August 2016

As the real dog days of summer settle in driving around in a non-AC equipped LBC becomes a lot less appealing. The MGA is parked until at least September, too hot to drive. I haven’t even had the new (to me) Spitfire out for a run after I fixed the clutch system. I think we’re

all looking forward to the fall and cooler temps when it becomes a lot more enjoyable to jump in the car and go for a ride.

Dennis, Tina, Mert, Susanne and myself went on the Zorn trip at the end of June, which consisted of a Baltic cruise and a couple of days in London. Other than a quick trip to Brooklands, not much British car action. Dennis, Mert and myself stopped into the Tesla dealership in London, as we chanced across it on the way to a pub for lunch. Interesting car with a big control display, we briefly considered changing the display language to Far-si and leaving but decided against that.

Our British Car Days are fast approaching and it is shaping up to be another great show. Diane is putting in a lot of work and we could always use help in organizing, setup and working at the show. Brian has done another wonderful show poster that would be a great addition to a collection of garage art. We will be sending email blasts out to the club membership listing areas where we could use some help so look for those emails and jump in. If you know someone or a business that can help sponsor the show or make a do-nation to the Silent Auction tent then please let me know. We can always use giveaways and items to put in the registration bags so hit up your business contacts and see what they can do for us.

Mert will have the club grill badges in soon, they are very handsome.

The Columbia club is coming down in force for the show and we’re looking forward to those friends joining us for a fun weekend.

Diane’s Motorcar Morning for British Cars will be held on the 1st Saturday morning on each month at the Mt. Pleasant Cars and Coffee. It’s best to get there around 8:30 so we can park together as much as possible. This is a lot of fun and folks really enjoy see-ing our cars.

We’re changing up the meeting times to add some variety and to give the folks who can’t come on Saturday mornings a chance to come to a meeting. The next meeting will be on Weds the 17th at the West Ashley Crab Shack at 6:30pm. There is usually plenty of parking and we have the nice upstairs room to hold the meeting.

So that’s it for news from this side. It’s a good time to come to the meetings, have a meal, sit in the AC and commune with your fellow British Car owners.

Hello Everyone,

Our next monthly meet-up with the car enthusiasts at Towne Center Cars and Coffee will be Saturday, August 6th from 9 till 11 for those who are in town where we will continue the trend of the first Saturday of the month to join the 100 +/1 cars that show up to talk shop, kick tires, and in general, tell stories about where we’ve been, where we’re go-ing or what we’re doing with our cars. Always lots of banter and great camaraderie to be shared so join in and start your weekend off right!

Michael Rains undertook the very time consuming task of being our Events Coordinator, and from the feedback I’m hearing, he’s doing a great job of varying the days and places for our monthly meetings in an effort to accommodate as many of us as possible. That’s why the next meeting is Wednesday, August 17th at 6:30 p.m. at The Crab Shack.

With our crazy schedules these days, we need to step back and just say the heck with everything else for a couple of hours, say I’m just going to spend some time with my BCCC friends, enjoy some food and great camaraderie, and catch up with folks, talk some car talk and just kick back. I owe it to myself! That wasn’t so hard was it? I know I’d love to see some of you at our next meeting!

Preparations for British Car Day are coming along nicely; however, there are still several slots that I need to fill so please be part of the day by volunteering for one or maybe more of the following:

Welcome Reception – two volunteers confirmed – need at least two more Field set-up – five volunteers confirmed – need at least five more Field tear-down/transport to storage – four volunteers confirmed/ need at least six

more Parking directors to assist participants to their parking area – two volunteers con-

firmed/need four more Registration – two volunteers confirmed – would like one more BCCC Welcome tent – talk to attendees about the Club, share information and offer

free Windscreen issues as well as refreshments – coffee & pastries Ballot counters – two volunteers confirmed Silent Auction tent – one volunteer confirmed – need one more Trophy Display set-up – need one volunteer 50/50 tickets – need two volunteers Vehicle to transport folks to Towne Center for a little shopping – one volunteer con-

firmed Caricaturist – still need help locating DJ/Announcer – the Club has equipment, we need a volunteer to spin a few tunes and

to make announcements – Important! Lunch – Richie will again be cooking barbecue – Garrett to assist Trophies have been chosen, and I can pretty much guarantee that you don’t have one

like it – YET! I think you’ll be impressed, but you can’t win one if you don’t register you LBC.

You’ll see some fresh, new items this year, and I think you’ll be pleased

Some items that I’m looking for and will accept at any time

Like new picnic baskets – if you’ve got a clean picnic basket that you don’t use, why not donate it? I’ve got a great plan for them.

Silent auction Friday night at the Welcome Reception – we have a few art pieces and would love to have a few more. If you’ve got a nice piece of auto related art, even if it’s just a great framed poster, why not donate it?

