PRIEST RIVER ELEMENTARY NEWS From the Principal’s Desk February 28, 2020 LEAPYEAR It’s only once every four years that I cannot say February 28th is the last day of the month. Nevertheless, by Monday we will be entering March and I hope it does not come roaring in like a lion. Here at PRE we will be focusing on preparing for our Spring assess- ments. We are looking pretty impressive so far if our interim assessments are a good indicator, as they are designed to be. We all were fortunate to be able to watch the musical….Schoolhouse Rock on Thursday. Not only was it an enjoyable exposure to drama and music, but the songs were in and of themselves…. Lessons in various subjects. I had to laugh when some of the adults sitting around me were singing the lyrics right along with the performers. Many of us grew up with Schoolhouse Rock and it was great to watch our peers perform it. Monday we celebrate the birthday of Dr. Seuss with READ ACROSS AMERICA. You are invited to join us for green eggs and ham from 7:30 to 8:00 in the cafeteria (cost is $2.50) and then join your students in their classrooms for reading. Pajamas or Dr. Seuss character dress welcome. The Cat In The Hat will probably make an entrance, so come join us! Save March 12th for District Wide Family Fun Math Night. It’s only once every four years that I cannot say February 28th is the last day of the

month. Nevertheless, by Monday we will be entering March and I hope it does not come

roaring in like a lion. Here at PRE we will be focusing on preparing for our Spring assess-

Hello Priest River Elementary Students and Families!

It has been another fantastic week here at PRE. This week, I finished up my lessons on

Honesty in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade classes. We discussed what it means to show honesty and

hard it is to stop lying once you start making it a habit. We discussed how boasting is also a

form of lying and how hurtful it can be to make up stories about others. We talked about how

hard it is to gain back someone’s trust once you have lost it. In 3rd grade, we also discussed

how to recognize when you are the bully. The students need to remember the Spartan Way if

they are making someone not feel safe, they are not respecting them, being responsible or

being kind.

I hope that everyone has a wonderful, safe

and relaxing weekend!

Sincerely,

Ms. Mitchell

The Nurse’s Nook February is Dental Health Month. I try to visit with the classes about the impor tance of oral hygiene and

healthy snacks. Taking care of your teeth is about more than just maintaining a great-looking smile. It’s also

vital for your overall well-being, and if you neglect it, there can be serious medical consequences.

Infections can develop anywhere in your mouth-in the gums (periodontal) lips, palate, cheeks, and tongue, and within or below teeth (endodontic). A dental infection, within or below a tooth can be caused by tooth de-cay or a broken tooth that causes the pulp to become infected. The pulp is the part of the tooth that contains blood vessels, connective tissue, and large nerves. When an infection occurs, bacteria can move out of the tooth to the bone or tissue below forming a dental abscess. A dental infection can lead to sepsis, sometimes called blood poisoning, sepsis in the body is the deadly response to an infection. Sepsis kills and disables millions and requires early treatment for survival. Sepsis and Septic shock can result from anywhere in the body. An abscessed tooth is an oral infection that appears at the base or root of the tooth. The infection is usually the result of severe tooth decay and will manifest itself as a very bad toothache. These are some of the most com-mon symptoms: Fever, Pain when chewing, Bitter taste in the mouth Extremely bad breath, Swollen neck glands, red swollen gums or draining sores, swollen jaw. How Does an Abscessed Tooth Affect Your Overall Health? Any infection in the body is cause for alarm. An abscessed tooth represents a severe infection that is located in a part of your body that is uniquely located to spread its damage elsewhere. These are some of the potential consequences: loss of teeth, infection can spread to the brain through blood vessels and lead to a brain abscess and sinus infection. Bacteria can spread to the heart and cause endocarditis. An infection in the jaw called Lud-wig’s angina which can severely restrict the airways. And Sepsis as described above. Prevention is always the best medicine. You can generally avoid abscessed teeth entir ely if you brush and floss daily, and visit a dentist regularly. It can also help to regular ly use an antiseptic mouthwash. The goal is to ward off tooth decay, the primary cause of abscessed teeth. Make your students oral health a priority by encouraging brushing and flossing morning and night after eating, providing healthy snacks, decreasing sugary drinks and regular dental appointments.
