■ A competition that has designed its own Universal tasting glass

Since 2012, Challenge International du Vin tasters have been using the universal tasting glass launched by CDV.The glass is the result of a design process initiated several years ago by Jacques Blouin and Fabienne Cortadi and subsequently developed by Hervé Romat. The objective was to design a glass suited to the diversity of the wines tasted in the competitions : all types of wine, and all provenances.

It is a top quality hand-blown tasting glass made by the Lehmann-Verrerie de la Marne (glassworks in the French Marne department). It presents the

qualities of a wine without disguising possible defects. Features :- A fairly wide base (70 mm) to hold a sufficient volume of wine for a mise en bouche of around 50 ml.- Angle of 120° between the base and the bowl.

- «High» type bowl (100 mm).- Mouth that is relatively «closed» (50 mm), though fairly wide.- Fairly tall stem (80 mm), with a wide base to ensure stability.- At the aesthetic level, the bowl is «ovoid» with a harmonious ratio close to the

golden section, between the base and the bowl, naturally harmonious.- At the practical level, it is a good size while remaining discreet, accepts a fair

volume without «consuming» too much wine, pleasant both to behold and in its feel on the lips owing to the fine quality of the hand-blown glass.

■ A competition that presents its Ambassadors with a “Monnaie de Paris ” Paris mint version of their medal

The Challenge International du Vin has created a Florentine lacquered raw bronze medal made by the Paris mint workshops.

This is reserved for competition tasters and award-winners and for fêted personalities.

In 2009, CDV (Concours Des Vins) secured ISO 9001 certification (2008 version) for its Challenge International du Vin competition.

This certification is the formal recognition of a longstanding quality approach. Over the 36 years it has existed, the Challenge International du Vin has set up a highly professional and rigorous approach that has now been rewarded.

From processing the samples to managing the tasters, not forgetting internal organisation, CDV has made the Challenge International du Vin into a reference in quality terms among the competitions of the world.

The Agir Cancer Gironde association collects the corks and sells them to a cork specialist in the Aquitaine region. All proceeds go to the Bergonié Institute in Bordeaux (INSERM Unit 916 -Vinco). www.agircancergironde.com

A Competition ...- Certified :

- Eco-responsible :

■ Eco-responsible actionsThe Challenge International du Vin continues its work to respect and protect the environment by reducing waste. The glass of the bottles used (over 4,360) will be collected in a skip located near the tasting area and subsequently recycled. This year, plastic will also be collected. The wine will be recovered and distilled.■ Solidarity actions

For several years, corks from the competition have been collected up and given to the Agir Cancer Gironde association. CDV members also contribute to this solidarity action by returning their corks to the collection corner at the CDV head office in Bourg. In October 2013, CDV will present the corks to the Agir Cancer Gironde association representatives in a ceremony held in Bourg.

CDV has longlasting partnerships with several training institutes and wine tasting clubs, etc.

■ l’Institut des Sciences de la Vigne et du Vin (ISVV) (‘’the Institute for Sciences of Vine and Wine’’) and the Bordeaux Oenology Faculty

For many years, CDV has contributed to training by preparing people for a diploma in oenology and it awards a prize to the best student taster. Within the framework of the internationally renowned DUAD (Diplôme Universitaire d’Aptitude à la Dégustation des vins/University Diploma in wine-tasting), CDV also awards a prize to the best taster.

■ The Bordeaux Oenologists’ AssociationThis longstanding partnership was set up to ensure high quality exchanges with the profession.

■ The path to worldwide success1977 : Set up of the first Concours National des Vins in the Blayais-Bourgeais region by the Hauts de Gironde Promotion Committee.Aim : award medals to the best French wines in the competition. There were 400 wines competing in the first edition.

1981 : Launch of the first Concours International de Vins following the set up of Vinexpo that same year.

Organisation of the competition every 2 years when Vinexpo takes place. First edition: 350 samples; the Concours National des Vins en Blayais-Bourgeais had a maximum of 1,420 products at the time.

1988 : First edition of the European competition for brandies of winegrowing origin. The event was a big success with the consequence that brandies are part of the wide family of products featuring in the Concours des Vins en Blayais-Bourgeais.

1992 : The competition changed its name to Challenge International du Vin and adopted the face of Bacchus drawn by French actor Jean Marais. This new name outlined the merger of the two competitions (national and international) forming one international competition open to all wines and brandies of winegrowing origin around the world.

1992 : A Promotion tool : CIVART.The Challenge International du Vin decided to boost the value of wines around the world by setting up an event to complement the competition, known as CIVART (Challenge International du Vin et des Arts). Wines awarded a gold medal were re-tasted by personalities from the world of wine and the arts.

2000 : Birth of a new international OIV competition : Les Citadelles du Vin.Already well-known on an international basis, CDV added a prestigious competition organised under the high patronage of the OIV (Organisation Internationale de la Vigne et du Vin/International Organisation for Vine and Wine): Les Citadelles du Vin.

2004 : A new name for the association : C.D.V.With two separate competitions to organise each year (Challenge International du Vin and Les Citadelles du Vin), the association that had borne the name of one of the competitions until then (Challenge International du Vin), needed to change its name for simplification purposes. The organising structure is now called C.D.V (Concours Des Vins).

2009 : Set up of the Malbec International Competition. As Bourg can claim to be one of the first areas to welcome Cot varietal vineyards to make Mr Malbeck’s famous wine, it seemed entirely logical and legitimate for CDV to set up an international competition devoted to the noble MALBEC varietal, in compliance with OIV rules.
