North Indian classical music concert

with Bansuri player Kiran Hegde

Montreal, March 4th, 2013 – In collaboration with Muralivan, Festival Accès Asie is pleased to present a North Indian classical music concert (Hindustani music) with the fabulous Kiran Hegde who just arrived from India and who will delight you by the magical sounds of his Bansuri (Indian flute). Kiran Hegde will be accompanied by the talented tabla player, Shawn Mativetsky. The event will be held on May 11th, at 8:00 pm, at the Auditorium de la Grande Bibliothèque.

Kiran Hegde comes from the beautiful countryside of Karnataka where in each house, culture and music are especially important. Kiran belongs to a new generation of Hindustani musicians. His unique style conveys the focus and determination he has brought to his studies with some of the finest acclaimed masters of India. He has participated in and won several national instrumental music competitions and he

has given performances all over India. His love of bansuri and Hindustani classical music has him teaching many students on a regular basis in order to transmit his unique heritage. He has also created Muralivan, heritage of the culture, an association to promote arts in rural areas.

Able to master both vocal and instrumental styles, each performance is a special transmission of this millennial art. In this unique concert, Kiran's performance will focus on Raga Bhoopali, one of the melodic modes that personifies and illustrates the evening, and which will transport us all, in a wonderful moment of magic.

Flautist Kiran Hegde will be accompanied on tabla by verstatile percussionist, Shawn Mativetsky (http://www.shawnmativetsky.com), who performs in a variety of musical genres with dynamism and skill. Equally at home in Indian classical music, world music, and contemporary/new music, Shawn also composes and performs for dance and theatre. Exponent of the Benares gharana, and disciple of the legendary Pandit Sharda Sahai, Shawn Mativetsky is a highly sought-after tabla performer and educator. He is active in the promotion of the tabla and North Indian classical music through lectures, workshops, and performances across Canada and internationally. Based in Montreal, Shawn
