Prez Talk: A Message from Wyoming ARMA President
Welcome! Welcome eve-
ryone to our 2016-2017
Chapter year!
As the current webmaster,
I am happy to take on an
additional new role as our
chapter president. I have
experience in Information
Technology and Content
Management. I currently
serve as a moderator be-
tween both departments. I
enjoy playing video games,
attending PAX conven-
tions/comic cons, puzzles
and hanging out with my
boyfriend and our dog.
Our new chapter year
promises lots of great edu-
cational events, activities,
and opportunities. Please
join me in welcoming our
2016-2017 Board of Direc-
tors: Carolynn Coy-
President and Webmaster;
Pat Newbern-Chairperson
of the Board; April Peregoy-
Vice-President and Newslet-
ter Editor; Barb Thomasee-
Treasurer; and Janie Wait-
Membership Chairman.
Since our June 2015-
2016 Year End Meeting and
Awards Dinner, we have
completed and submitted
our 990 along with sending
two representatives to the
Great Lakes and Midwest
Rocky Mountain Regional
Leadership Conference.
Conference attendees for
the Wyoming chapter this
year were April Peregoy and
myself. April and I present-
ed a conference review to
our board that was full of
updates from ARMA Inter-
national Board of Directors,
leadership resources, and
breakouts and idea sharing.
Our main goal this year is
to increase and diversify our
membership. Keep in mind
we are not just a chapter for
records managers. Anyone
who handles an electronic
document or a piece of pa-
per has a role in managing
information. They could be
your legal counsel, server
admin, accounts payable
clerk, administrative assis-
tant, engineer, etc. So we are
asking you to look around
your office, your community
or your networking group
and encourage one person
to read our newsletter and
website, attend a chapter
meeting or become a chap-
ter member.
We also have a few posi-
tion still open on the 2016-
2017 Chapter Board. Our
Secretary, Education, and
Carolynn Coy, President of
Wyoming Chapter of ARMA

The Wyoming Chapter of ARMA will meet Tuesday, September 20 from 11:30 a.m. to
12:30 p.m. at the Public Service Commission Library, located at 2515 Warren Ave—
Suite 300 in Cheyenne. The meeting will feature the recorded AIIM webinar session,
“Learn How to Put the Date You’re Already Capturing to Work for You,” facilitated by
Harvey Spencer, President of Harvey Spencer Associates and David Jenness, Market
Segment Manager of IBM.
The September chapter meeting will also be made available to remote attendees
through GoToMeeting. If you would like to attend, please let us know by sending an
email to [email protected]. You will then receive a reply with the remote attendee
information.
Webinar Description: We know that "capture" is more than just about paper and it
is this fundamental change to our underlying assumptions that allows us to unlock
greater value. There is much information already contained in our systems and being
submitted on a daily basis. You’re already gathering the information, but it’s time that
you learn how you can get value out of it.
Join leading analyst Harvey Spencer as he discusses how to gain deeper insight into
the information included on the documents already being shared with your company.
You’ll learn how:
You can extract even more knowledge from the documents submitted
To capture valuable data from website visits and web searches
Intelligent capture will help you understand all the data on any document
Most importantly, you learn how intelligent document capture can help you maximize
all this data and information for better processes, better ROI, and better experiences.
Exciting times are ahead!

Session Title: Making Data
Classification Work For Your
Program
Session Code: CF15-4330
Presenter: Deborah Butler
Summary: Data classifica-
tion is a shorthand way to de-
scribe certain attributes of in-
formation. It helps information
managers and users stay on the
same page, which, in turn,
results in increased data pro-
tection and more efficient rec-
ords management. In this high-
ly interactive session, you will
learn to develop a rudimentary
data classification scheme and
to analyze the deployment of a
labeling tool and other related
technologies.

