India to assist in the “Uttrakhand Disaster ReliefActivities”, we immediately offered him £500 donationfor this flood relief mission.

On his return, he attended the Ealing Lion’s businessmeeting of 5th February 2014. He gave a fascinatingand touching account of his participation in the reliefactivities near Rishikesh. He added that Lions Club ofRishikesh Divine was able to make good use of ourdonation. The Food Cupboard is a charitableorganisation based at St Mary’s

Church, Bletchley, which provides foodpackages for families who have beenhighlighted by social services asvulnerable and struggling to afford food. The Lions Club of Bletchley has beensupporting the Food Cupboard for thelast four years.

Before Christmas shoppers at thelocal Tesco store were encouraged by theLions Club of Bletchley to help fill atrolley of food to support the charity.Ten trolleys were filled and £460 wasraised with some shoppers donating fullbags of shopping while others gavefinancial gifts. The Club also gave £500to the Food Cupboard to enable them tobuild up their stock.

Mike Bartlett, 68, secretary of theClub and the event organiser said: “Withthe ten trolleys and the financial gifts wehelped more than 50 families. Volunteersenjoyed the day as it is one of ourfavourite events that gets us involvedwith the people in Bletchley. We canremind the community what we do andwhy we are here.”

The London Westminster Lions Club has committed itself to helpingfamilies in need in Westminster, by regularly collecting food at the

Sainsbury’s Market in Pimlico and donating the food to the local foodbank inVauxhall (a Trusell Trust charity). Most recently, club members working from 9am to 6 pm, requested non-perishable food items such as tinned fruit, meatand vegetables, dried foodsand rice from customers on 7 December 2013 and15 February 2014. We had the support and cooperation of Sainsbury staffmembers. The response from the customers was overwhelming. They werevery generous with their donations and in a few exceptional cases individualsdonated a trolley load of food!

On 7 December,we collected 694 kg offood, which wasenough to feed 1,000families. On 15February, we collected299 kg of food, which will feedapproximately 500families. Persons arevetted by socialservices or charities to qualify for fooddonations, so thatthose are trulyin needbenefit. It has beenestimated that500,000 people in the

UK rely on the food banks, of which 35% are children.Through our action, the customers of Sainsbury’s know who the Lions are

and what we do, which has helped to promote Lionism in the community.Several younger persons have enquired about the club and we have invitedthem to our monthly club meeting. If you club is looking for a positive and supporting project for families inneed, collecting food for your local food bank is a rewarding experience.Perhaps, if enough clubs became involved, we could make this a recognisedDistrict project.

You can get more than tea, sandwichesand entertainment when you attend a

Lions Senior Citizens Party at the HarrowLeisure centre with Kenton Lions.

Vera who is 85 years young has enjoyedthe event every year for the past 6 years, sponsored by Kenton Lions, with a group ofSeniors. Last year was the highlight whenshe met Joe, a Chelsea pensioner who waswith the Westminster Lions. They chattedaway as if they were lifelong friends andwere seen gazing into each other's eyes.

We hope they meet up again and wecan report our first senior citizens matchmaking success story sometime in thefuture.
