Starter: What is missing?
One of the
reasons you know
brands like Doritos,
Haribo or Domino’s
is because of
adverts.
Adverts are a very powerful tool
used to persuade
you to buy something. Adverts
are found all over
the place.
At bus stops… On the internet… And on the TV!
Have you ever
wanted something
because you saw it
on an advert?

Should junk food ads be banned?
©VotesForSchools2019
Why are we talking about this?
The government is
thinking about banning
junk food ads until 9pmboth online and on TV.
They hope it will help
children make healthier
choices about their diet.

What do you think
junk food is? You
will find out later!
Just last month, the
Mayor of London
banned junk food ads
on London’s buses, trains and at all stations.

Diet:The food and drink a
person usually has
every day.

Why are we talking about this?
At the moment, junk food
ads are only banned from our
screens when the programme
or channel is just for children1, e.g. during Peppa Pig.
But the government is worried that this isn’t
enough. They say that junk food ads need to
be banned for all programmes before 9pmbecause children watch TV shows that are for
adults as well as children!

What exactly is junk food?
When food is called a ‘junk food’ it means it contains lots of fat, salt or sugar6. It is not very healthy for you, but can be eaten as part of a balanced diet.
Do you think any of these foods have a lot of fat, salt or sugar?
Ice cream has lots of
sugar in it. A tub of vanilla ice cream2
contains 84g of sugar
(more than 21
teaspoons!)
Pizza1 contains lots of
salt. Sometimes all the salt you should be
having in a day can be
found in a single pizza!
One Bacon Double
Cheeseburger from
McDonald’s contains
more than half4 of the
fats you should have in a day!
Too much fat, salt or sugar can be bad for our health. It’s important to eat healthily so that we feel our best
and stay well.

What exactly is junk food?
The way we work out if a something is a junk food1 is quite tricky*.
You are going to need your maths skills for this next task!
If the food / drink ends up with a score of
4 or above, it is considered a ‘junk’ food1. Let’s go to the next slide for an example!
First, the food / drink scores
points following these rules:
• For every 300 kJ of energy, the
food scores 1 point (so 600kJ of
energy = 2 points, 900kJ = 3 points).
• For every gram (g) of fat**, the
food scores 1 point (so 2g = 2
points, 3g = 3 points).
• For every 5 grams (g) of sugar, the
food scores 1 point (so 10g sugar =
2 points, 25g sugar = 5 points).
• For every 100 milligrams (mg) of salt
the food scores 1 point.
Then, a food / drink will have
points taken away following these rules:
• For every fruit, vegetable or nut, take
away 1 point.
• For every 1 gram (g) of fibre take
away 1 point.
• For every 1 gram (g) of protein take
away 1 point.

What exactly is junk food?
When we think
about junk food, we often come up with
foods like burgers,
cookies, chips, crisps,
sweets, fizzy drinks and
pizza.
Some of these can be made in a much
healthier way, with less
salt and sugar, like the homemade burger you
just saw.
Come up with a list of things
you have learned about junk
food. Remember: not all burgers are
good for you, and not all pizzas are
junk food!
If you are unsure about a food, ask
your parents to help you look at the
nutritional information on food packaging!

• I think that junk food ads can be
really influential on children and
encourage them to eat foods that
are bad for their health.
• The government should protect
children more from junk food ads so
that they can stay healthy.
• When I see an advert for junk food,
it makes me want to eat it! If I didn’t
see these foods as much, I think I
could eat more healthily.

• I don’t think that an advert has any
impact on the foods and drinks I
choose to consume.
• My parents and school are
responsible for making sure I have a
healthy diet, not the government.
• The government should help to
teach people about nutritious foods
and how to stay healthy, instead of
banning adverts for junk food.
