LOVER, PLEASE DON’T FIGHT
It is singularly appropriate that Mae West
should be recording an album of rock ’n’ roll
hits. Miss West has been rocking ’em in their
seats, and rolling ’em in the aisles since long
before the term rock ’n’ roll was invented.
Miss West is one of the great show business
figures — and you can figure that statement in
more ways than one. Her luscious proportions
(plus the fact that her tremendous box-office
popularity saved 1700 Paramount theatres from shuttering in the thirties) inspired
British aviators to name their inflatable life jackets the “Mae West”. That hardly begins to tell the story of the inspiration for
which Mae has been directly responsible.
She was a glamorous headliner nonpareil
in big time vaudeville. Mae is the
incomparable, the original, the one-and-only
“Diamond Lil.” She made the Broadway
stage sizzle with her galvanic performances
in “Diamond Lil,” and other plays including
“Sex,” “The Wicked Age” and “Catherine
Was Great.”
Mae brought people back to the movie box office during the worst years of the
Depression with her racy, rollicking
portrayals of free-hearted, generous ladies. As Hollywood and the world’s most puissant
sex symbol, she became and remained one of the biggest moneymaking stars of all time. Her appearances today in television, theatres,
clubs, and other entertainment media
guarantee overwhelming public response.
Throughout her career, she introduced a
series of memorable songs in films, on
records, and the Broadway and night club stages. Hers was the first and still unsurpassed
version of “Frankie and Johnny” to be heard
on the screen. “My Old Flame” was composed
especially for her. She is also indelibly
associated with such musical creations as “Easy Rider,” “I Like a Man What Takes His
Time,” “I Like To Do All Day What I Do All
Night,’ and “He’s a Bad, Bad Man (But He’s
Good For Me).”
In this album, Mae rocks and rolls to an
especially selected repertoire of the latest
rock ’n’ roll hits, backed by the dynamic young group Somebody’s Chyldren.
The voice is torrid. Her beat is sensational.
Her rhythm is like no other rhythm in the
business. When she sings these emotional
lyrics, they take on deep and feelingful
meaning. It’s as though Mae was made for rock ’n’ roll, and rock ’n’ roll made for Mae.
