WHO WE ARE
08 13MARINE CORPS COMMUNITY SERVICES // IWAKUNI, JAPAN
The Health & Fitness Expo included a HITT kneeling med ball throw challenge that
drew lots of attention and healthy com-petition. Female Marines took the pull-up challenge for for a chance to win a t-shirt. There were also Health Promotion booths, massage demos, dance performances and professionals on site to answer any ques-tions. The event included information for all ages and each Semper Fit activity was
there to represent their section.
"Thank you to the community, MC Perry HS Health class, BHC, Dental, MCCS, and our
volunteers for making this event a success!"
Barbara Roman MCCS Fitness Coordinator
"We have always enjoyed the variety of special events
the library offers. Most re-cently, Dr. Seuss's Birthday
party. Our girls loved the live reading and the crafts!
We love the cultural experi-ences that are offered the most! The FamCam loft is a wonderful resource for keeping us in touch with friends and family while
we are seemingly a world apart. "
- Tiffany Lyon-Hill
" I got to go the Kintai Castle and learn more about the history of the area. I got
to meet with like-minded people and share a great
opportunity with the Single Marine Program. What I
enjoy most about the trips and volunteer work out of
town is helping the com-munity; being in Japan is a
blessing and volunteer work is one of the best ways to
give back."
- LCpl David Herrera

CROSSROADS CONSTRUCTION NOTICE
This is when all vehicle owners must pay their respective vehicles taxes. While this point is important, it is imperative that you know your vehicle must be registered to this base and prefecture or adjacent prefecture by April 1, 2016. This
simply means that if you were previously registered in Okinawa and you transferred to MCAS Iwakuni with a vehicle and never registered at Pass and Registration building 608, prior to April 1, 2016 you will be responsible for paying your taxes in Okinawa or another bases prefecture.
Signs will be posted at key locations throughout the base to remind you to pay your road tax. Prices may differ slightly from previous year but shouldn’t vary much from last year’s payment. If you are unsure of the
previous amount paid please look at the documents used for vehicle registration, you should have the following: Title, Japanese Compulsory Insurance, Recycling Fee receipt (motorcycles will not have one), secondary car
insurance and the Road Tax receipt which is usually a little white piece of paper about the size of a credit card that states “Automobile Tax Stamp” across the middle. These are the primary documents you will need when you go to Pass and
Registration to validate payment and registration, along with the vehicle being registered. IF YOU HAVE LOST ANY OF THESE DOCUMENTS PLEASE GO TO PASS AND REGISTRATION AND RECEIVE THE PROPER DOCUMENTS TO RECOVER SAID FORMS.
AUTO SKILLS CENTER OFFICE BLDG 1350 APRIL 1-30 (CLOSED MON) TUE - FRI NOON - 6 PM, SAT 9 AM - 5 PM, SUN 10 AM - 6 PM The tax is required by Japanese law, so pay your Road Tax right on base (Yamaguchi Prefecture plates only). Cost is $5 per vehicle plus required tax, call 253-5325 for fee structure.

COMMUNITY ARTICLE
O r i gam i is a tradi-tional hobby in Japan that uses various folds to create shapes from paper and is known around the world as one of Japan's unique, traditional arts. From classic folds to modern patterns, you can find directions to make 3D ani-mals, planes, boxes, flowers and pretty much anything. There are folds that can transform paper into shuriken (ninja throwing stars) and samurai hats, which are often associated with Japanese culture. It is amazing how many shapes we can create from just a single sheet of paper! As long as you have a sheet of paper, you can cre-ate origami anywhere, without using scissors or paste.
You are never too old for origami. There are intricate origami patterns that are very challenging for adults and take skill to create. As a matter of fact, scientists study origami because it is effective for finger training and rehabilitation at hospitals. Some hospitals and nursing homes adopt it as a form of therapy.
“Ori,” comes from the Japanese verb oru (fold). “Gami,” meaning "paper,” is a modification of the true word for paper, “kami.” Oru plus kami became origami. (In Japanese, a suffix starting with a “k” is usually softened to a “g”.) Chinese or Europeans may have introduced ori-gami to Japan; its origin is not clear. What we do know is that the Japanese began folding paper sometime in the seventh century, after China introduced paper-mak-ing technology. Nowadays, you can find a variety
of paper to work with, but traditionally Japanese used washi made
from wood pulp.
The Japanese paper crane, orizuru, is the most well-known origami shape. Japanese believe the crane is a symbol of long life and that folding a thousand origami cranes (called senba-zuru) will bring good fortune and health. If someone we know is ill or hospitalized, we will bring these paper cranes to make a wish for the person to get well soon. Family and friends of high school sports teams may bring them to the stadium to wish for their victory during tournaments.
Cultural Adaptation Program will host an origami class April 15 at bldg #411. First, we will make orizuru. Then we will challenge ourselves by making a solid ornament ball. I promise that you’ll never look at paper the same way again. See you next month! Ja ne!