ARMA International’s Web Sessions of the Month gets a makeover with lots of new enhancements!
Accessing ARMA International’s Web Session of the Month
1. Go to www.arma.org and log into your My ARMA account
using your current login information.
2. After you have successfully logged in, select the My Profile tab.
3. Scroll down until you see the Chapter Memberships section.
4. Click on the link located underneath the Education Link head-
line within the Chapter Memberships section. (Link title starts
with “Session of the Month:”) This will take you to the Chapter
Resources page.
5. Use the Search functionality to find your chapter’s Session of
the Month by typing in the title or the 8-digit alphanumeric
code.
Just in time for the new
chapter year, ARMA Interna-
tional has added enhance-
ments to its Session of the
Month feature.
The feature now includes
sessions from previous AR-
MA Live! conferences. In
addition to the recorded ses-
sions, there are also job aids,
discussion questions, and ad-
ditional resources available
for many of the sessions.
As before, ARMA members
can access the Session of the
Month by logging into their
accounts and clicking the Ed-
ucation Link on their My Pro-
file tab (see instructions be-
low). At this point, however,
they will be taken to the new
ARMA Chapter Resources
page. This page actually con-
tains all the available web
sessions and associated mate-
rials offered by ARMA.
In order to find the session
your chapter leaders have
selected for the month, you’ll
need to know the title. It is
also very helpful to have the 8
-digit alphanumeric code lo-
cated in front of the title. Us-
ing the search functionality,
search for that code and you’ll
find your session video as
well any additional content
related to your sessions such
as job aids, discussion ques-
tions, etc.

Coy, Peregoy attend 2016 Great Lakes & Midwest/Rocky Mountain Leadership Conference
Chapter board members throughout the Great Lakes, Midwest and Rocky Moun-tain regions came together for two days of networking and leadership development at ARMA International’s 2016 Great Lakes & Mid-west/Rocky Mountain Re-gional Leadership Conference this year. The conference took place July 22 and 23 at the Hilton Minneap-olis/Bloomington in Minne-apolis, Min. Attending for the Wyoming Chapter was presi-dent and webmaster Carolynn Coy as well as vice-president and newsletter chair April Peregoy.
The purpose of the leader-ship conference is to give the attendees the opportunity to network and build relation-ships with other ARMA board members in their re-gion. It also aims to develop their leadership strategies and skills.
The chapter leaders re-ceived updates on new initia-
tives and activities the ARMA Board of Directors and its CEO are currently working on (See the story on page 7 for more details). ARMA In-ternational membership man-ager Heather Lehman showed a video detailing what’s new at ARMA’s Membership De-partment and what the team is currently working on for
next year. The video can be viewed in its entirety at the following link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hjt4IEV_ouI.
There was also a presenta-tion given by Shawn Gerlach on the ARMA International Educational Foundation (AIEF). The purpose of AIEF is to provide scholar-ship and research funding for records and information man-agement. It provides Access Leadership scholarships as well as scholarships for those in a graduate program or seeking the RIM certificate.
In addition to learning about what’s going on at AR-MA International Headquar-ters, attendees at the confer-ence received training on their respective board posi-tions, learned how to create a strategic plan for their chap-ters, discussed recruitment and educational programming issues and ideas, and learned how to recognize and prevent burnout of board members. They also participated in a
lively panel discussion about the different leadership styles favored by each generation that is now in the work force: Baby Boomers, Gen Xers and Millennials.
Conference attendees were also given the opportunity to network and have some fun while in Minneapolis. The evening before the first day of the conference, attendees were treated to dinner and drinks at a local restaurant. The next evening, ARMA took them to the Mall of America for an amusing even-ing of food, arcade games and bowling.
Coy and Peregoy agreed the conference was both educa-tional and fun.
“It was wonderful to meet other records managers from around the region and find out what their chapters are doing, “ Peregoy said. “I learned a lot and I think we took away some good ideas that we can hopefully imple-ment in the Wyoming chap-ter.”

