“Creativity has to feed on the greatest diversity of environments possible” Josep Roca

“Now our objective is to generate excitement, and we’re considering dishes inspired by nostalgia, fear, eroticism… our frontiers are much broader and our vision of cooking has transcended established limits, and the more means we

have at our disposal to achieve this, the better” Joan Roca

“We are first and foremost chefs, we feed people, and although we conceptualize more and more each day, we edge closer to

elaborating discourse within a meal. If that is considered art, better still, but it’s not for us to say”

Jordi Roca

“We’ve all come together to create a moment of sheer beauty. We are compelled to achieve the sublime”

Ferran Adrià

“Are we capable of the utmost enjoyment of all the senses? Where is the limit?”

Josep Roca

“Your idea of a culinary opera is in perfect accord with what we strive to achieve in film and television.

To awaken emotions, to create fresh and different feelings, tantamount to what you do through your cuisine”

Jaume Roures

El Somni transmits perfectly the image of the kind of city Barcelona is, a city of culture, of knowledge, of creativity and innovation.

Xavier Trias

“Blending everything in order to create moments of beauty, and thereby influencing the intellect far more directly…

This is what enables the cuisine to transcend….” Joan Roca

“The importance of taking risks, of not being afraid. The capacity to shatter preconceptions, to break the mould,

make the audience vulnerable so as to immerse oneself in it” Àlex Ollé

“The practice of bringing all the senses together and amalgamating all sensory elements has captivated the minds of mankind since ancient times.

Wagner pursued this through music, what he referred to as music drama. In the 20th century, we have the most unique art form; film, which, since its

inception, has also strived to achieve this totality…” Rafael Argullol

“…I cannot imagine an event like this taking place anywhere other than in Barcelona”

Lisa Randall

“We are faced with a difficulty, the risk of emotional and sensory saturation. The desire to please staved off this saturation, as generosity abounded, there

was a fervent desire to achieve perfection in everything” Joël Candau

“I always find it fascinating to see chefs working at the limits of their discipline, watching how they strive to surpass the boundaries of

what we know and what we don’t know and sometimes they discover a side to food that even scientists couldn’t have imagined.

They transport the dining experience to another dimension” Harold McGee

“It’s fascinating how an idea, an art piece, like visual art, a culinary component can make you feel this way.”

Freida Pinto

“I think the experience of the total work of art is something all artists crave. It is said that opera is the closest you come to that,

I don’t believe so; I believe that what we witnessed today came very close to that absolute idea.”

Miquel Barceló

“This is exactly the reason why I live in Barcelona;

people take risks here, whether in architecture, cuisine, or new sciences”

Ben Lehner

“Beyond imagination and well ahead of its time. These are the two ideas that came to mind during this event...

We’ll witness how these experiences will transform our culture, how they will change the future of our society.

Tonight I have been allowed a brief glimpse of what the future holds.” Abderrahamane Kheddar

“I think this is going to keep neurobiologists very busy for decades to come.”

Harold McGee

“This is a fascinating experience. The word ‘dinner’ just doesn’t come close to

describing it. It was like finding yourself in the midst of paradise; one understands why the project is called “The Dream”, because it’s like being in a

dream, similar to a journey to an unknown destination. I believe it’s an unparalleled and exceptional experience … Some artistic

experiences just cannot be described using tangible terms.” “It was an incredible experience”

Nandita Daas

“... if we fail to realize this dream we have, it will cease to exist” Josep Roca

“… Dress it in poetry, work with complete freedom… we’ll work non-stop, like ants… we’ll strive to tell a tale, a fable,

“The Dream” has to survive…” Josep Roca

“el somni” (The Dream) is a journey through the world of ideas, creation and thought using the discourse inherent to documentary film, combining narrative and stylistic resources ranging over the broadest spectrum of sources of experimental art, fiction and animation film sources. Being impossible to condense into the genre of film, this free creative feature-length film extends and complements everything the "el somni" (The Dream) project conveys. The story unfolds followings the same 12 concepts outlined in the libretto of the culinary opera, contributing additional features and a fresh dimension to the overall project narrative. It should under no circumstance be confused with a ‘making of’ of the project’s creative process; on the contrary, it is best expressed as a work in its own right.