There is an old saying in the military that addresses fami-lies: "If the military wanted you
to have a family, it would have issued you one." While this may sound a bit harsh to some, the
life of a military child is not always easy. I grew up a proud Navy brat.
I can remember waiting for my dad to come off of the USS Saratoga from yet an-
other cruise. I remember how much I missed my dad when he was gone and how I hated
that he missed birthdays and holidays because of his job. Years later, after much teasing from my
dad, I married a US Army soldier and we have three military children of our own.
As a mother of three, I have seen firsthand the challenges that military children face in their daily lives. They experience
multiple moves, changing schools, being the new kid, saying goodbye to old friends, isolation from extended family, and separation from their mili-tary parent(s). Unlike the civilian world, military children must grow up in a world of uncertainty. They never know when it will be time to move again or when a parent will be deployed. Military children may also face the chal-lenge of dealing with a parent whose life has dramatically changed due to deployments.
Despite the challenges, there are so many positives. My children have had the opportunity to live overseas and experience different cultures. They have made connections with other military children and now have friends around the world. They have learned how to adapt to different environments and to be open to new experiences. They have learned the importance of both patience and humor in everyday life. Some experts have stated that military children are known to be well-rounded, culturally aware, tolerant, and resilient. I may be a bit biased but I wholeheartedly agree with that statement.
Secretary of Defense Caspar Weinberger established the Month of the Military Child in 1986 to emphasize the important role our children play in the military community. Each year during the month of April, we have the opportunity to focus on the outstanding qualities and specific needs of military children. We can celebrate their uniqueness and special contribu-tions to military life. We ask a great deal from our military children. After more than a decade of war, the well-being of all military children depends

Fun Facts• There are approximately
1.9 million military children, ranging in age from newborn to 18 years old. 1.3 million military children are school-aged.
• 765,000 of our military children have active duty parents, and approximately 225,000 have a parent who is currently deployed.
• More than 700,000 children have experienced the deploy-ment of one or more parents since 2001.
• Over 80% of military-connected children attend U.S. public schools, and less than 8 % attend Department of Defense schools.

greatly on a strong, stable network of supportive adults. It can be a teacher, a community volunteer, or a parent. These role models can play a pivotal role in the life of a military child.
The official flower of the military child is the dandelion.
Why?The plant puts down roots almost anywhere, and it's almost impossible to destroy. It's an unpretentious plant,
yet good looking. It's a survivor in a broad range of climates. Military children bloom everywhere the winds carry them.
They are hardy and upright. Their roots are strong, cultivated deeply in the culture of the military, planted swiftly and surely.
They're ready to fly in the breezes that take them to new ad-ventures, new lands, and new friends.
Here at MCAS Iwakuni, the MCCS Marine & Family Programs Division has scheduled multiple events to celebrate the military children on our installation. I invite you to make a difference in the life of a military child by seeking out opportunities to ac-knowledge their trials and triumphs. You can volunteer for or-ganizations, such as the Boys’ and Girls’ Club, to help celebrate their contribution to the nation by simply expressing your appre-ciation with a few hours of your time. Youth Sports is always in need of volunteers and coaches, too.
Tonya Van Winkle works for Marine and Family Programs and is one of the Training & Curriculum Specialists that support the Child & Youth Programs on the installation. She lives in Iwakuni with her husband and children.

FR IENDSHIP DAY
JMSDF
M CA S IW AKUNI, JAPAN
Returning to its original date of May 5, Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni Friendship Day 2016 is ramping up to be a banner celebration. This year marks the 40th anniversary of MCAS Iwakuni opening its doors to our host nation, introducing them to American military culture and throwing one heck of a party! With this being a historic year, there is an impressive schedule of events including an air show, and the Friendship Day planning committee is anticipating a record-breaking 300,000 visitors. MCAS Iwakuni Friendship Day continues to show the committed relationship between Japan and the United States on global, military, and local level.

40 Years of Friendship
IT TAKES 4094 HOURS TO SET UP,
EXECUTE, & BREAKDOWN
You would have to work 2 years of full time work with no vacation or holidays to pull off this event.
This is also the second year that the event is an official partner-ship between MCAS Iwakuni and Japan Maritime Self Defense Force. Although they have continuously supported over the years via manpower, static displays, aircraft, and entertain-ment, 2015 was the first year that JMSDF officially co-hosted the event. The continued partnership between both the US and Japan in executing Friendship Day serves as yet another symbol of our two countries’ significant alliance.
This year, guests will have their eyes toward the skies for a thrill-ing air show with special guest performances by husband and wife daredevils, the Pemberton Jumpers. Also performing is Yoshihide Muroya, one of the top aerobatic pilots in the world and the first Asian Red Bull Racer. Masahiro Utsumi, a world class competitor, will round out the aerobatic performances. Besides the exciting action above ground level, there will be plenty to do and see below. USMC, US Navy and US Air Force, JMSDF and JASDF military aircraft will be on display and both countries will feature military static displays. As the dust settled on last year’s event, plans for 2016 were already in full swing. Executing one of the largest single day airshows in the world requires much ef-fort by many activities and a huge amount of manpower. LtCol Robert E. Carlson Jr. sits as Air Show Director, a position histori-cally held by a Marine, and coordinates with MCAS in managing the aircraft, airshow, and military static displays. MCAS also coordinates security, emergency management, ground crew, military manpower, and electricity logistics. The assistant direc-tor position is traditionally from MCCS and is currently MCCS Special Events Manager, Bob Rudolph. MCCS arranges and ne-gotiates marketing and sponsorship, booking of entertainment acts, and hospitality support for guests.
You can expect modified facility and operational hours throughout the installation on May 5 in support of
Friendship Day. Please visit www.mccsiwakuni.com or the Friendship Day Facebook page for MCCS adjusted
facility hours and closures.
We hope you’ll take advantage of the opportunity of having one of the highest attended single-day air shows in your backyard. This event offers a great opportunity to mingle with our host nation on the 40th anniversary of MCAS Iwakuni Friendship Day and celebrate our continued friendship.

MCCS CHAT
Can MCCS add more Group Fitness Classes?
In March, we offered 30 free classes including Zumba, Kickboxing, Yoga and Powerstep, among others. We’re able to offer these services based on the avail-ability of qualified and certified group fitness pro-fessionals. Most of our instructors are active duty personnel or family members with demanding work and personal schedules, which limits their availability to conduct classes. Some instructors are Japanese national contractors, and MCCS will continue to en-courage them to fill extra slots.
As the population continues to grow here on the air station, the community could potentially benefit from an increase in group fitness instructors who possess advanced and basic group fitness certifications from organizations approved by the Marine Corps. This will of course provide Semper Fit with the opportunity to expand the class schedule and also offer more class-es during the weekday, as well as the weekend.
Can we get a public, MCCS-funded Shooting Range and Paintball Field?
Before the DPRI growth, MCCS had an outdoor paint-ball range that has since been replaced. There have been discussions to bring back a facility, however there are no areas available for an indoor recreational shooting program within the DPRI planning phases. An ideal facility for a shooting range would consist of firing lanes, trap areas, range control areas, a class-room, gun storage, eyewash stations, locker storage, viewing area, and restrooms. MCAS Iwakuni does not have a building or space large enough that is not already designated for demolition or another pur-pose. The same can be said for a paintball program; there are currently no facilities available for paintball. MCCS will continue to look for opportunities that are conducive for these recreational activities.
MCCS Chat is a program in which MCCS representatives visit various MCCS facilities to speak one-on-one with the community. These sessions offer the community the opportunity to get immediate answers to their MCCS questions. But more importantly, MCCS can get ideas and suggestions directly from the community that can help MCCS improve its programs and facilities. Each month, we will include your questions here. We hope that you enjoy reading our responses and watching your suggestions take motion. Thank you for taking the time to chat with us and helping us continually improve!SPE House

