The Martial AgeIn the distant future, a rain of nuclear fire fell upon the world. Itwas the end of A.D. and the dawn of a new era: M.A.—the MartialAge. On Kenkisouken, the island of demons, a warrior seeks todethrone evil from ruling the world.

Lau WongYou take the role of LauWong, the celestialwarrior whodescends fromthe heavens to deliver the world fromdemons. Aided by the power of thetwin swords and an arsenal of powerfulmagic spells, Lau must seek out and destroyhis former ally, Rei Jenron.

Rei JenronRei is a master swordsman, like Lau.

He was once an ally, but after ascarring incident, he was drivenmad with rage. Thirsting for

revenge, he has now claimed thepower of demons and become

their lord.

Yohfa Lau encounters a mysteriousyoung woman who seems to havea connection with Rei. But is shea true human, or merely a celes-tial spirit?

Master Naguri

The teacher ofLau and Rei, Master

Naguri is skilled in martial artsand supports Lau on his quest. He main-tains a temple sanctuary where Lau cantrain and upgrade his abilities.

The DemonsDemons roam over Kenkisouken. Ranging in everyshape in size from the lowly Forsaken Soldier to the

mighty Overlord of Despair, they’re eviland bent on destruction.

Playing the GameBefore starting your quest, become familiar with the gamemechanics. On the screen, three gauges describe Lau’s condition.

GaugesOn the screen’s left side,your health is displayedas a vertical yellow bar.The gauge shudders inresponse when you getwounded.

The ring of blades inthe top left corner is theDefense Gauge. You auto-matically deflect attacks that strike from the front. Each deflectedattack subtracts one unit from this gauge. When all the blades aregone, you’re vulnerable. The gauge slowly refills when you’re notengaged in combat.

The purple gauge in the lower-left corner displays your magic.Magic power is consumed when you cast spells. Each physicalblow you score against an enemy replenishes a tiny amount ofyour magic.

When in combat, your enemy’s name and health appear in theupper-right corner. If the enemy has a Defense Gauge, that

is displayed as well.

Orbs

Orbs are everywhere. They appear when youdefeat monsters and when you smash opencontainers. They come in three colors. LargerOrbs are more valuable than smaller Orbs.

Blue Orbs are the mostcommon. Spend these toupgrade Lau’s stats. Yourcurrent stock of Blue Orbs isdisplayed in the screen’slower-right corner.

Yellow Orbs restore yourhealth. They are insidecrates. Occasionally, enemiesleave them behind whendefeated.

Crates also hold RedOrbs, which restore yourmagic. Sometimes enemiesleave these for you.

Coins

Throughout the isle of demons, hidden Coins are scattered.Collecting these unlocks bonus material in the Special Optionsmenu. The number of Coins concealed in the game depends onwhat difficulty level you play at. The higher the difficulty, themore Coins appear. Check the “Bonuses and Secrets” section for acomplete listing of the Coin locations.

The Temple

Between each stage, youreturn to the tranquilityof Master Naguri’sTemple. Here you canupgrade your stats byspending Blue Orbs.Practice your jumpingtechniques on the obsta-cles outside the Temple,or go inside and honeyour combat on the prac-tice dummy.

Advanced MovesLau’s advanced movement techniques help him make his waythrough the treacherous obstacles that await him on his quest.Pressing u executes a basic jump, but it takes a lot more than thisto get through the game.

Triangle JumpThe Triangle Jump letsyou bounce off of a wallperpendicularly for extraheight. To execute thisjump, press u withouttilting the left analogstick when you touch thewall. This technique isuseful for scaling towersand chimneys.

Wall JumpThe Wall Jump is a goodway to escape when anenemy corners you. It’slike the Triangle Jump,except you can steer inany direction. Push uwhen you touch the wallin midair and use the leftanalog stick to control which direction you go.

Wall RunIn addition to jumpingoff of walls, you canalso run along them tocross gaps and reachnew heights. Jumptoward the wall, thenpress and hold u whilepushing the left analogstick in the direction you want to run. Execute multiple Wall Runsto cross large spaces.

Swing JumpIf you jump and touch apole, Lau automaticallygrabs hold. Press uwhile pushing 8 on theleft analog stick to leapto the next pole.

GlideGliding extends therange of your jump.After jumping, hold uand steer with the leftanalog stick.

In order to travel across long distances, begin gliding, perform a single slash attackwith your sword, and then you can glideagain. This will allow you to cover longdistances quickly.

Basic CombatBasic AttackPress p to perform abasic sword swing.Chain several swingstogether by repeatedlypressing p.

Spin AttackPress i to perform theSpin Attack. This usefulmove strikes enemies allaround you. If you’resurrounded, this is alife-saver.

Targeting Mode and EvasionHold R to Lock-On toyour enemy. A redtargeting cursor high-lights the closest foe. Ifthere are multipleenemies, press L toswitch the cursor toanother target.

If you press u whiletargeting, you willperform a leap. Controlyour direction with theleft analog stick. Thistechnique is useful forevading enemy attacks.

Casting SpellsPress o to cast a spell.Using spells requiresmagic power; theamount used depends onthe level of the spell. Tochange your equippedspell, press t andchoose from the menu.

Lock on to enemies when you cast Missilespells by holding down R. This greatlyincreases your chances of hitting them.

Spell List Lau can cast nine spells. They range in power from Level 1, theweakest, to Level 3, the strongest. Some spells are available indifferent strengths. You must find a spell in the game before youcan use it, and if the spell is higher than Level 1, you must alsohave upgraded your Tenreiken attribute to match.

GOUENKEN LEVEL 1–3

This spell hurls a deadly fireball at a single enemy.

SOURYUUKEN LEVEL 1–3

A charging attack that’sgood for gainingground, this spell iseffective as part of amagic combo.

DANKUUKEN LEVEL 2

Dankuuken magicunleashes a shockwavefrom your swords thatstrikes down enemiesboth near and far.

RYOUSEIKEN LEVEL 2

The Ryouseiken spellfires a magic arrowvolley at a group ofenemies.

TENSEIKEN LEVEL 3

After you castTenseiken, magicarrows rain on your enemies.

JINBUKEN LEVEL 2

This spell summons aring of daggers that aidyou in battle. Press oto send them hurtlingtoward your foe.

Your Jinbuken Magic will also help protectyou from enemy attacks, especially arrowsshot by the Archers.

SENRANKEN LEVEL 1–3

Senranken magicsummons a whirlwindaround you that formsa protective barrier andthrows enemies into the air.

TEKKUKEN LEVEL 1

This spell increases yourattack power but slowlydrains your magic. Ittakes effect automati-cally after equipped.

GAISENKEN LEVEL 1

Gaisenken increasesyour defensive abilitiesbut slowly drains yourmagic. This spell takeseffect automaticallyonce equipped.

Using the Gaisenken and Tekkuken spellstogether against certain bosses is a good strategy.

Advanced CombatCombo Attacks

Hold down p (Slash Attack) at the end of acombo to have Lau pose and increase yourStylized Action Points. Each combo has adifferent pose.

Lau can attack with four special combos.

UPPERCUT

Press p,i,p toperform an Uppercutand send your enemyflying high.

After launching an enemy with the Uppercut,jump and continue your attack in the air. It’s unlikely the poor victim will survive to hit the ground.

SPIN COMBO

Press p,i,i toexecute a Spin combo.This allows you toinsert a Spin Attack atthe end of a regularattack chain.

SPELL COMBO

Press p,i,o to releasea Spell combo. You cancast a spell duringcombat with this move.The combo uses what-ever spell you haveequipped. It does notwork with Gaisenken orTekkuken magic.

THUNDER KICK

Press p,i,u tounleash the ThunderKick. This move deliversa series of crushingkicks to your enemy.