Following a couple years of
financial hardship, ARMA Inter-
national’s Board of Directors is
working to transform the organi-
zation, according to its CEO
Bob Baird. Baird gave an update
on the board and its current
projects and initiatives during
the 2016 Great Lakes & Mid-
west/Rocky Mountain Regional
Leadership Conference, held July
22-23 in Minneapolis, Min.
Baird explained the financial hardships are a result of a drop in membership from 10,000 to 8,000 members over the last four years. One of the biggest causes of the membership drop is the fact that its members are getting older and not enough young professionals are joining to fill their shoes. To emphasize this point, Baird provided the follow-ing statistics that came from a recent ARMA membership sur-vey:
The average age of ARMA members is 59
46% of members are baby boomers, 41% Gen X, and 13% millennials (Which means 87% of members are over the age of 35)
45% of members have been in the industry for 15 years or more
As a result of these statistics, the ARMA Board of Directors is initiating #ARMANextGen – a plan to transform the following 5 components of the organiza-tion:
1. Membership—A Young Professionals Advisory Group was started to find out what millennials want out of their memberships. What they found is most of them want to meet older people who can help them get jobs. Therefore, the board is working to modify the membership model on the student end and the
retiree end. Baird says he wants to reduce retiree membership to $50/year (and if he has his way, it will be free if they agree to be mentors).
2. Technology—There will be a complete overhaul of the web-site as money allows
3. Training—Working to get away from the “Sage on a Stage” approach and make the trainings more interactive. New training initiatives include:
ARMA inDepth: A page on the website that offers 12-20 best resources regarding specific topics in infor-mation governance. http://www.arma.org/indepth
Sessions of the Month: For the upcoming year, new ARMA webinars will re-place the MER ones. They will also include handouts.
ARMA Live! Virtual Con-
ference: The next one will take place August 16. Last year there were more at-tendees for the virtual con-ference than the actual con-ference. It is free for profes-sional members.
ARMA Live! San Antonio: This year, it will feature a mentorship program for new attendees. They will be matched with an experi-enced attendee to advise them on what sessions to attend.
4. Chapters—ARMA is work-ing to create more connec-tions between chapters so they can share ideas and discuss similar issues. This will include monthly calls with chapter leaders and promoting mentorship within chapters for new members.
5. Value—ARMA wants mem-bers to get more return on their investment (ROI). They plan to do this by
providing more free re-sources and tools.
Presenting on behalf of the Board of Directors, past presi-dent Peter Kurilecz focused on the board’s accomplishments over the past year. They includ-ed:
Hiring a new CEO (Bob Baird) in June 2015
Revamping their strategic
planning process
A mutual agreement with ARMA International Edu-cation Foundation to let the foundation stand on its own
Reviewing and revamping the ARMA International Awards
Selecting a new outside di-rector (Mark Levin) and a new Young Professional outside director (Ryan Zim)

Kristy Anderson, a 22-year
member of the Wyoming Chapter
of ARMA, recently retired from
her position as deputy city clerk at
the City of Cheyenne. The chapter
is grateful to Kristy for her years of
service to our organization and
wishes her a very happy retirement!
The following is a summary of
Kristy’s career and her involvement
in ARMA as told in her words.
Prior to my career with the
City of Cheyenne, I received
my bachelor’s degree in social
work from the University of
Wyoming with a minor in
psychology. The month I
graduated, my husband and I
moved to a ranch out of
McFadden where I was able
to use my new degree coun-
seling cows. I also substitute-
taught at various schools, in-
cluding a one-room school-
house, in vicinities such as
Elk Mountain, Hannah, Rock
River, Bosler and McFadden.
We left the ranch after sev-
en years for my husband to
attend law school, and my
career took a turn. I got into
the legal field as a paralegal.
That job and others gave me
many of the skills necessary
for the deputy city clerk posi-
tion at the City of Cheyenne,
where I held the position for
22 years.
I joined ARMA my first
month in the position. I’ve
met the most wonderful peo-
ple through ARMA where we
could share records infor-
mation and figure out issues
we may have or assist with
knowledge in the ever-
changing world of records.
I have held every position
but secretary on the Wyoming
Chapter of ARMA Board,
and sometimes as many as
three positions at once! I
served on numerous commit-
tees and was the seminar
chair for about ten years. I
also was a member of the
International Institute of Mu-
nicipal Clerks (IIMC), Wyo-
ming Association of Clerks
and Treasurers (WAMCAT),
National Association of Gov-
ernment Webmasters
(NAGW), and Cheyenne
Capital Chorale where I held
numerous board positions
and/or served on various
committees.
On my new adventure
called “retirement,” I am
looking forward to traveling a
lot more with my husband
(who is also retired), camping,
boating, paddle boarding,
skiing, hiking, snowshoeing
and whatever else we decide
to undertake. But I am espe-
cially excited about spending
lots more time with my son,
Sean, and daughter, Erica,
and their families, as well as
my three precious grandchil-
dren: Evan, 4; Peyton, 3, and
Graham, 15 months. That
means road trips to Kalispell,
Montana and lots of trips
over the hill to Laramie.
I hope to continue seeing
many of my ARMA friends
wherever our paths may cross
next. It truly has been a joy
being a part of this organiza-
tion.

