Targoviste City issituated 80 Km N-W of Bucharest, Romania' scapital, and 300 Km of Constanta, the mainRomanian harbor at

the Black Sea.

Targoviste is thestarting point towardsseveral routes of particular value forRomanian tourism.

HISTORY

The first documentaryattestation of the formalcapital city is from 1396 left bythe German crusader JohannSchiltberger. The first officialdocument was written onpaper by Mircea the Older(1386-1418) addressed toTismana Monastery. Vlad theImpaler was enthroned here in1456.

Between 1396-1714it used to be the capital of Romanian Country startingwith Vlad the Impaler reign.

HISTORY

In 1499 the voivode Radu theGreat rebuilt Saint Nicolae on Hillchurch, today known as DealuMonastery. The church was painted in1514 during the reign of NeagoeBasarab. Until 1600 when Michael theBrave succeeded in achieving the first Union of the Romanian principalities,Targoviste remains the capital of Romanian Country.

Matei Basarab (1632-1654)reinforced the walls of the city,

repaired the old churches and built new ones. Until 1659 Trgovi te wasthe capital city of Wallachia and until1714 was the crown residence. TudorVladimirescu, the leader of therevolution from 1821 was executed

here in front of the Mitropoliei church.

CULTURE

Targoviste was one of thegreat cultural centres of theRomanian and south-east EuropeanMiddle Ages.

The first books in Slavonicand then in Latin, were printed, the

town being one of the birth placesof the Romanian literary language.

Important documents canbe seen at the Museum of Archeology, the Museum of History,The Museum of Printing, The

Museum of the WritersThe House of Trade

Unions, The House of Youth, TheHouse of Culture are places for thedissemination of culture in the city.