COMBO COUNTER

When you attack an enemy, a counter appears to keep track ofyour consecutive hits.

It’s possible to get 1,000 hit combos in the game. Here’s whatyou should know.

If you get hit by an enemy attack, spell, or arrow, your counterresets to zero.

If you don’t hit any enemies for approximately three seconds,your counter will reset to zero.

But there are ways to keep your combo counter going. If youbreak any inanimate object, like a crate, a sign, bamboo…yourcombo counter will reset to three seconds. Another good tip is thatyour counter does not count down while you are wall-running andgliding, so that’s a pretty good incentive to stay airborne.

ClashingWhen an enemy strikesyou from the front witha series of blows, youautomatically becomelocked in a whirlwind ofswordplay called a clash.Each blow you deflecttakes one point fromyour Defense Gauge. Tougher enemies and bosses also have aDefense Gauge you must wear down before you can damage them.

Counter-AttacksWhile clashing, press pto perform a Counter-Attack. Your swordsinflict double damageduring a Counter-Attackbecause your enemy isoff balance and morevulnerable.

Counter-MagicMagical attacks fromenemies can also becountered, but it is moredifficult. Press p repeat-edly as the attack hits toabsorb the energy,which is then trans-ferred to your MagicMeter.

If your magic is fullwhen you performCounter-Magic, you canrelease the stored energyin a powerful blast.Press o when yourMagic Meter flashes redto hurt your enemy. Thistechnique is essential fortaking down the big bosses.

Upgrading Your CharacterWhen you return to theTemple between stages,use the portal to accessthe Power-Up Settingsmenu. Here you canspend the Blue Orbsyou’ve collected topurchase upgrades forfive of Lau’s attributes.Each attribute has three levels of improvement, except for theDefense Gauge, which has five levels.

Ryuugatou: Increases your sword damage and attack rate.

Tenreiken: Increases the damage your spells cause and allows you to use higher-level spells.

Health: Increases your maximum health.

Magic: Increases your maximum magic power.

Defense: Increases your Defense Gauge.

For early stages, improving your Ryuugatouattribute and health level takes priority.Upgrades to the other three attributes areuseful only in the later stages.

In this stage, you must battle through the streets and rooftops of aruined downtown district. The challenges here are slight comparedto later stages, so use this opportunity to practice your swordcombos and jumping techniques.

Courtyard

You begin the first stage in a small square courtyard. Demonicpower seals the door to the next area; you must defeat theenemies before you can proceed. This is your first taste of battle.Fortunately, the enemies here are slow-moving and weak.

The ForsakenSoldiers appearwhen you alightin this area.Destroy themand pick up theBlue Orbs theyleave behind.

Defeating all of theenemies unseals thedoor. Before goingthrough, explore theporch of the buildingopposite the courtyard.

Your first hidden Coin is at the top of the stairs in front ofthe building. Climb the stairs and jump up to grab the Coin.

Urns flank the porch. Smash them to add to your stock ofBlue Orbs. Head through the unsealed door to the next area.

More Forsaken Soldiersappear as you explorethis area. Taking care of these guys is noproblem.

While it is possible to defeat the ForsakenSoldier with normal attacks, you’ll earn moreStyle Points by using Counter-Attacks. Waitfor the demon to clash with you, then press p repeatedly.

After clearing awaythe demons, look to theright side of the street.To reach the top of thishigh ledge, jump ontothe grating…

…and use the WallRun technique to ascendthe rest of the way. Jumptoward the wall, thenpress and hold u and 8at the same time. Whenyou’re at the top, lookacross the street. A ledgeon the other side holdsthree urns.

You can’t make itacross with a normaljump, so you have toGlide. After jumping,press and hold u toperform the Glide. You’llmake it across withroom to spare.

Hop up and collectthe Orbs from the threeurns. Two ForsakenSoldiers materialize. Toavoid falling off theedge, approach yourenemy from the side.

Face the right sideof the street and useanother Glide Jump toreach the Coin. If youmiss, climb up and tryagain. Use this oppor-tunity to get a feel forthe Glide technique; itwill be important inlater stages.

Drop to ground level and continue up the street. As youround the bend, more Forsaken Soldiers appear. Take them out. Ifthey surround you, press i to execute a Spin Attack.

Jump up to the right-hand ledge to find another Coin. Smashopen the crate to reveal a Red Orb, then hop down and continueup the street. Demolish any Forsaken Soldiers that try to stop you.

The road forks here.The path ahead is a deadend, while the branch tothe right leads to the exit.

A new type ofdemon awaits you: theUndead Juggernaut. Hecan run fast despite hissize, and his huge macecan smash through yourdefenses. Hold R toestablish a Lock-On andkeep him in your sights.

If you observe theJuggernaut’s movementscarefully, you can defeathim without gettinghurt. Keep your distanceand wait for him totake a swing at you.Be careful; he some-times takes twoswings in quick succession.

Move in after heattacks and hit himwith a string of swordblows. After performingyour combo, jump backto avoid his next swing.Repeat this processuntil you destroy thedemon. If you becomelow on health, look for a Yellow Orb in the nearby crate.

The Undead Juggernaut is strong. Lau willperish if he gets hit more than a few times, sobe patient and keep your distance until afterthe demon attacks.

You can deflect arrows as long as you are in aready position and facing an enemy Archer.Deflecting an arrow will take away one bladefrom your Defense Gauge.

Two ForsakenArchers wait for youhere. These demons havelow health, so slay thembefore they shoot you.

Jump up to theledges to find a cratecontaining a Red Orband a Coin. Now you’vecollected everything inthis area. Descend andgo through the doorinto the next area.

Recover the Sacred Talisman

COINS: 2SPELLS: NoneITEMS: Sacred TalismanENEMIES: Forsaken Archer, Forsaken Cleaver,Forsaken Soldier, Undead Soldier

Two Forsaken Cleaversconfront you when youenter. These demons aremore aggressive thanthe Forsaken Soldiers.Show them no mercy.

A Coin hovers beyond the roof’s edge. To claim it, use a GlideJump. Leap forward and begin the Glide when you reach the top ofyour arc for maximum distance. If you miss the Coin, you can runup the wall to try again.

Now that you have five Coins, the “PressConference” movie is available from theSpecial Options menu. Check it out later!

More Forsaken Cleavers await you below. Fight them to gettheir valuable Blue Orbs.

Continue forward to the next building and grab the Red Orbfrom inside the crate.

A magical barrierseals the doorway here.A troop of ForsakenSoldiers and Cleaversguards it.

Use your Spin Attackto send the demonsflying, then finish themoff one by one.

Another wave ofenemies teleports induring this battle. Takeout the Archer first,then deal with theUndead Soldiers.

When the demonsare cleared away, thebarrier dissolves andyou can grab the SacredTalisman. You need thisitem to open the door atthe area’s end.

Atop the nextbuilding are anotherCoin and a Red Orb.Collect these items andhead for the exit.

A demonic seal locksthe door. Approach itand press u to dispelthe seal with yourSacred Talisman, thengo through to the next area.

Withstand the Flood

Follow this BlueOrb trail down to theglowing crate. The pinkaura means there is anew spell waiting foryou inside.

Demolishing thecrate nets you theSouryuuken spell—andtriggers a nasty trap!

A massive flood hurtles toward you, but you can protect yourself with the Counter-Magic technique. As the wall of waterhits, tap p to deflect the impact with your swords. Tap until yourMagic Gauge turns red, then press o to disperse the flood.

If you fail to execute this technique properly, Master Naguriwill intervene and give you another chance.

The Souryuuken spell is useful for more thanslaying demons. Cast the spell while jumpingto surge forward and gain extra distance.

Two ForsakenArchers lie in wait asyou climb the ramps atthe flood channel’s farend. Keep moving andtheir missiles will flypast you.