I will have my car with a big trunk at the Cars & Coffee as well as the monthly meet-ings so if you have any items for the Friday or Saturday silent auctions, including car parts (please label them as I don’t always know my car parts) or any other items that you want to donate for raffle prizes, please bring them. I’m already accumulating items for the Show so I’m happy to take them off your hands early.

I’m very excited that we’re already enjoying interest from other clubs planning to join us so help me make this a special BCD for all to enjoy.

I look forward to seeing you at the Mount Pleasant Cars & Coffee, and come on out to join us at the August meeting and share a little something about yourself with us. We’d love to Get to Know You better!

It is warm enough for everyone? I now have proof positive that British Car Club folks truly love everything about their cars, includ-ing driving top-down in 90+ temperatures. There were several who showed up for our July 9th meeting, hot but smiling, parched (and maybe a little scorched) and ready for some ice cold ice tea, accom-

panied by some delicious barbecue.

With no Prez in sight (he and his lovely wife were enjoy a trip abroad) as was our trusty Secretary Mert so there was no one to take notes or to keep us all straight, but we still managed to have a very enjoyable meeting.

Michael Carnell, who we rarely see, graced us with a visit which was fun. His visit brought to mind some of the fun events that members have participated in through the years including blindfold rallies, autocross events, a night rally, scavenger hunts, etc. Some of us who have been in the Club for a number of years along with Michael, including Jack and myself, Ron Neal and Darryl Beech who were at the meeting, had a good time relaying memories of events past and had a good laugh at many of the shenanigans.

We had some newer members join us – Fred and Jen Motter, and while we were talking about the autocross events, Jen told us about when she entered her 1958 MGA in a couple of rallies a few years ago. I’m not familiar with much about MGAs except her beautiful lines, but Jen told us about one time when she couldn’t get the car started and called on her brother for assistance. He asked her if she had tried the crank, and she was totally unaware that the car had a hand crank in the front. As she told us, she learned something new that day which came in handy a time or two later on.

It was great fun listening to Jen share her experiences with us, and I could see the twinkle in her eyes as she reminisced. I think maybe there are a lot more stories to be shared! Perhaps she might indulge us and send one to our wonderful Editor.

I asked Darryl if the SCCA was still holding autocross events in our area, and he said he would get infor-mation to me (or the Editor) for inclusion in The Windscreen. Darryl also said he would provide info to the Club, for anyone with teens, about the teen driving program that the SCCA holds. It sounds very worth-while!

Jack shared several tech tips with the group and even provided visual aids so the amateurs in the group (me), would know exactly what parts he was talking about. He gave detailed information on how to avoid, locate and fix several common problems that we may encounter with our little Brit cars, and in general how to be proactive with your car maintenance. It was very informative, and because of Jack’s sense of humor, it was entertaining as well.

A big thank you to Michael Rains for the great job he’s doing arranging meeting places and other events for us all to enjoy. At the Three Little Pigs BBQ, we had our own meeting room, and I understand the food was very good. If you enjoyed this venue and would like to see us meet there again, please let Michael know. I’m sure he would appreciate some positive feedback on our meeting venues and probably some assistance as well. Contact Michael with some suggested meeting places that you’ve enjoyed and think would be great for us.

I want to backtrack for just a moment to Michael Carnell being at the meeting. Of course as usual, I put him on the spot (which is never an easy thing to do) and made him tell the group about how the Club got started.

As most of you know, Jack and I have been talking up the Club, its members and our community involvement for well over 20 years, but didn’t know until this meeting that when Michael, Gene Gillenwater, Don Brown, Mike O’Flaherty, and a few others first started out that the intent of the Club was Three Cs – Cars, Cama-raderie, and Community!

You can only imagine how thrilled and proud I was to find out that what we had been sharing about the Club all these years was exactly what the original intent was! That may sound hokie to some, but the Club, the friends we’ve made through the years, and the events that we’ve participated in have been very special to Jack and me.

Thank you Michael for starting such a great Club that we all enjoy today and will strive to keep growing while maintaining your original intent.

