About the Center

The Center for the Advancement of Women’sHealth serves three primary purposes: to providehigh-quality comprehensive medical services forwomen in a clinical facility located on the secondfloor of the Kentucky Clinic; to educate patientsand the community overall about women’s healththrough educational and community outreach

programs; and to expand medical research opportunities for women that encourage advancements in the field of women’s health through our quality

Kentucky Women’s Health Research Registry and clinical trials.

The Center for the Advancement of Women’s Health at the University of Kentucky incorporates five (5) areas of emphasis including research, education, clinical services, community outreach, and leadership.

The Center’s mission is to:

1. Create new knowledge towards the understanding and improvement of women’s health through clinical and basic research initiatives

2. Train primary care practitioners in gender-specific medicine and sensitize all health practitioners to understand and respond to the health care concerns and needs of women

3. Provide gender-specific diagnostic, treatment and preventive health care services in a coordinated, comprehensive and compassionate manner

4. Share women’s health resources and information with consumers, communities, health care professionals, educators, and policy makers

5. Enhance the professional development of women at all academic levels within the University of Kentucky Chandler Medical Center, and increase recruitment, retention, promotion and advancement of women faculty

Women are actively involved in the design of our services and the evaluation of our success in accomplishingour goals and meeting the needs of Kentucky’s women. Evaluation is an ongoing process that provides the Center with valuable feedback about the medical services, educational resources, and research efforts of the Center.

If we want to improve knowledge about women’s health for ourselves, our daughters, our granddaughters, and many generations beyond, then we need to help medical researchers find the answers.

Many important questions regarding women’s healthremain unanswered because women were historicallyexcluded from most medical research studies. Researchersassumed women would react to a drug or treatment therapy the same way as men. However, as more women participate in medical research studies, researchers are discovering that women may have very different reactions than men to the same drugs and treatments. Women also

may respond differently to stress and other environmental and cultural influences. We need more informa-tion to discover why. If we want to improve knowledge about women’s health for ourselves, our daughters, our granddaughters, and many generations beyond, then we need to help medical researchers find the answers. To help women and medical professionals of Kentucky find out why diseases affect women differentlythan men, the Center for the Advancement of Women’s Health has created the KentuckyWomen’s Health Registry.

Our goal is for all Kentucky women to fill out the Kentucky Women’s Health Registry and considervolunteering for medical studies that will help us advance medical knowledge about women’s health.Expanding our knowledge and understanding will lead to new discoveries about diseases, new treatments, and better overall health for ourselves and all the generations of women that come after us. Your participation is completely voluntary and you may ask to be removed from the Registry at any time.