Strike down a pairof Forsaken Cleavers anda Forsaken Soldierlurking at the top of the ramps.

Use this series ofpoles to get onto thenext building. Standunder the pole andpress u to grab hold.

Press u whileyou’re hanging to hopup and balance atop thepole so you can jumpfor the next one.

As you head downthe slope into the nextarea, seek out the Cointucked away in the farcorner.

A demon gang attacks you here, but it didn’t count on awhirlwind of deadly steel. Use your new spell on them. There’s aRed Orb inside a crate that you can use to refill your magic afterthe battle.

You must cross this deep pit to reach the exit. Use the row ofpoles on the right to reach the other side.

Jump out and grab the first pole. Hold 8 while pressing u toperform a Swing Jump.

If you fall, a demon horde appears. Escape the pit byascending the row of poles on the left side.

Even if you can make it across the pit withoutfalling, jump down and fight the enemies at thebottom. You can earn a lot of Blue Orbs that way.

The Home Stretch

Glide Jump to reach thisCoin. Below it, a pairof Forsaken Soldiersawaits your divinejustice.

Venture onward anddeal with the ForsakenCleavers you find.Shatter the urns here forBlue Orbs beforeproceeding.

On the left a ramp leads up a platform. Charge forward andtake down the demons who appear. After defeating them, collectthe Orbs from the containers nearby.

Climb onto the large box at the platform’s edge and grab the Coin.

With 10 Coins, you can visit the SpecialOptions menu later to watch a newbonus movie, “Gackt Interview.”

Hop up onto the nextledge to find anotherglowing crate. This oneconceals the Tekkukenspell. Equipping thisboosts your attack powerwhile draining yourmagic. Lau emits agolden aura while thespell is in effect.

Explore the areaunderneath the plat-form. There are lots of demons and someurns here.

After you clear awaythe first wave ofenemies, an UndeadJuggernaut arrives. Apair of Undead Soldiersescorts him. Take downthe big guy first. Hangback until he finishesswinging his club, then

dash in to attack. Equip the Tekkuken spell to make things easier.

You can score aCounter-Attackagainst theJuggernaut if youtime your attack.As the giantdemon swings hisclub, press p.Combined withTekkuken magic, this Counter-Attack inflictsmassive damage. You can still get hurt,however, so don’t attempt this technique ifyou are low on health.

Head up the rampsand destroy the ForsakenArchers who appear.Collect the Yellow Orbinside the crate beforeyou jump onto the finalledge to confront thisarea’s boss.

THE OVERLORD OF TEARS

The Overlord of Tears is amaster swordsman like yourself.He is quick and can use avariety of techniques with hisdeadly blade. But he’s not asquick or deadly as Lau.

…before unleashingthe energy in a series ofthree blasts. Dodge tothe side to avoid theshockwave.

Interlude at the TempleAfter you defeat theOverlord of Tears, amysterious womanappears.

Lau catches a whiffof someone and jumps tothe person’s location. Atfirst Lau regards her asan enemy and thrustshis sword in her face,but he then realizes thatshe is actually a personwhom he knows welland puts away his swordwith surprise.

The woman, whosename is Yohfa, forgivesLau’s suspicions andreveals that she is hereto help. She conjures amagic portal that takesyou to the Temple.

Arriving at theTemple, Yohfa createsanother portal beforevanishing. Ignore it fornow and take a momentto explore the Templegrounds. There are noenemies or items here,but you can practiceLau’s various moves andpick up a few Blue Orbs along the way.

If you enter theTemple, you can practiceyour attacks on aTraining Dummy andreview the tutorials.

Approach the portaland press u. Enter thePower-Up Settings menuand spend the Blue Orbsyou’ve gathered toupgrade Lau’s stats. Wesuggest improving yourattack level or healthlevel first. (See the“Upgrading Your Character”section in “The CelestialWarrior” for moreinfo.) Use the portalto travel to Stage 2:Bamboo Forest.

The portal allows you to revisit any stage youhave been to. This is a good way to earnmore Blue Orbs to beef up Lau’s stats.

The Bamboo Forest is a haunting maze shrouded in mist. You mustvanquish demons and solve puzzles in each area to unseal thelocked doors that bar your progress.

Purify the Forest

Turn aroundand peerupward to spy a Coin floatingabove you.

Use a Triangle Jumpto reach the Coin. Runup the wall and tap uwhen you get to the top.

Venture up the path until a large monument looms out of themist. Read it with u. You must defeat every demon in this area tobreak the seal on the exit door.

Continue north to find some Forsaken Soldiers. Destroy themand move on.

Cutting the bamboo stalks with your swordsreplenishes your Magic Gauge.

A Feral Ripperappears when you reach this intersection.This agile rat-headeddemon leaps aroundwhile attacking. Jumpand perform a midaircombo to permanentlyground him.

Enter the clearingand slaughter thepatrolling enemies, thenshatter the stone wardwith your swords. Onlyseven more to go!

Continue on, annihi-lating demons along theway. Check the alcove onyour left for two urns,then enter the nextclearing.

Eliminate the demons here, then head to the three stone wards.

Demolish the stones with a couple of Spin Attacks. Leave theclearing by the northern path to find the last four wards.

Vanquish the demons,then destroy the cratehere to claim a newspell, Senranken. Thispowerful magic conjuresa mighty whirlwind thatstrikes all nearbyenemies.

Senranken magic isthe only thing that candestroy the final fourstone wards. Standbetween the stones andcast the spell to shatterall four at once. Thedoor at the area’s end isnow open.

Grab the Coin fromthe northwest alcove.

A Yellow Orb awaitsyou in the northeastalcove. Claim it, thenreturn to the secondclearing and follow theeastern path.

Stop by the dead endon the right and shattera pair of urns for someBlue Orbs.

Before taking the exit, look left—thereis a Coin floating above the path.

Use a Glide Jump to nab theCoin, then go through the door tothe final area.

Gather the Harvest

According to the monu-ment, you must“complete the harvest”to proceed.

Chop down somebamboo. The Green Orbsthat pop out are your“harvest.” The exitopens only if you arecarrying 100 or more ofthese—but there’s acatch. Green Orbs areunstable and quicklydrain away.

Don’t worry about collecting Green Orbs until you have exploredthe area. Venture forward and take out a trio of Undead Soldiers.

This is the 15th Coin. A new movie, “Motion Capture,” is unlocked.

Snag the Coin fromthe left alcove, then head north.

Wipe out the UndeadSoldiers in the nextclearing.

The giant bamboo inthe corner will give up50 Green Orbs, but don’tharvest it yet.

Fight your wayalong the flagstonepath to the nextclearing.

Slaughter thedemons, being carefulto avoid the giantbamboo in the corner.

Proceed to the nextclearing and butcherthe awaiting demons.

Check the alcove hereto find a spell crate and,floating above it, a Coin.

Take the Gaisenkenspell, then use aTriangle Jump to reachthe Coin. Gaisenkenraises your defense whenequipped, but it drainsyour magic power.

Head north to thefinal clearing. Apowerful cat demon,Spear Prowler, pounceson you here.

Use R to keep alock on the SpearProwler. Don’t wait forit to charge; rush inand give it all you’vegot! After defeating it,take care of the otherdemons wanderingaround.

Now you have clearedaway the enemies anditems in this area.Backtrack to the firstclearing and chop downthe giant bamboo.

As you go to the exit,maintain your stock ofGreen Orbs by cuttingdown bamboo stalks.Harvest any giantbamboo you see as well.

You can get multiple Green Orbs from eachstalk if you chop it down with a Spin Attack.

You should havemore than 100 GreenOrbs by the time youreach the exit. If not,keep slicing until youdo. Regular bamboostalks regenerate, butthe giant ones don’t.

Before exiting, look left to find a crate containing a Yellow Orb.You’ll need full health for the upcoming boss battle.