"el somni", the film “el somni” is a unique film, promoted and produced by MEDIAPRO, in collaboration with the Barcelona City Hall, showcasing the creative process of more than 40 artists who participated in a dinner. The event, in the form of a 12 course opera with the culinary creations of the Roca Brothers and directed by Franc Aleu, distinguished innovator of contemporary opera, offers the viewer a never-seen-before experience through a multi-format performance. The film uses discourse characteristic of documentary film combined with the narrative resources of experimental film, fiction and animation. For the first time ever, the creative talents of musicians, poets, painters, composers, singers, and visual artists from around the world come together for a dining experience that fuses art and cuisine. “el somni” shatters the boundaries of all artistic disciplines, space and concepts to make way for a marriage between opera and gastronomy, with art and thought as the driving forces behind the project. The film provides spectators with an opportunity to witness the project’s birth and a chance to delve into the emotions that make up the discourse created by the Roca Brother’s cuisine, which aims to evoke feelings and emulate the experience of the dinner guests in attendance at the event held in Barcelona. Distributed by Cameo and Filmin, the film affords cinemagoers an up-close look at the Roca Brothers’ singular form of creation and their take on life which has enabled them to create an internationally acclaimed cuisine. The viewer is not simply a mere onlooker, but also a witness to the emotions created using food through images designed by Franc Aleu, in collaboration with artists, musicians, and world-class designers. Among these we can find artists and creators such as Peret, Roland Olbeter, Carlos Fesser, Luca Francesconi, Pedro Alcalde, Sergio Caballero, Sílvia Pérez Cruz, Elena Katz Chernin, Albert Guinovart, Wolfgang Mitterer, Bernat Vivancos, Albert Pla, Carles Duarte, Pau Riba, Rafael Argullol, Arturo C. Urbina, Mariona Castelar, Roos Van de Velde, Taller Luesma Vega, Pere Gifré, Daniel Molina, Joan Crous, Andreu Carulla, Sabiote Innova, Luca Francesconi, Elaine Mitchener, Kolja Blacher, Ravid Goldschmidt, Judit Farré, Clàudia Schneider, Ilona Schneider, Mariona Castelar, Ferran Carvajal, Anna Roblas, Andreas Jankowitsch, Latvian Radio Choir, Pau Codina, Marta Requena, Maria Bou, Alba Aro and Oleguer Aymamí.

The “el somni” dinner brings together twelve people from very different walks of life, each excellent in their own field and who share one common denominator: the curiosity to experiment, to go beyond the boundaries of the senses. Ferran Adrià, chef and co-owner of El Bulli; Rafael Argullol, novelist, poet and essayist; Miquel Barceló, artist; Joël Candau, an anthropologist specializing in sensory sciences ; Bonaventura Clotet, one of the leading international experts in HIV research; Nandita Das, actress and one of the most renowned directors in Indian cinema; Abderrahmane Kheddar, world-leading expert in the science of touch, virtual reality and humanoid robotics; Ben Lehner, a biologist and researcher and one of the most brilliant scientists in his field, Harold McGee, author specializing in the chemistry, technique and history of food and cooking, Freida Pinto, actress who has starred in films including "Slumdog Millionaire" o “You Will Meet A Tall Dark Stranger”; Josep Pons, music director of the Liceu Barcelona Opera House; Lisa Randall, theoretical physicist and leading expert on cosmology. The presence and testimony of these 12 renowned individuals endorses the creative process which is “el somni”.