Wyoming Chapter of
ARMA board members met
Tuesday, May 24 at the Wyo-
ming Department of Trans-
portation office in Cheyenne.
Board members in attendance
included President Pat New-
bern, Newsletter Editor April
Peregoy, Chairperson Barbara
Thomassee, Membership
Chair Janie Wait and Web-
master Carolynn Coy.
Newbern called the meet-
ing to order at 11:35 a.m. Per-
egoy moved to accept the
April board meeting minutes
as well as the May general
meeting minutes. It was se-
conded by Wait, and the mo-
tion was approved.
Treasurer’s Report
Thomasee presented the
Treasurer’s Report for April
and May She explained there
were some checks that did
not clear in April, so they
were pushed back to the next
month’s report. She also not-
ed the May report is not yet
reconciled with the bank
statement because the state-
ment will not be sent until
June 7.
Committee Reports
Membership chair Janie
Wait said she sent out a fol-
low-up email to attendees of
the 2016 Spring Seminar in
March. However, she did not
receive any responses. Wait
also mentioned that she still
isn’t getting the chapter mem-
bership list from headquar-
ters, and she is going to check
into this. The chapter current-
ly has 22 members.
For the education report,
Newbern said the chapter has
received 11 applications for
the Vicki Carroll Memorial
Scholarship; however, only
two of those applications
meet the specified criteria.
Regarding programs, the
announcement was made that
the chapter’s Annual Year-
end Banquet and Awards will
be at 6 p.m. Thursday, June 2
at the Wyoming Rib & Chop
House in Cheyenne. New-
bern asked the other board
members if they have any
ideas for next year. Coy said
the suggestion had been made
to her to do one on Commu-
nity Action. Newbern en-
couraged them to think about
program ideas over the sum-
mer break. She added the
chapter didn’t do anything
this year for Records & Infor-
mation Management Month
(RIM) which was in April,
and she hopes something can
be done next year.
Newsletter editor April
Peregoy said she plans on
attending the Year-End Ban-
quet so she can take pictures
for the next issue of the
newsletter. She added she
would like to get everything
in for that issue by Monday,
June 6. Newbern said she
talked to Paula Sutton of the
Northern Colorado Chapter
about the Newsletter of the
Year Award since Sutton was
on the committee. She told
Newbern the committee nev-
er received the Wyoming
chapter’s submissions for
Newsletter of the Year. New-
bern suggested this year that
Peregoy send both hard copy
and electronic submissions.
Peregoy asked the other
board members to review the
year’s issues and give her sug-
gestions on which ones to
submit.
Webmaster Carolynn Coy
had nothing to report.
Old Business
Thomasee reported the
post office box rental is due
June 30, but cannot be paid
before May 30. She said she
will pay for it on May 31.
Newbern suggested the
chapter give $15 in cash to all
members who attend the
Year-end Banquet. That way,
the chapter can close out its
books without having any
outstanding checks when the
audit is done in July. The
board unanimously agreed.
Also regarding the banquet,
Thomasee said she still needs
nominations for Member of
the Year and Leader of the
Year Awards. It was also not-
ed Paula Sutton from the
Northern Colorado Chapter
will be coming to the banquet
to swear in next year’s Board
of Directors.
Coy reported over half of
the chapter’s members voted
in the board elections. She
added there were write-ins,
but none of the write-ins met
the established criteria.
Newbern announced the
Midwest/Rocky Mountain
Regional Leadership Confer-
ence will be July 21-23 in
Minneapolis, Min. As next
year’s president and vice-
president, Coy and Peregoy
have been asked if they could
attend the conference. Coy
said she thinks she can go and
Peregoy said she is still check-
ing into it. They will work
together on making the ar-
rangements for the trip and
get the expenses to Thomasee
for payment.
New Business
The ARMA International
Conference will be in San
Antonio in late September.
The chapter might be able to
send Coy if she can go. The
conference is expected to
feature a new mentorship
program. Newbern men-
tioned the chapter has its own
mentor, Janie Wait. She is full
of knowledge on all aspects
of recordkeeping.
Newbern said she had
recently been talking to Re-
gional Director Brian Stark
on the topics of board succes-
sion planning and leadership
burnout. Stark suggested the
board cut back on meetings if
needed to prevent burnout.
Thomasee added that maybe
the board doesn’t necessarily
have to have board and gen-
eral meetings every month.
Newbern said she had in-
quired about whether other
chapters were having this is-
sue and was told the North-
ern Colorado Chapter doesn’t
have very many meetings and
it’s worked out for them. It
was decided that the board
should revisit this idea at its
first meeting next chapter
year.