Arriving at the Forest Temple, you areconfronted by yourformer ally, now avillain, Rei Jenron.Instead of fighting you,he escapes through aportal and leaves you todeal with the mightyTrogdar.

TROGDARTrogdar is a giganticdemon. Despite his bulk,he can make quickbursts of speed. Use Rto keep a lock on him atall times. HittingTrogdar in the face doesmore damage thanhitting him in the body.

You can deal massivedamage to Trogdar withCounter-Magic. Wait forhim to jump away andcharge up power.

When Trogdar fireshis energy bolt, tap pto begin the Counter-Magic technique…

…then press o whenyour Magic Meter flashesred. This knocks off a bigchunk of Trogdar’shealth.

Trogdar also createsseveral huge boulders tohurl at you. It takeshim a while to executethis attack, so run inand hit him hard. Youcan interrupt the attackif you deal enoughdamage.

Hitting an Enemy Boss in the head inflictsmore damage. The enemy turns red whenthis happens.

After you defeathim, a portal appears.Step through to returnto the Temple.

The DesecratedMonastery is on a sheercliff face. Once home todevoted monks, demonsnow overrun it. Laumust face tough newenemies and traps whilekeeping an eye out forsecret rooms and items.

Before you begin this stage, use the Power-UpSettings menu to spend the Blue Orbs you gath-ered in the Bamboo Forest. To use the new spellsin this stage, raise your Tenreiken to Level 2.

The Outer Wall

Series of ramps circle the outer wall. They link the differentmonastery floors. You’ll return here several times during this stage.

After arriving on thelowest ramp, look upto see a pair ofledges. Run up thewall to smash an urnwaiting there.

Take the door at theramp’s top to enter thefirst floor.

As you head inside, youmeet up with a RazorSpider gang. Its manylegs are no match foryour two swords.

Razor Spiders hurlgobs of venom at you.Dodge the venom or deflect it withCounter-Magic.

Spiders can release their venom only whenclinging to a wall. Swat them to the ground tonegate this attack.

Collect the Blue Orbs from atop the pillar before going on.

More Razor Spiders lurk here. Make spider sauce out of them.

Run up the planks toget through the next setof rooms, grabbing BlueOrbs along the way.

As you round thecorner, jump and takeout the Razor Spidersabove you.

Follow the Blue Orb trail by running along the wall.

Use another Wall Run to follow the next trail of Blue Orbs.

If you fall here, a Razor Spider swarm materializes. Weak individually, Razor Spidersare formidable in large numbers. Keepmoving while fighting to avoid getting struckfrom behind.

Continue along thehall, watching for aledge holding a Coin. Acouple of Razor Spidersput up feeble resistance.

Another Orb trail shows the way forward. Razor Spiders lurkbelow should you fall.

Clear out the spiders from the final room. Before you leave, takethe Coin in front of the statue.

BACK TO THE OUTER WALLGo through the doorand along the outsideramp. At the end is aCoin beyond the railing.Jump over the side toget it. If you land on the lower ramp, you’llhave to fight your waythrough the first floor again.

A way to get the Coin without losing any healthis to stand on the rail with Lau’s back to theCoin (facing the doors), jump up, and whileLau is in the air, press down lightly on the leftanalog stick. Lau will catch the rail with hishand and collect the Coin at the same time,thereby retaining all of his health.

The Second Floor

Lau remembers a scenefrom long ago, whenRei was still one of thegood guys. Why hebecame evil is still amystery.

Go down the hall andexterminate some RazorSpiders. They’re backedup by a Forsaken Archer,so take him out too.

Skip the stairs for now and go through the opening high in theleft corner.

Jump down into the next room and take out the Razor Spidersand a lone Undead Archer. Empty the crate and urns on the ledge,then continue down the hall.

More Razor Spidersawait you at the bottomof the stairs. Carve themup, then go through the door.

BACK TO THE OUTER WALL

You are outside again.Glide to the next ledge.

Enter the little shrineand smash open thecrate to get a new spell,Gouenken Level 2. This isa stronger version of thestandard fire spell. Glideto the door and back-track to the stairs youskipped earlier.

Statue traps awaityou around the nextcorner. Wait for them tofire, then run over andshatter them with yourswords.

You can peer around corners with the rightanalog stick. Use this to get a clear view ofthe statues so you can time your charge.

Pick up the Coin bythe left window.

With 20 Coins, the Character Viewer becomesavailable under the Special Options menu.You can view the Lau Wong Character Model.

More statue traps areahead. Wait until thecoast is clear, then dashin and turn them torubble.

Continue on, demol-ishing more statue trapsalong the way.

Run up the wall toget the Coin tuckedaway high in the corner.

Two last statue trapsblock your way to theexit. Pulverize them,check the corner for acrate containing a YellowOrb, and go through the door.

BACK TO THE OUTER WALLWhen you get to the end of the ramp, turn around and notice theCoin atop the ledge. Run up the wall to reach it, then go throughthe door to the third floor.

The Third Floor

Drop into the first roomand take on the enemies.

Ignore the poles onthe right and useTriangle Jumps to ascendto the next area. Standunder the row of BlueOrbs and jump fromwall to wall.

Razor Spiders greetyou at the top. Welcomethem with your swords.

Don’t drop into thenext room yet. Instead,go left around thecorner and down thestairs to find someRazor Spiders and urns. Then go throughthe door.

BACK TO THE OUTER WALL

Once outside, Glide tothe next ledge.

Enter the shrine tofind a stash of cratesand urns. Empty themand go back the wayyou came.

Glide to the platform to find a Coin, then head into the next room.

A new spell awaitsyou. Before you canclaim it, you mustvanquish its guardian,the Overlord of Sin.

Like the Overlord ofTears you fought at theend of the first stage,this demon is a swordmaster. Stay close andhit him with a flurry ofblows until his DefenseGauge is wiped out, thenfinish your attack with a combo.

After the battle, smashopen the crate to claimthe spell, Ryouseiken.This awesome spelllaunches volleys ofmagic arrows at yourenemies.

Go out and lookunder the wooden plat-form for a trio of urns.

A new type ofdemon, the PoisonousWatcher, appears as you head down the next hall.

Poisonous Watchers self-destruct in a damaging fireball whenthey are slain or when you get too close. After knocking onedown, jump away to avoid the blast.

Run up the wall in the corner to find a hidden ledge holding a Coin.

Defeat the RazorSpiders that appear,then descend and go tothe hall’s end. TriangleJump off the walls toreach the next ledge.

Take out the gang ofForsaken Warriors in thenext room.

Continue onward,avoiding PoisonousWatchers. At the hall’send, look down to see arow of statue traps.

Hop down anddestroy these traps sothat if you fall whileascending to the nextarea, they won’t nail you.

Go up and run alongthe wall to collect theBlue Orbs.

Once across, climb tothe next level and run onthe left side, followingthe Blue Orb path.

Jump out to grab theCoin, then rebound offthe wall to avoid falling.

With 25 Coins, a new menu appears in theSpecial Options menu: Lau Costume Settings.The new costume gives Lau an up-to-datelook, with a stylish jacket and sunglasses.

To reach this crate,you must run along thewall on the left…

…and jump off. AYellow Orb is yourreward. After taking it,go to the last ledge andthrough the door.

BACK TO THE OUTER WALLOnce outside, turnaround and look up tospy a Coin hovering inthe corner. Run up thewall and take it.

Continue around the ledge and throughthe door.

An army of demonsguards the door leadingto the boss. As you slicethem to shreds, watchout for Archers.Eventually, an UndeadJuggernaut arrives to capoff the battle. When it’sall over, head throughthe unsealed door.

Lau remembers the daywhen Rei went bad.When demons killedYohfa, Rei was blindedwith rage and claimedthe demon’s power forhis own. After the flash-back, Rei appears justlong enough to provideyou with a new play-mate: the fearsomeMahler.