"el somni”, the all-embracing work Image, subject matter, music, taste and smell, all converge in a transmedia work: a culinary opera about the cyclical journey of human existence. Conceived as a global work, “el somni” has a version in all forms of cultural transmission. The El Celler de Can Roca, a world of culinary excellence, Franc Aleu, leading innovator in the aesthetics of contemporary opera, and MEDIAPRO, leader and benchmark in content production, invite you to experience and enjoy a never-seen-before encounter: the marriage between gastronomy and the world of opera with a fascinating, multi-format performance, a ground-breaking, unique experience which involves renowned personalities from several different scientific and cultural fields of speciality, establishing a harmony that can transcend the boundaries of their respective disciplines with the aim of inspiring emotions. A spearheading work of art and cuisine that smashes through the frontiers of creation to offer us a total grasp of beauty. This consummate transmedia creation of “el somni” takes shape in the following formats:

• the film, a unique feature length film creation • the dinner, a culinary opera divided into 12 acts for 12 dinner guests, held May 6, 2013 in

Barcelona • the book, culture’s most revered and sacred icon, the mission of which is to document the

project, capturing the creative process and pooling participants’ reflections • the exhibition, an open doorway to the world of “el somni" • Barcelona Cards, authentic visual poems designed to inspire and bolster creativity, and used in

“el somni” as the inspiration for the developing script. This range of different formats explains the process of creation and the adventure of this amalgamation of cuisine and art, thought and emotion dreamt up as a consummate opera, as the fusion of all artistic talents.

- "The best restaurant in the world" (The Restaurant) –

Joan Roca, Chef

“el somni” is a 21st century tribute to Vatel" Trained in the renowned Girona Catering School, Joan is considered one of the world’s greatest and most influential chefs. At the age of 9, his mother presented him with a chef’s coat which he still possesses; even at this early age he demonstrated a love for cooking and a strong desire to become a chef. In 1986, he and his brother Josep opened El Celler de Can Roca. In 1998, their younger brother, Josep, joined the kitchen of El Celler. They opened their modern restaurant in a small venue, right next to their parent’s establishment. Josep and Montse Roca Fontané, owners of Can Roca, opened the popular bar and restaurant in 1967 in Taialà-Germans Sàbat, a modest neighbourhood on the outskirts of Girona. The brothers grew up, developed and began receiving accolades, awards and Michelin stars for their impeccable, meticulous and delicious cuisine. Having received many awards in his home country, he can now claim to be a prophet in his own land. 1995 was the year they were awarded their first Michelin star, the second in 2002 and finally, the third Michelin star was bestowed upon the restaurant on November 25, 2009. Since 2011, he is considered the second best chef in the world. In 2000, he received the National Gastronomy Best Chef Award from the Spanish Academy of Gastronomy. In 2010, he received the Medal for Tourist Merit, awarded by the Ministry of Tourism and in 2010 he was awarded Doctor Honoris Causa by the University of Girona. In 2011, he received another major award: The Grand Prix de l'Art de la Cuisine, presented by the International Academy of Gastronomy. Joan Roca has published several cookbooks, the most prominent of which include one on Roner vacuum cooking, which he helped to develop and is today one of the most essential tools in any great restaurant around the world. His scientific approach to cooking has awarded him an invitation to lecture at Harvard University.

Jordi Roca, Pastry chef

"We dared to close our eyes in order to forget reference points so that we would be capable of opening up to the kitchen of possibilities. We have awoken

into a dream which may alter the course of our lives" Jordi Roca spent his childhood and youth surrounded by gastronomy, first at his parents' restaurant, Can Roca, and then at the restaurant of his brothers Joan and Josep, El Celler de Can Roca. He studied at the renowned Girona Catering School and having finished his training, he joined the team at El Celler. This was where he got to know Welsh pastry chef Damian Allsop, who introduced him to the secrets of the craft of pastry cuisine. In 2000, when Allsop left El Celler, Jordi became the manager of the desserts section. Seven years later, he published Dolces Sensacions (Sweet Sensations, Ara llibres), a collection of dessert recipes created especially for the Spanish cookery magazine Cocina. He has won several awards, among them the award for Best Pastry Chef of the Year (2003) given by The Best of Gourmet, the Best Pastry in the province of Girona (2004), also the Gourmetour Guide awarded him the Best Dessert Menu and Best Desserts Award in 2005, the award for Best Dessert presented by the ABC Chilli Sauce Blog (2007) and the Paco Torreblanca Best Pastry Chef Award in 2010, presented by the Spanish Royal Academy of Gastronomy.

