Austria-Hungary, died 1964 in Los Angeles), the program offers insights into Lorre’s diverse cinematic work – from his beginnings in Berlin to his notable successes in Hollywood. This will include Lorre’s only work as a director, Der Verlorene (1951).

Diagonale 2014 presents M – Eine Stadt sucht einen Mörder (Fritz Lang, DE 1931) The Face Behind the Mask (Robert Florey, US 1941) Arsenic and Old Lace (Frank Capra, US 1941/44) Der Verlorene (Peter Lorre, DE 1951) 49/95 tausendjahrekino (Kurt Kren, AT 1995) – supporting film Curated by: Brigitte Mayr and Michael Omasta

Special Program: 50 Years of the Austrian Film Museum Some other Country – Five Austrian Film Histories A joint program of the Diagonale and the Austrian Film Museum A 2014 collaboration between the Diagonale and the Austrian Film Museum has been organized to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the museum’s founding. The anniversary commemorates the unique and internationally renowned film institution with an array of projects from throughout the year, a considerable portion of which will be shown exclusively at the Diagonale in Graz. Five programs, jointly curated for the first time by the Diagonale and the Film Museum, explore the extensive collection of works with links to Austria, and countless select treasures from the archives – a variety of perspectives that serve to trace a possible history of Austrian film. The programs will include Kino , Nazis , Unser Wien , Der Klang der Sprache des Films and In Transit .

Himmel oder Hölle © Sammlung Österreichisches Filmmuseum

In the course of the show, the local cinematic landscape reveals itself to be not an insular national quest for meaning or identity, but rather a means of transcending boundaries, of forging new technical and aesthetic cinematic perspectives. At the same time, the project questions the role of archives and collections in the context of national cinematic history. Curated by: Alejandro Bachmann, Sebastian Höglinger, Alexander Horwath, Barbara Pichler und Regina Schlagnitweit

Special Program: Austrian Pulp – Part Two Presented by Filmarchiv Austria and Institut Schamlos In collaboration with FM4

Die Schlangengrube und das Pendel © Filmarchiv Austria | Mädchen für die Mambo-Bar © Filmarchiv Austria

Austrian Pulp , part two: Home cooking served up by the Institut Schamlos and the Filmarchiv Austria. From the uncanny hotbed of the preternatural to mambo rhythms in the underworld to gothic pophorror – a homemade pulp film from the last decades, adapted afresh from archival work, which remains virtually concealed from the eye of the spectator. Diagonale 2014 presents Mädchen für die Mambo-Bar (Wolfgang Glück, DE 1959) Dockside bars, hoodlums and fast women on the silver screen: in the late 1950s, this was the non-plus-ultra of infamy, shamelessness and resistance to the stagnancy of Austrian state culture. A juvenile delinquent film, spiced up with plenty of jazz and mambo, long drinks and “funny cigarettes,” dancing close and “endangered women.” It’s wild cinema with a strawberry-vanilla flavor and soap bubbles. Die Schlangengrube und das Pendel (Harald Reinl, DE 1967) This is the first post-war horror film, based on a story by Edgar Allan Poe, studded with screen favorites such as Lex “Old Shatterhand” Barker, Bond girl Karin Dor and horror master Christopher Lee. The film is an exuberantly tragic comic strip ride on a creaking ghost train, full of torture chambers, black-clad horsemen and forests full of corpses and fog banks. It’s vintage horror with a heightened camp factor. Sukkubus – Den Teufel im Leib (Georg Tressler, DE 1989) A trio of lonely herdsman, together with their cattle, prepare for a summer of scarcity in the Alps. In the midst of this male-dominated hierarchy, the “Sennentuntschi,” a figurine made of sticks and straw, is brought to life, and before long the men die one by one. It’s a bizarre declaration of love to the vengeful “Almighty Woman” (or objectified Mother Nature figure) and a dark-humored piece in defiance of the homeland. Curated by: Thomas Ballhausen, Markus Keuschnigg and Paul Poet

Special Program: James Benning In cooperation with Kunsthaus Graz With the exhibition James Benning. Decoding Fear the Kunsthaus Graz continues its involvement with moving images in space. In addition to the exhibition Diagonale shows one of Benning’s key works.

Landscape Suicide © Sammlung Österreichisches Filmmuseum/Wasner Landscape Suicide (1986) brings together various elements of his cinematic way of thinking into a singular form of storytelling. The work lies between film and documentary and defies – as does Benning’s entire body of work – conventional definition. Landscape Suicide is an understated film, yet in its construction it is profoundly impressive. It combines structural cinematic thought with an open form of storytelling, and revolves around the relationship between scenery and violence. In addition, there will be a workshop discussion with James Benning on his work in film and art.

Special Program: Best Austrian Animation 2013 Presented by ASIFA Austria

Die Telefonbuchpolka © Benjamin Swiczinsky | Review © Holger Lang ASIFA Austria, founded in 1985, promotes the interests of animation artists and is involved in numerous activities such as media education, production, research, publication and presentation. Every year, ASIFA Austria organizes the One Day Animation Festival in Vienna. As part of the “Best Austrian Animation 2013” tour, it showcases the films from last year’s award recipients, as well as other local innovative animation films.

Curated by Sabine Groschup and Thomas Renoldner.

Industry Meeting: Digital Revolution meets Reality

March 19 th and 20 th, 2014, Hotel Weitzer

This year’s Industry Meeting focuses on the on-going changes in film distribution and exploitation. Various discussions, case studies and presentations will allow for a practical oriented debate and immersion into more specific issues. While digitalization has radically simplified international film distribution and exploitation, the complexities of the various distribution channels and their legal conditions have increased. It has therefore become essential for filmmakers and producers to keep updated with industry related tendencies and issues of distribution, but also with the synergy of old and new distribution methods. During the two-day Industry Meeting, “Digital Revolution meets Reality,” producers, distributors, sponsors, festival representatives and other experts from the European film industry will evaluate the rapid developments of the past years and sketch out possible future trends. The Industry Meeting focuses as always on a practical oriented analysis through a tangible exchange of experiences with colleagues from here and abroad. Impulse-lectures by renowned experts, European Case Studies and Best Practice methods will introduce different models as well as their specific characteristics and effects on distribution processes. After the official part there will be lots of opportunities for personal conversations between the audience and representatives of the various funding institutions in our established one-on-one meetings. The Industry Meeting, in this sense, blends inspirational material concerning international development, critical reflection and efficient networking opportunities. You can find more information here: www.diagonale.at/branchentreffen-2014. As established in the last few years, a portion of the meetings will be held in English.

This year’s industry meeting is supported by FISA – Location Austria, Television Fund Austria, CREATIVE EUROPE/MEDIA Desk Austria, Canon and ecoversum