MAHLERMahler is a giganticbeast with a variety offast and deadly attacks.Lau has his work cutout for him in thisbattle.

Counter-Magic isyour best hope in thisfight. When Mahlerlaunches a fireball atyou, absorb the energyby tapping p, thenrelease it with o.

This blast will knockoff almost half ofMahler’s health.

When Mahler leaps up and curls into a ball, he’s about to dive-bomb you. You can block this attack and answer it with a combo ofyour own, or dodge asideand strike him when helands. Do not rush inbefore Mahler attacks; hewill jump away.

Keep battling withCounter-Magic andCounter-Attacks until thebeast has had enough.After the battle, Mahlerruns away. Don’t worry;you’ll get a chance tofinish him off later.

Climb the stairs andjump onto the roof. Dealcautiously with thePoisonous Watchers here.

Across the way aCoin sits on a ledge. Thegong-like contraptionhovering before it is aGold Soul-Mirror.

Soul-Mirrors comein several varieties, butthey are all stationaryand fire a ceaselessbarrage of energy bolts.They are impervious tomagic. To destroy thisone, run out along thewall above it, then dropand shatter it with asingle blow. Now youcan reach the Coin.

Glide or climb ontothe building in the oppo-site corner.

Smash open the urns, then climb up the row of poles. At thetop, look back to see a Coin floating nearby.

Climb up the poles and jump onto the ledge. Look right andGlide across the ledges to the other side. Don’t worry about theSoul-Mirror.

Undead Archers andPoisonous Watchersambush you when youarrive. Keep the sword-play simple to avoidfalling off the edge.

Get on top of thelong pillar that juts intothe middle of the area.A Coin waits for you atthe end.

On the other side ofthe pillar, look down; aledge holds a spellcrate. Jump over andsmash it to getSouryuuken Level 2.

You can’t use Level 2 spells until you upgradeyour magic attribute to the same level. If youneed to return to the Temple to makeupgrades, you can do so at any time. Presss to activate the menu and choose“Return to the Temple.”

Wall Run over thepillar and use the polesto get onto the highestledge in the far corner.

As you smash theurns here, watch out forincoming fire from theGold Soul-Mirror.

Continue around thearea’s edge, Glidingfrom ledge to ledge.

Recover the Scorpion Key

Look up when you enterto spy a Coin right underthe hole in the ceiling.

Your 30th Coin unlocks Lau’s new costume.You can view it in the Special Options menuunder the Character Viewer section.

Break down thedoors on the right toproceed.

Head down the hall. Look for a pair of doors on the right. Theroom on the other side is a trap. It’s optional, but you can enterand fight the demons inside for Blue Orbs.

If you accept the challenge, you get to slaughter someForsaken Cleavers and Warriors.

Destroy the urns at the intersection and continue down to the next set of breakable doors.

Faulty Towers

Spawned Warriors are tough. Not only canthey use combos, they can throw their bladesat you. Stay close when fighting them so youdon’t get hit by a flying sword.

An Overlord of Paincommands the room onthe left. He has nothingfor you, so avoid thisroom if you are low onhealth. But if you have araging thirst for demon-slaying, you won’t passhim by.

It’s a long way up.Run up the left wall toreach the first landing.

When you get to thetop, drop on the rightside to get the Coin. Run up and deal withthe waiting demons.

The onslaught begins when you round the corner. One SinisterTalon appears on the ground. When you defeat it, an UndeadJuggernaut appears.

To make this battle easier, take out the leap-ing demons first. Then you are free to dealwith the Undead Juggernaut without rudeinterruptions.

Grab a Red Orb fromthe crate at the end ofthe alley, then climb thewall onto the roof.

To reach the nextplateau, look for a gapin the awnings throughwhich to run.

Another wave of demons appears when you get to the top. Layinto them with a vengeance.

Jump out and run along the wall to reach the Coin on acorner ledge.

Use another WallRun to reach the nextopening.

Continue along thewall on the right. Timeyour run between theblasts from the GoldSoul-Mirrors layingdown crossfire on theawaiting ledge.

Reach the ledge anda Coin is your reward.If you fall, climb up andtry again.

Glide forward to thenext platform and slaythe demons there, thenclaim the Red Orb fromthe crate nearby.

REI JENRON

Rei is an extremelytough opponent, andhe’s here to dish outpain. His demonicpowers give him speedand power, and he packsa slew of nasty swordtechniques. Your combatprowess is going to faceits toughest test yet.

Clash with Rei andkeep an eye on theDefense Gauges. If yoursgets too low, break outof the clash with u. Youcan wear down Rei’sgauge if your attack isvigorous, but it willtake some endurance.

Stray too far fromyour rival and he’llunleash some rangedattacks. Dodge theseattacks with u.

Avoiding Rei’s magic attacks is tricky. To eliminate the danger, maintain a clash.He’ll be too busy to try anything else.

When Rei’s healthruns out, he makes hiscustomary escapethrough a summonedportal. But you’re notout of danger yet.

MAHLER

He’s baaaack! And he’snot in a good mood.He’s also got a lot more health than hehad before.

Absorb Mahler’sfireballs with Counter-Magic. Release yourattack quickly, becauseMahler is fasterthan ever.

Mahler can make upto four quick dash attacksin sequence. Target himwith R so you candodge aside. Carefullytime your evasive leaps. Ifyou simply mash urepeatedly, Mahler willnail you.

Get a slash in atevery opportunity, butavoid using longcombos. A Spin Attackworks best. It will hitmultiple times, but youcan still react if Mahlertries anything sneaky.

Counter-Attacks and Counter-Magic areessential here. It is extremely difficult to win this battle with normal attacks and spells alone.

As if things aren’tbad enough, Mahler’sdiving attack leaves aflame trail in its wake.Keep away until it burns out.

When you defeatthe behemoth, hedissolves in a flamecloud. Breathe a sigh of relief because you’redone with Mahler for good.

Continue on and dropinto the valley ahead—triggering an avalanche!This is like the flood yousurvived in the ForsakenCity. Use Counter-Magicwhen the avalanche hitsto blaze a path throughthe onrushing snow.

A Coin is atop thegate as you emerge fromthe valley. Run up theside of the gate and take it.

Continue up the path to meet a gang of Forsaken Berserkers;stay away from the left cliff as you battle them.

The Phoenix Key

Six cave openings dot this valley. Some of thecaverns hold items and spells, while others lead to theancient temple buried inside the mountain. To reach the temple’sinner sanctum, you must seek out and activate three magic altars,each of which requires its own special key.

Safe from the wind atlast! Upon entering, runto the left bluff to find aCoin. Use a TriangleJump to reach it.

As you head into thevalley, a team ofSpawned Killers materi-alize around you. Slaythem if you wish, but bewarned: They regenerateevery time you return tothis valley.

The first cave to visitis at this valley’s end.

Use your swords to shatter the iciclesobstructing the cave mouths.

Forsaken Berserkersand Spawned Killersawait their doom in thischamber. Don’t disap-point them.

The deed done, you are now free to claim the Phoenix Key, thefirst of three you must find. Key in hand, head into the valley.

Go through the cave nearest the valley entrance. This loopingpath leads around the ancient temple’s perimeter. Don’t worryabout the other caves for now; you will come back to them later.

Run up the narrow side of the second platform. At the top,press u to Triangle Jump and Glide to the crate. Smash it open toreceive Gouenken Level 3, the strongest type of fire magic.

To use Level 3 spells, Lau’s magic attributemust be at the same level. Remember this thenext time you’re upgrading your character ifyou want to use powerful magic.

Spell in hand, runalong the platform’swide side to exitthrough the door ahead.

You emerge intoanother snowy valleylined with caves.Descend upon thehapless demons loiter-ing here and carve theminto tiny pieces.