5 Annoying People You'll Find at the Gymby Aaron Roman, Community Writer
For the majority of people, a gym is a place where one can feel better about the whole pizza they devoured alone. However, to some, the gym is holy space. It serves as a location of intense physical labor and focus, a second home, and a place of worship to the god of gains. No matter why we attend the gym, we can all agree on a group of people who drive us crazy. Here are a few of them.
PERSPERIOUS MAXIMUS
Sweating (as much as we may gripe about it) is a good thing. It’s a handy way to expel waste from our bodies (or as the gym rats call it: weakness) and physically see the salt of your labor. There’s nothing wrong with basking in the glory of your own workout, but nobody wants to bask in it with you. The gym and all the equipment in it are for public use. Unless you died pushing weight on a piece of gym equipment (which some gym bros can respect), we shouldn’t find a chalk outline version of you. Wipe it down!
THE WATCHER
Let's pretend that you just started warming up at the squat rack and some gym mem-ber asks how many sets you have left. You explain that you have only just started. Now, rather than finding a new place to exercise, this guy sits and waits while watch-ing you. This guy is trying to silently guilt you into getting through your workout faster for his convenience. Listen, buddy, if I wanted to be watched, I would have become a professional athlete. Move along!
THE INTRUDER
It seems that everywhere we go there is someone who doesn’t understand personal space. At the gym, personal space is more important than ever.
Let’s face it, most people wouldn’t go near other people to work out if it didn’t mean access to great equipment and variety. However, if the guy
who uses the bench next to you is doing dumbbell flys while you do presses, you might get unwanted
dumbbell-on-dumbbell action. And just your luck, this is the same guy who forgot his deodorant.
Let me breathe!
THE COLLECTOR
As more and more people cram into the gym, less and less equip-ment becomes available. That’s just basic math. Yet, there are people who must do their ten supersets and Tabata while using every last piece of gym
equipment. They hoard all the equipment into a corner for their
never-ending routines. Everyone else now has to deal with the fact that every other
dumbbell is missing. Don’t be greedy!
THE MATHEMATICIAN
It is safe to assume that most people learned numbers and shapes in kindergarten. So why is there always a 50lb dumbbell where a 5lb dumbbell should be? Alternatively, what about the "shish kebab" of varying weight plates on every machine? Nobody should have to pull off four, 45lb plates to get to the ten pounders. Check out an episode of “Schoolhouse Rocks” if this describes you.
IronWorks Gym is a world-class facility, and their weight room features 56 weight machines, nine multi-functioning bench presses, kettlebells, free weights, dumbbells, and barbells. Practice becoming a respect-able member of society while you work out at the IronWorks Gym. Moreover, if you encounter one of the five mentioned above, just show them this article.

MYTH: Most sexual assaults occur in isolated places.
FACT: Sexual assaults may happen anywhere and anytime. Most often they occur in the residence of the victim or of-fender and the victim has willingly gone to the location.
MYTH: A rape survivor will be battered, bruised and hysterical.
FACT: Many rape survivors are not visibly injured. People react to crisis in different ways. The reaction may range from composure to anxiety, depression, flashbacks, and suicidal feelings.
MYTH: No woman or man can be sexually assaulted against his or her will. Any person could prevent a sexual assault if they really wanted to.
FACT: There is no “right way” to respond to a sexual assault. Some may fight, some may flight, and some may freeze.
MYTH: Women provoke rape by the way they dress or the way they flirt.
FACT: Rape is about power and control, and the manner of dress and behavior of a person are not the cause of rape.
Myth: It’s not sexual assault if those involved have had sex with each other before.
FACT: Consent must be given for every occasion of intimacy. Sexual assault is possible even in a marriage.
April is Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month and the Department of the Defense theme is “Eliminate Sexual Assault: Know Your Part. Do Your Part.” The DoD theme is a reminder for individuals to intervene and step in to prevent a sexual assault. Sexual assault has a long-lasting impact on the victim and indi-viduals surrounding the victim. The effects may be seen weeks, months and even years later.
According to the Justice Department, it is estimated that 68% of sexual assaults go unreported and that sexual assault is one of the most underreported crimes. Many individuals that commit sexual assaults go undetected and continue to commit these crimes over and over again until caught. Why are perpetrators undetected? There is a lot of shame and guilt associated with sexual assaults and many individuals choose not to report.
Individuals cite various reasons for not reporting a sexual assault to law enforcement or their Chain of Command such as fear of reprisal/retaliation, fear they wouldn’t be believed and fear of the legal system. Understanding the myths and facts about sexual assault may help to reduce barriers regarding reporting sexual assault.
MYTH vs. FACT: DO YOU KNOW THE FACTS ABOUT SEXUAL ASSAULT?
by Yasheka Robinson, Installation Sexual Assault Response Coordinator
Now that you know some of the myths and facts surrounding sexual assaults, en-courage others to learn the truth about sexual assault. If you have been sexually as-saulted and need assistance, the Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Program is available to provide support. Please call MCAS Iwakuni’s 24/7 Sexual Assault Support Line to speak to a Civilian or Uniformed Victim Advocate, 080-5865-3566.