director’s comments “el somni” is a desire, a wish to realize a dream. This is a journey through an undine’s dream, that of Astrid, our muse. It is also the dream many artists have pursued throughout history, to combine all artistic disciplines in one single work in an effort to push emotion to the limit. This is also our intention. Taking our inspiration from Vatel, who combined his vast array of talents to create grand banquets in the 17th century, and also from Wagner, whose goal was for Opera to become the total work of art, we perceive “el somni” (The Dream) as what a marriage ceremony between Opera and Gastronomy would be, the meeting of all art forms to achieve moments of sheer emotion. To do this we created a story, the libretto, which serves as the narrative thread for a dinner for twelve guests in twelve acts, with music and audiovisuals. For this creation, we surrounded ourselves with composers, who in our opinion were the most suited for conceiving each of the twelve acts. In addition, we brought with them a quartet of string robots and audiovisual creators, philosophers, poets, artists, tableware designers, fine wines and innovative creations from the Roca Brothers, specially designed for each act. Moreover, we surrounded ourselves with scientists and thinkers who have accompanied us on this fascinating journey. All this for a dinner. A dinner for twelve guests. Who are the dinner guests? This was yet another of the important questions to be answered. 12 individuals we admired, who would sample this event with us and who we would learn from and observe closely to witness their reactions and opinions. We have made a film from this entire process. This is not a ‘Making of’. The film, “el somni”, strives to depict the creative process involving more than 60 creators from the broadest possible range of fields. It is at the same time, a journey through the reflections and thoughts of both authors and experts alike. In addition, it is the adventure of a never-seen-before event; the dinner held on May 6th in Barcelona, journeying with Astrid and experiencing first-hand the emotions of that encounter. The film crystalizes a process which places gastronomy one step beyond anywhere it has ever been before. Using straightforward and honest photography and montage with the assistance of Jo Sol, in which the range of mental processes crisscrosses with creation, the journey, the search for limits and emotion. It is also a unique opportunity to demonstrate the kindness of the Roca Brothers to the world at large. I trust you will enjoy it.

el celler de can roca comments We are not artists, we are craftsmen. In the scope of messages that can be projected from the kitchen, there is always an aspect of disdain and even vanity concerning the anxiety to attain knowledge and to showcase. This is inherent to our consciousness… The Roca Brothers are curious by nature and this curiosity is the corner stone of creativity. Creativity is a therapeutic act, a process of healing and reconciliation. This is not necessarily associated with the culinary sciences. There is a form of creativity that is an attitude, a point of view, a way of life: pure creation. The road to creation is a perpetual adventure that starts afresh each new day. We are aware and accept the fact that the perfect work does not exist, but one has to search for the dish that eludes us, the dish we have yet to discover. If, from a creative point of view, there is an enriching element to this ever-so-sweet moment, we wish to refine that even further thanks to the collaboration with individuals who share an open vision and approach our world with freshness and innocence. Give and take. Take and give. We believe that we can foster this bidirectional feedback. And we feel obliged to do so. At El Celler de Can Roca, we strive to attract talent and boost the creative drive with additional initiative. Dialogue, permeability and the steady flow of creative talent is the very compost required for our creative field. Artisans, industrial engineers, artists, photographers, producers, musicians, chemists, poets, writers, illustrators, psychologists, physicists, perfumers, sensory anthropologists, and artists from every walk of life and with ever-increasing permeability, enter into our richly fertilized field. We harness these synergies to create and embellish our discourse with enhanced beauty, with the leadership of a fresh and well-seasoned message. As time goes by, cooperation will become more and more necessary. We must open up new scientific, artistic and intellectual frontiers and the culinary world can make wonderfully enriching use of this. The aesthetics of the dinner table, the feeling and consistency of an idea provide us with bridges to dialogue and the materialization of a work designed to seduce. We can harness the symbiosis and tether to this brainstorming event objects or specific dishes. We wish to demonstrate the merits of this transdisciplinary dialogue through our actions. We wish to act as facilitators for the expansion of ideas. We will continue to chase the dream…

production comments

Throughout the twenty years we have been in business, we have striven to seek out the best stories and the greatest storytellers to recount the tales. Our brand of cinema aims to transmit emotions, reaching spectators with the stories we have to tell and the manner in which we tell them. In the same way, the Roca Brothers delight in observing the impact their creation have on their dinner guests. Because of this, when the idea for “el somni” was no more than that, an idea, entering the unknown, we dived into the project without hesitation. The only way to move forward is to overcome the obstacles, taking the next step forward. We had the best possible travelling companions to reach our destination while at the same time ensuring that the voyage was going to be an exciting one. These have been twelve months of hard work condensed into what is now 83 intense minutes. Conjugating the wealth of disciplines that make up “el somni” has been an arduous but exhilarating task. This is the first time we have ever taken on a project involving such a wide range of artistic disciplines and techniques. Nevertheless, we faced the task with the fortitude derived from our accumulated experience, the creative potential of Franc Aleu, the Roca Brothers, the more than 40 artists who have participated in the event, and a yearning to transform Barcelona into a global benchmark of the artistic vanguard. We cannot ignore the technical challenges involved in getting the project off the ground, which were equally as daunting as the artistic challenges. The artistic discourse is fostered, supported and strengthened by the technological side, without stealing its limelight, without making too much fuss, but with extraordinary rigour and efficiency. In this area we also had to mesh several technical specialities and innovate in many different fields, to push beyond the established boundaries in order to achieve the desired effect. The universal vision of “el somni” was crystal clear from day one. Because our senses and emotions are universal, universal too is music, poetry, cuisine, film … We could not limit ourselves, nor wished to do so. We must raise our sights and seek out excellence wherever it may be. The source of a musical piece or that of a dinner guest was not important. What did matter was that for them all to slot into culinary opera in perfect harmony. And, in the opinion of those of us who have been lucky enough to have worked on the project, the end result borders on excellence. Now, it is for spectators around the world to enjoy the unique experience through this film and to judge whether it lives up to expectations.

comments from Barcelona City Council Barcelona is a city in constant development and one accustomed to reinventing itself on a daily basis. It has distinguished itself throughout history due to its dynamic, unconventional, welcoming and entrepreneurial nature. This character has enabled it to establish itself as an avant-garde city and to spearhead initiatives which have marked a before and after in our history. When we were presented with the “el somni” project some time ago, we decided to back it and collaborate in any way we could, as we believed in the idea, the talent of those in charge and those who would be involved – with the Roca Brothers and Franc Aleu as its creators, Mediapro as the producer- and the efforts of co-creation and cooperation of more than 40 artists from a wide array of disciplines and nationalities who have enriched it to the point of presenting us with the masterpiece we can enjoy today. We were approached and invited to participate on a symbiotic level. On the one hand, the creators were clear that a transmedia work of an experimental and revolutionary nature such as the project they were proposing had to have the backing of Barcelona, as a city that offers such an inspirational setting and is so committed to fostering new trends. On the other hand, Barcelona City Council believed in “el somni” as it would constitute a fresh and valuable demonstration of its undertaking to strengthen the innovative and creative nature of a restless city eager to welcome and cultivate talent as a strategy for economic growth and quality of life. The entire work, and especially the film, clearly depicts this beauty of creation, sensibility, aesthetics, emotion and the amalgamation of art forms. It gives us great pride to have been involved from the very beginning, supporting what was merely an outline sketch and to have been proven right having seen the end result. Of course, we were well aware of the outstanding nature of those proposing the project and as such, it was indeed a low risk gamble… You have before you the result, for all to experience, and we hope, to enjoy.