The sealed portal opens only for the bearer of the Turtle Key. Thekey is inside the next cave on the right.

Enter the cave to grab both the key and a Yellow Orb. Head intothe snow. Turn right and enter the last cave.

Liquidate the Remorseless Phantoms and sunder the laser-emitting statues. That done, jump up to catch your next Coin.

Go outside. The secondcave from the left holdsa new spell. To claim it,you have to vanquish anew enemy.

Make use of your new spell in upcomingbattles. The powerful shockwave can strikeenemies at a great distance.

You are ready to re-enter the temple.Enter the formerlysealed door flanked bytwin blue torches.

Jump onto the soli-tary pillar to obtain theDragon Key. This is thelast key in the set. With that, pass through the door.

Traverse the platformswhile taking out MaceConstructs and ForsakenArchers. Beyond the nextdoor is the frozen valley.

Once outside, turnright and enter the lastcave in the row. Thisbrings you to the otherside of the room youwere in.

Head to the blue altar you passed earlier and activate it usingyour Dragon Key. Platforms ascend out of the chasm. Leavethrough the door you entered.

In the cold again, turn left and enter the neighboring cave. Thisis the only cave at ground level to which you have not yet been.

Hop on the platformand it rises up, takingyou to a new door.

Outside, approachthe massive sealed dooron your left.

In front of youstands a green altar.Activate it with yourTurtle Key and a final platform moves into place.

Grab the Coin as you head across the platforms and into theinner sanctum of theancient temple.

Demolish the HookConstructs roaminghere, then approach the altar in the room’s center.

Three spheres are needed to activate thisaltar and open the path forward. To obtainthese spheres, seek out and defeat theirdemon guardians.

Turn around andlook up to spy a Cointwinkling above you.Run up the pillar’s sideto claim it.

If you fall off any of the ledges, just run upthe wall to get back up.

Destroy or avoid thePoisonous Watchers andventure into the room atthe ledge’s end.

You must defeat theOverlord of Sin to obtainthe next sphere.

Clash with him andmaintain your attackuntil you wear downhis Defense Gauge.

Break through hisdefenses and yourblows will strike home.

The Azure Sphere isyours to take afterdefeating the Overlordof Sin. One sphere leftto go.

Leave the room andhead to the crate on theleft ledge, whichcontains a Red Orb.Continue along the ledgeto find a Coin. Proceedonto the next ledge andenter the left room.

The Overlord ofDespair guards thefinal sphere.

Deal with thisdemon the same wayyou fought the otherOverlords. Use yourSpin Attack to helpbreak down his DefenseGauge. If he’s foolishenough to try throwinghis giant sword at you,dash behind him andcut him to pieces.

The Crimson Sphere isyours for the taking. Youhave collected all threespheres, so drop to theground floor and placethe spheres in their altar.

With the spheres in place, the altar momentarily glows before crumbling away into a yawning pit in the floor. Much to his dismay, Lau falls through and prepares to face the boss of the temple.

TROGDAR

It’s always nice to see a familiar face—unless that face belongs to Trogdar.

Use the energy-boltattack to absorb hisbreath attack.

Launch the attack inhis face with o. Thistakes off a big chunk ofhis health.

Trogdar likes to rockand roll! When hesummons the boulders,run in and start chop-ping. Deal enoughdamage, and it willspoil his attack.

Get behind this brute and unleash a volley of combos on hisexposed backside.

Keep hammering away at Trogdar until he goes down. There’s noescape for him this time; he’s gone for good.

Hop up to the ledgeon the right. There is aCoin in the next room,tantalizingly close. Thedemons in the nextroom want a piece ofyou so badly that theywon’t wait for you tocome to them. Bigmistake, demons.

Jump in and takecare of business and theurns, then…

…grab your Coinand be on your way.

The Soulless Phantom makes hisappearance in the next chamber. Like his

remorseless cousin, this demon periodicallyemerges out of the ground. Be ready with a

Gouenken Fireball when he pops up.

Go down thenarrow passage to theleft and enter thechamber at the end. Thedoor locks behind you,trapping you with aDemonic Talon and twoSoul-Mirrors. Or arethey trapped in herewith you…? Eliminatethem to open the door.

Smash open thecrate to claim the spellJinbuken. This magicconjures a ring ofdaggers that encircleyou until you press o tosend them flying towardan enemy.

Head back the wayyou came and continueonward, slaughteringany who cross your path.

Veer right into thechamber with the twocrates. The lower cratecontains a Red Orb, andthe crate on the ledgeholds a Yellow Orb.

As you continue into the next chamber, more demons materi-alize. Finish them off and claim your prize.

The Guardian Tablet you receive unseals the door at the end ofthis area. Backtrack and make for the final chamber in this area.

As you battleForsaken Berserkershere, avoid the laserbeam cutting across thechamber.

Follow the ramp around the room’s edge. Don’t try to jumpover the Soul-Mirror’s laser—wait for a pause in the beam.

Continue along the ramp, running on the wall to cross any gaps.

Walk to the back ofthe pillar and run to thetop. Two Watchersappear, so back off untilthey commit suicide.When it’s safe, claim thespell Senranken Level 3from the crate. This isthe most powerful formof whirlwind magic.

Arachnid Attack

Upon entering, headright to find two urns.Crush them to receiveBlue Orbs.

Lau seems worried.That’s because this roomis slowly filling withmagma. Keep moving tostay above the ever-rising lava.

Run clockwisealong the walls fromledge to ledge until youget to a ramp.

Climb the ramp. Don’t slow down or the magma will overtake you.

At the end, jump and Glide to the ledge on your right.Forsaken Deathknights await you. Deal with them.

Jump atop therubble to grab thenearby Coin.

From there, continueacross the wall to thenext platform.

Go counterclockwise,avoiding all enemies,until you reach the lavachamber’s top. When youarrive, you are thrustinto a boss battle.

MISTRESS OF CRUELTY

The Mistress of Crueltymore than lives up toher name. She wieldstwin swords wreathedin flame and commandspowerful magical abilities.

Her triple laser attack isthe worst. She aims the beams atthree Jade Soul-Mirrors, whichrevolve to sweep the chamberwith death.

The Soul-Mirrorscan be destroyed. Laucan also target theMistress while the lasersare firing and shoot herdown with GouenkenLevel 3 (which causes asubstantial amount ofdamage), Souryuuken,Ryouseiken, or Jinbuken; or Lau can Triangle Jump off the walland strike her with his swords. Lau can also parry the lasers tobuild up his magic. While she's in the air building up to spawnthe mirrors or the warriors, she can be shot with magic, andwhen she stabs the ground to spawn the demons, Lau can jumpover her and use Senranken Level 3.

The Mistress stacks the odds against you by summoning acrowd of Forsaken Deathknights. Ignore this distraction and focusyour attention on the Mistress.

Sometimes she attacks you with Gouenken magic.

Use Counter-Magicto absorb the fireballsand redirect the energyat the Mistress. This isthe best way to inflictbig damage in a hurry.

Do not enter a clash with theMistress while she is standing on the

ground. If you do, she will always winthe struggle by shooting a waveof fire.

Instead, jump andtake your battle to theair. Because she isunable to defend herselfwith a fire wave, theMistress’s DefenseGauge will run out,allowing you to score asolid combo.

MASTER NAGURI

When the conflict is over, Lau returns to the Temple and has anunexpected reunion with Master Naguri. The former teacher wantsto administer one last test.

Master Naguriknows every trick in thebook. He can use everyspell and combo youknow, and he has morehealth than you.

As with all bosses,Counter-Magic is the keyto scoring big damage.Use it.

It is difficult, butyou can beat down theMaster in a clash.Watch your DefenseGauge, and break off theattack if it’s not goingyour way.

