VISIONSTATEMENT
Pride Calgary will workto attain acceptance andequality for Calgary’s LGBTAcommunity through creating asafeandfunPrideEventwhereall Calgarians are welcome.
STONEWALL againstagovernment-sponsoredsystemthatpersecutedsexualminorities.Today Stonewall has become thedefining event that marked the start ofthe gay rights movement around theworld.
pride week is an annual celebration within calgary’s gay/lesbian/bisexual/two-Spirited and transgendered communities. like pride celebrations around the world, calgary’s pride week commemorates the 1969 Stonewall riots.
calgary has celebrated pride since 1990. that first rally - minus a parade, which was believed to be too radical even for 1990s calgary - attracted 192 people. Some participants even wore paper bags over their heads.Since 1990, calgary’s population has grown by over 21% to more than a million people. this influx has changed the soul of calgary, bringing more diversity and culture along with the people.today our gltba community has over 60 volunteer-operated and self-funded community organizations, as well as a plethora of queer and ally owned businesses. our city and community continues to grow and flourish, and we look forward to a vibrant future, where diversity is not only accepted, but also celebrated.