Diane

The story of our Alden The story of the Alden motorcar start-ed in the late 1970's with my father, Al Bennett. After retiring from his position as Vice President of Engineer-ing for Burger King, my dad decided that he would cross a major item off of his "bucket list" - he would produce a low volume sports car. Naturally, he did not have the re-sources to design, engineer, and manufacture an automobile from scratch, so he began looking at other options. He came across a car called the Merlin TF, made by Thorough-bred Cars in Essex England. He liked the retro sports car lines, and the reliable Ford drivetrain. In short order he had made an agreement to bring the car to the States, convert it to left-hand drive, certify and market the car as an Alden in this coun-try. Thus Bennett Motorcars Inc was born in 1980. Manufacturing of the car at a small facility in Lakeland Florida proceeded slowly but surely. Marketing of the car was primarily through specialty magazines and car shows. From the Alden display at the New York Auto Show in 1982, a $5000 deposit was taken toward the purchase price of $14,900. This order was for a beige Alden with black interior, similar to the Alden on display at the show. Work was started on this car a month after the show, and soon a rolling chassis, including the body and drivetrain was complete. Unfortunately, the woman who had ordered the car lost interest, and work on the car was halted. Ultimately it was moved to a field in back of the factory as work continued on other cars. Having had modest success as a car manufacturer, the company was closed in the mid 1980's, and my father moved on to other "bucket list" items. The assets were sold, and my brother bought the unfinished Alden which had been left in the back lot. It was then stored in his yard for 28 years. Fast forward to 2014. My son Zachry noticed an ad in Ebay for an interesting sports car for sale. Though the seller did not list a maufacturer or model, he recognized it as an Alden. It was an estate sale, with the car being in poor condition, needing a total restoration. He emailed me asking if we should bid on it, just to get it back into our family. Bidding was stalled at just over $7000. I spoke with my brother about it. Hav-ing worked with my father at the company years before, he was very familiar with the exact car. But he made me an offer I could not refuse. Rather than spending the money on the Ebay car, he would sell me the "new" Alden which had been sitting in his back yard for only $2000. Deal!!!! A quick trip to Florida with A U-haul trailer and the car was sitting in my garage. And then I discovered how bad it is to leave a car sitting outside in Florida for 32 years. Virtually everything on the car needed attention. I started having second thoughts about talking on a restoration as intensive as this. But my father, now in his late eighties, was very excited about having another Alden in the family, the perfect bookend to his 1980 Alden, which was the first one built, and had been the car displayed at the NY Auto Show so many years before.

The story of our Alden (continued) So over the next 18 months, I went through everything on the car, and am quite pleased with the results. On Thanksgiving weekend of 2015 we brought my Dad up from Florida to see the car. It was really touching to see how much it meant to him to see this car finally finished. He was beaming when I took him for a ride in this last Alden ever made. It may have taken 33 years to build, but the results speak for themselves. We took a picture of my father and my son sitting in the car, in the same pose as a 1992 picture taken of the two of them in Dad's Alden. Now I own a true triple/double car. It took triple the time and double the money I orig-inally thought the restoration would require. And was it worth it? Absolutely. A great bonding experience between my father (Alden H. Bennett), my son (Zachry Alden Ben-nett), and myself (Mark Alden Bennett). This is a car which was destined to remain in the family.

Thank you Mark for sharing your story.

Does your car have an interesting his-tory or do you have an interesting story to share, write it up and sent it to The Windscreen editor.

STICKY TOFFEE PUDDING RECIPE

Directions Preheat the oven to 350F. Grease and flour 8 4oz ramekins and line the bottom of

each with parchment paper cut to fit. Line the bottom of a large roasting pan with a clean dish towel and set the ramekins over the dish towel. Bring a large kettle or saucepan of water to a boil over high heat.

Combine half the dates with the coffee and baking soda in a large glass measuring cup and soak for 5 minutes. Drain the dates, reserving the liquid, and transfer the dates to a medium bowl. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour , bak-ing powder, and salt.

Process the remaining unsoaked dates and brown sugar in a food processor until just blended (about 5 1-second pulses). Add the reserved soaking liquid, eggs, and va-nilla, and process until smooth (about 5 seconds). With the food processor or blender running, pour the melded butter in in a steady stream. transfer the mix-ture to the bowl with the soaked dates.

Gently stir the dry mixture into the wet mixture until just combined. Distribute the batter evenly among the prepared ramekins. Fill the roasting pan with enough boiling water to come halfway up the sides of the ramekins. Cover the pan tightly with aluminum foil. Bake for about 40 minutes, or until the cakes are puffed. Im-mediately remove the ramekins from the water and cool on a wire rack for 10 minutes.

While the cakes are cooking, melt the butter for the toffee sauce in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Whisk in the brown sugar until smooth. Continue to cook, stirring occasionally, until the sugar is dissolved and the mixture look puffy (about 3-4 minutes). Slowly pour in the ream and rum, and whisk to combine. re-duce the heat an simmer until frothy (about 3 minutes). Remove from the heat and stir in the lemon juice.

To serve, invert the ramekins onto a plate or shallow bowl. Remove the ramekin, peel off the parchment paper, and divide the toffee sauce evenly among the cakes. Serve immediately with a custard or vanilla ice cream.

Enjoy!