After you proveyourself to MasterNaguri, he exhorts you tohasten to the final stagefor a decisive confronta-tion with Rei. Onlyby slaying yourformerfriend canyou freehim fromthe demonicpower that holds him.

The quest’s next stage takes you to new heights as you navigateplatforms and ledges floating above an endless expanse of clouds.Your jumping skills are put to the ultimate test.

You can glide great distances by executing aquick slash at the end of your glide, thengliding again. You can repeat this as often asyou like. Or if you just need a little extradistance, you can cast Souryuuken.

Islands in the Clouds

Upon arriving, lookahead to see a pair ofislands joined by abridge. This is your firstdestination. To get there,Glide across the series ofplatforms leading to thebig wall on the right.

If you fall while moving through this area youautomatically reappear on the last platformyou jumped from, but it costs you somehealth. Do your best to avoid repeated falls,which can add up to a lot of damage.

Begin your Glide atyour jump’s peak to get

maximum distance. Ifyou fear you won’tmake it, don’t forgetthat you can grabonto the edge of aplatform if you getclose enough.

Leap over and runalong the wall, then

Triangle Jump and Glideto reach the next ledge.Execute the TriangleJump when you reachthe dark strip in thewall’s center.

Disperse theForsaken Berserkerswith a Spin Attack.Avoid using comboshere, or you might findyourself unable to let upthe attack before you falloff the edge.

To the right,three platforms

extend into the mist.Jump across to grab theCoin floating above thethird platform, thencome to the bridgedislands.

Beyond the platform at the bridge’s upper end is anotherCoin. Glide over and pick it up. After you have it, return and go tothe platform by the entrance.

From the entrance’s left, platforms lead up to an Iron Soul-Mirror floating above. Glide over and go to the top.

Ahead of you is a platform holding aspell crate. It’s too faraway to reach with anormal Glide.

The Iron Soul-Mirror overhead is yourticket across. Jump upand unleash a series ofmidair combos on theMirror. Don’t let up theattack until you get tothe other side. Keep inmind that the timing ofyour button presses isimportant.

Demolish the crateto claim the spellSouryuuken Level 3. Stayclear of the hoveringPoisonous Watchers andwait at a safe distancefor them to detonatebefore proceeding.

When the coast isclear, Glide to the smallplatform below you andto the right. Get a goodrun-up and time yourGlide to get every inchof distance you can.

Hop to the largerplatform and wait forthe PoisonousWatchers to explodewhile keeping a safedistance. You couldalso cast Senranken to destroy them.

Ignore the left wall and jump acrossthe remaining few platforms to reachthe exit. Take down the ForsakenBerserkers and Undead Knights thatawait you and smash the nearbycrate for a Yellow Orb, then headthrough the door.

Bridges and Elevators

A number of red andyellow platforms arescattered through thisarea. The red ones areunstable and drop awaywhen you land on them;jump again to avoidgoing with them. Theyellow ones, whilestable, are in constantmotion and thereforetricky to navigate.

Ascend the left setof platforms. Wait forthe yellow platform toslide left, then makeyour move. Three quickGlides will get you up tothe next island.

From there, jumpand grab onto thenearby pole. Press uwhile hanging to standatop the pole, thenGlide to the bridge.

A horde of enemiesawaits you. Conductyour battle in thebridge’s center,where the railingshelp prevent youfrom falling off.

Glide to the next set of bridges. TheScythe Constructs thatpatrol them try to knockyou off, so stay betweenthe rails.

There is a nearby Coin on the side of a floating pillar.

Grab the Coin by Gliding over and running up the pillar’sside, then Triangle Jump away to return to the bridge.

Glide to the nextbridge and eliminate theForsaken Assassins andForsaken Deathknights.Continue to the end tofind a crate containing aRed Orb.

Using the yellowplatform on the right,ride up to the nextbridge.

Head to the bridge’s far end, clearing away enemies as you go. Atthe end is an Iron Soul-Mirror that you can use to cross to the exit.

Jump up and smack the Mirror with a rain of combos untilyour attack carries you to the other side.

When you arrive, getthe Yellow Orb from thecrate. Head through thedoor to the next area.

The Overlord of Pain

Stride forward anddemolish the spell crate to receive a newspell, Tenseiken Level 3.This powerful spellevokes a magic arrowshower that rains uponyour foes.

Cross the bridgeand look for the Coinfloating below the plat-form’s edge. Have Laustand so his back is tothe Coin. Jump up, andwhile he is in the air,press down lightly onthe left analog stick. Lau moves backward, catches the edge ofthe platform with his hand, and collects the Coin at the sametime, thereby retaining all of his health.

Climb up to the bigcenter platform. Whenyou get there, a steelcage rises up around theplatform, trapping you.Fortunately, it also keepsyou from falling offwhile you take on theOverlord of Pain.

Start the battle withyour new Tenseikenspell, which deals heftydamage to the Overlordof Pain.

You’ve had a lot ofcombat experience.Defeating him is easy.

When you defeat theOverlord of Pain, thecage around you retractsand the door at thearea’s end is unsealed.Before going through,refresh yourself with theRed and Yellow Orbsfound on either side ofthe arena. When you’reready, proceed through the door.

Mirror, Mirror….

After entering, take aride on the Soul-Mirrortrain to reach the nextplatform.

Two more Soul-Mirrors await. Use theone on the right toembark on a longer paththat will take you by anurn containing a BlueOrb, or use the onefacing forward to take ashortcut to the spiralramp in the distance.

Whatever path youchoose, you wind up ona tall spiral ramp.

Run to the ramp’sbottom to find a Coin.Grab it, then turnaround and head for the top.

With 60 Coins, the “Maaya SakamotoInterview” becomes available under theSpecial Options menu.

Scythe Constructs, Forsaken Deathknights, and an UndeadJuggernaut try to block your progress up the ramp. Carve a paththrough them.

At the top, use the Soul-Mirror to work your way to the nextseries of platforms.

When you alight, goaround to the platformin the center thatsupports four pillars.

Climb up one of thepillars to discover afifth pillar floating inthe platform’s center.

To get atop thecenter pillar, jump overand run up the side.This is tricky becausethe pillar is narrow andyou must jump at itfrom an angle. Get yourfeet on the lower corner,then aim diagonallyacross at the uppercorner as you run.

A ring of panels isarranged in anascending spiral aboveyou. Get up to the highledge by performingTriangle Jumps andgliding from one panelto the next. Each panel gets you higher until you reach the ledge.

This sequence ofjumps is hard to pull off,but fortunately there is agenerous platform areabelow so you can climbup and try again if you fall.

When you reach thetop, look up to spy a Coinover the pagoda’s roof.Go up and get it.

To cross the final gap before the exit, use the Iron Soul-Mirrors to carry you as you strike them with repeated combos. Thegap is so long that the Soul-Mirror you start with disintegratesbefore you reach the other side. Swing your sword as you fall

forward and you can catch more Soul-Mirrors along the way.

Alighting at thedistant platform, reward

yourself by smashingopen the containers fora rainbow of Orbs.

When you’re ready,head through the

door to thenext area.

The Final Ascent

Moving and collapsingplatforms lead upwardhere. As you proceed,take your time on theyellow platforms to waitfor the best position.

Conversely, hurry across the red platforms to avoid droppingwith them into the clouds.

After traversing the red platforms, look right to see anotherseries of yellow platforms leading to a high island that is home toa single urn and a gang of Poisonous and Deadly Watchers. Headon up to the island if you wish.

When you’re readyto go on, jump over andrun along the wall onthe left to reach the nextmoving platform.

From there, jump tothe other platform; ittakes you close to thenext wall panel. Run

along the wall andTriangle Jump at theend, then Glideforward to the ramp.

Several Watchers notice you when you arrive and do theirbest to blast you off the ledge. Frustrate them by keeping yourdistance when they detonate.

Continue along the ramp and mow down the demons that getin your way.

At the end, a Coin is within easy reach.Take it, then looktoward the series ofyellow platforms to spy another Coin.

As you go across theplatforms to collect theCoin, watch out for theUndead Archer thatsnipes at you from theledge. Use magic to takehim out.

When you reach theledge, jump and takethe Coin, then Glide tothe ramp.

Now jump on thegreen platform to ride tothe final ramp.

Gold Soul-Mirrorsappear as you approachthe ramp and spray itwith crossfire. To makethings worse, the rampbegins to collapse whenyou step on it. Keeprunning forward,jumping over the lasersand passing under theenergy blasts.

Top off your healthand magic with Orbsfrom the two cratesbefore heading throughthe door.

The Tower of the Gods

When you arrive, a massive tower erupts from the ground. As youclimb each level of the tower, you are tested by a horde ofattacking demons. Only by surviving the gauntlet can you make itto the top.

THE FIRST WAVEInside the tower, thedemons strike. Thedemons on this floor areof the slow-moving type,starting with ForsakenSoldiers and culmi-nating with an UndeadJuggernaut.

Take out the UndeadArcher first, then mopthe rest with liberaldoses of Spin Attacks.

As you defeat thedemons, reinforcementsarrive. Keep plowingthrough their ranks,keeping an eyeout for newArchers.

When the demonsare destroyed, a stair-case appears. Follow itand enter the passage atthe top.

Continue up morestairs until you see acrate. Demolish it andtake the Red Orb frominside, then go throughthe door.

THE SECOND WAVE

Another round of demononslaught begins, thistime featuring leapingdemons like FeralRippers and SinisterTalons.

During these battles, keep your back to thewall to avoid getting struck from behind.

Later reinforce-ments during this waveof assault include aSpear Prowler and aChakram Prowler. Meetthem head-on and anni-hilate them. When youfinish off the two bigcats, the battle ends andyou can climb to the next level.

At the top of thespiral staircase, turnaround to spot the lastCoin over the arena’scenter. Lau can collectthe Coin by running andjumping off the landingright where the darkarea ends (by the edge) and gliding toward the Coin. At the end ofLau’s glide, he atomatically rises in the air; it’s this slight risethat allows him to get the Coin.

You have found all 65 coins! Unfortunately,nothing new is unlocked yet. To open therest of the movies and galleries in the SpecialOptions menu, you must replay the gamelater at higher difficulties, when more Coinswill appear. See “Secrets and Bonuses” formore info.

You will need theYellow Orb inside thecrate at the top of thestairs. Take it and gothrough the door.

THE THIRD WAVE

In the next phase of thegauntlet, an Overlord ofSin and an Overlord ofPain double-team you.

Each Overlord istough enough one-on-one, but as a duo theyare deadly. Whenclashing with oneOverlord, keep your eyeout for his partner andbreak off the clash ifyou get surrounded.

The key to survivalis to keep repositioningyourself so both demonsare close together. Thisway you can clashwithout beingambushed from behind.

While targeting with R, press L to switchtargets. This useful trick will help you keeptrack of both Overlords at all times.

Equip Gaisenkenmagic during thisbattle. The defensiveshield can give you theadvantage you need to win.

After you vanquishthe Overlords, headupstairs and go throughthe final door. Sadly,there are no Orbs foryou this time.

WHITE DEMODRAGON

This gigantic celestial dragon erupts from the tower when you getto the top. Lau grabs on to hitch a ride as the dragon ascends. Ona mystical battleground, the fight begins!

The awesomeDemodragon wieldspowerful magic and ahuge sword. As he flingsice daggers at you withone hand, he sweeps thesword back and forthwith the other. Dodgeand jump to avoid theonslaught.

To dodge the Demodragon’s horizontal swordslashes, just jump and glide over them. If heattacks vertically, you can use your lock onand evade them.

A good chance tostrike occurs when theDemodragon eruptsthrough the floor. Whilehe makes low sweepswith his claws, jumphigh and lay into himwith a midair combo.

Before attacking, equip Tekkuken magic toadd extra power to your blows. Striking thedragon in the head and neck area will domore damage than hitting him in the armsand body.

Things get tougherafter that, when theDemodragon summons afew Watchers to helphim take you down.Keep moving to avoidgetting blasted. As theDemodragon resumes his attack pattern, stick to the same tacticsyou used before and you will defeat him.

With theDemodragon destroyed,Lau is reunited withYohfa. She begs forrelease from thedemons that havepossessed her.

Master Naguriinstructs you to exor-cise the demons fromYohfa using yourswords. Strike well toslay the demon insideof her. Strike poorlyand….

With one blow, Lau shatters the demon that hastaken hold of her soul.

One thing remains: yourfinal confrontation with Rei. He awaits you on the portal’sother side.

This is your last chance to upgrade Lau’slevels before your final encounter with Rei.Visit the Power-Up Settings menu and spendevery Blue Orb.

Rei confronts you whenyou arrive in the DemonDimension. He gives youa taste of what you’re infor by slicing a planetin half, and the show-down begins.

REI JENRON

Rei is a formidableopponent. He wieldseight swords, commandsan arsenal of magictechniques, and is halfdemon to boot.

Conjuring a massiveflying sword, Rei leapsaboard and soars over-head. From this position,he makes chargingswoops and unleashesmagic attacks.

Your strongest attack isCounter-Magic. Press pas the giant swordmakes contact andrelease the absorbedenergy with o.

Counter-Magic is noteffective against allattacks, however. WhenRei abandons his giantsword, he often casts astream of daggers atyou. Avoid the daggersinstead of trying todeflect them.

The best defense isa good offense. Stayclose to Rei and takeadvantage of any open-ings he leaves you afterhe uses magic.

Avoid clashing withRei near the arena’sedge. While he willrescue you if you falloff, it will cost youhealth.

To destroy Rei,there is no substitutefor superior swordplay.Clash with him andattack with everythingyou’ve got. Winning theclash is the only way tobreak through and scorea combo.

When your DefenseGauge runs out, breakout of the clash andhang back until itreplenishes. Dive in anddon’t relent until he isdefeated.

Rei is left to driftforever in the DemonDimension. Lau, hisquest at an end, returns home.

Hard and Extreme ModesWhen you start a newgame, you can select anew difficulty setting:Hard Mode. Enemies arestronger, more numerous,and more aggressive.Additional Coins appearthrough-out the game foryou to collect.

After beating the game in Extreme Mode, pressingL will shuffle through the different Main Menuscreens that are acquired by completing the gamein different difficulty settings.

Hard Mode is tough, and if you complete it you can take onthe supreme challenge of Extreme Mode. The strength andnumbers of your enemies are kicked up to the ultimate level, andeven more Coins appear here and there. Even the most skilled willhave their mettle tested in this mode.

The Special Options MenuThe Special Optionsmenu is available onlyfrom the title screen. Itshows the features andgalleries you unlockedby beating the game andcollecting Coins.

Stage SelectCompleting the game unlocks this menu.Now you can jump in and play the stages inany order! However, you can only choosestages and difficulty levels that you havecompleted.

High ScoresAlso unlocked bycompleting the game,this menu displays therecord scores earned ineach stage at each diffi-culty level.

Edit Opening SceneHere you set options foruse during the demoscene that plays whenyou start a new gameand can save demomovies to your memorycard. You select whatenemies appear andwhat spells you areequipped with duringthe demo. You can even allow Rei to make an entrance!

Movie ViewerThe Movie Viewer offersseveral behind-the-scenesextras, such as an insidelook at the motion-capture process withwhich Lau’s sword tech-nique was modeled. Thesebonus movies areunlocked by findingCoins. When you completethe game, you can also use this menu to review the cutscenes.