President encourages membership involvement
Program positions are still
open. If you would be inter-
ested in serving on the board
in any of these positions,
please get in touch with a
member of the board at your
earliest convenience. Do not
let your location in the state
deter you from taking the
opportunity to serve on our
Board. April, Janie and I are
located in different areas of
the state and are still able to
hold multiple positions.
Please remember the AR-
MA International Conference
in San Antonio, Texas is right
around the corner on Septem-
ber 25-27th at the San Anto-
nio Convention Center. I
have attended the annual
PAX South Convention in
San Antonio the past two
years. It is an awesome place
and I am sure going to the
conference will make your
trip even better.
If you can attend, but have
not yet registered for the con-
ference, it’s not too late. The
61st ARMA International
Conference & Expo is the
place to find real time solu-
tions, network, learn best
practices, and get up to date
information on up and com-
ing technologies
In order to keep our chap-
ter fun and interactive, in ad-
dition to increasing member-
ship and participation, we rely
on our chapter members and
future board members to par-
ticipate. We are working on
some awesome chapter ideas
for the upcoming year. I en-
courage you to get involved
and provide continued feed-
back via our membership sur-
vey, volunteering on the
board, attending chapter
meetings, visiting our website,
reading the newsletter, etc.
Here’s to a good year!

Record Management University announces
Fall 2016 Semester: Inventors & Innovators!
Fall 2016 Class Listing
Attracting Allies and Evangelists: The Gutenberg class (September 20, 2016)
Marketing RM for organizational acceptance and adoption. RMU's class leading up to the ARMA national conference
in San Antonio. In this session we will examine ways to promote the benefits of records management so that you get organization-
al buy-in, even if unique approaches need to be invented. Without buy-in, acceptance and adoption, the infor-mation in the next five RMU sessions become less important since you probably won't have a job.
A Clear View of the Task: The Katherine Blodgett class (October 4, 2016)
Establishing File Plans and Categories. The success of your records management efforts require a well defined File Plan and associated Categories (Six
enough, twelve too many?). How do you implement a balanced category strategy so that they are meaningful and not burdensome to the user community? Do we need to invent an approach beyond Capstone, Capstone Plus, Big Bucket or infinite granularity to meet regulations?
Simplicity Versus Complexity: The Rube Goldberg class (October 18, 2016)
Dealing with the layers and intricacies of integrated RM and existing information silos
Organizations have struggled in their efforts to consolidate records management into a single solution. There are a
lot of convoluted and overly sophisticated approaches that eventually become very unwieldy and eventually fail.
We will explore the challenges of integrating disparate information silos and simplifying the effort while reducing
the risk of failure.
Secure and Unsecure Environments: The Hedy Lamar class (November 1, 2016)
Formalizing, fulfilling, tracking and auditing requests for physical and electronic records
Now that you have the records store under control, how do you manage access and prevent the propagation of
secondary and tertiary copies of records and jeopardize the disposition schema? How will you track requests fo
records retrieval and distribution in your organization, and audit that activity?
How Big Will Big Be? The Hans Lippershey Class (November 15, 2016)
Looking into the future of RM
The computer industry keeps inventing new terms to label data beyond gigabytes, terabytes and petabytes. How
much data is your organization going to be able to realistically handle and at what cost? Where are all these bits
and bytes originating from and how will your organization capture, manage and destroy or transfer at disposition
time?
What is the Measurement of RM Success: The John Vincent Atanasoff class (December 6, 2016)
There are inventions that measure almost everything that occurs in the universe. How about one that
measures records management success
So how do you know if your records management efforts are being successful? Unfortunately, in many cases you
are so focused on your day-to-day RM job just to keep your head above water, there is no time to invent a tool to
help you evaluate your efforts. And, you need one in order to come full circle with this semester's first class:
