Tech Talk
T-Bird Tech Talk By Martin Bierman
“I would like a tach drive
distributor”
Question- A 1956 T-Bird owner would like to buy a tach drive distributor to go with his aftermarket carburetor and a 1957 intake manifold.
Answer- The classic T-Bird owner understands that when converting to an aftermarket carburetor he will need a 1957 intake manifold (or an adapter for a 1956 intake manifold) as well as a ‘57 or later distributor due to a higher vacuum advance signal from the carburetor. An original 1957 Thunderbird tach drive distributor is quite expensive and can run $600-$700. If one uses a 1957 or later non-tach drive distributor it is cheaper, but the tachometer drive is not present and one would need to use an aftermarket electric tachometer. Recently a brand new 1957 style tach drive distributor has become available. It comes with an electronic ignition module and a high-voltage coil. Its appearance is similar to the 1957 T-Bird distributor and has a black cap as opposed to the Mallory Unilite tach drive distributor which has a red cap and is no longer available. Presently this new tach drive distributor is being sold on E-Bay by multiple vendors for as low as $289.99 with the high output coil. For more information search on E-Bay with the following item number: 233500288089. Concours Parts also has these available.

MARTY BIERMAN’S T-Bird Story
When I turned sixteen in 1962, I told my father that I wanted to buy a 1956 Thunderbird. His response was “that’s a six-year-old car and will nickel and dime you to death.” It wasn’t until after the demands of marriage, children, and education that in 1988 I finally bought my first T-Bird, a Torch Red 1955. It was an early December 1954 model that was shipped to the Denver sales district. Other than being recently owned by a major in the Air Force and serviced recently in Shreveport, LA, I knew little of its past history. It had some body work repair in the past in the rockers and lower rear quarter panels and was a “10-footer”. Shortly after its purchase I asked my wife Mary Lou to take a summer Sunday drive. This was supposed to be a quick drive and she was dressed only in a tank top and shorts. About two miles from home it died and wouldn’t start again. I also drained the battery trying to restart it. Fortunately, there was a service station about three blocks away. Mary Lou pushed the bird while I steered. We must have been quite a sight when we arrived at the service station. The mechanic found the wire to the points was not tightened at its recent tune up and had come loose. After tightening it and recharging the battery we were again on our way. Over the next few years, I replaced the interior and restored the dash; detailed the engine compartment; purchased a black canvas soft top and radial tires. Later the front suspension and brakes were restored. I had purchased two more 1955 T-birds that occupied most of my restoration time until 2005 when I did a frame off
restoration of the red ‘55. Power steering, air conditioning, and a twelve-volt conversion were also done. The car was completed in 2007 in time to be shown at the Region 5 CTCI convention in Denver. It was awarded a Gold award and a Gold Medallion. Since that time, we have logged more than 12,000 miles driving to CTCI conventions in Tulsa, Dayton, Memphis, Des Moines and Kansas City. It has been part of Nebraskaland Thunderbird Club’s driving events and local shows and importantly Mary Lou has not had to push it again! Its siblings include Thunderbird Blue and Goldenrod Yellow 1955 T-Birds, but I will save their stories and Mary Lou’s pushing of them for another time. Martin and Mary Lou Bierman
