Dear Parents

I hope you enjoyed summerrsquos final fling last week It would appear that we are now heading into autumn rather quickly You may have noticed me on the road this morning looking rather cold and wet I was with Ms McKenna watching the traffic situation on one of our car-free Fridays I am grateful to parents for their feedback on this subject and as a result of your comments and my own observations I have had discussions this morning with our whole school leadership team and our PTA Chair Although we are keen to do what we can to raise awareness of green issues our first priority is the safety of your children What we have decided to do is to discontinue our Traffic Free Fridays as they are in their current form However from Tuesday 25 October we will make every day a no parking day but with drop offs allowed So you can drive into school drop off your child on the yellow line at the front of school then drive on to work or back home If you need to come into school yourself you will have to park in the car park opposite school No parking will be allowed on campus

We will try to have secondary students outside escorting children to the playground It would be very helpful if parents could also volunteer to help All we would need is one parent each day to support our secondary students - you would even get a free dayglo jacket If you are interested in helping please let me know or tell the primary office The barriers will close from 0845 until 1430 I hope this will make the traffic situation easier for you all and make our campus safer I will be sending this information to you via hard copy early next week This new routine will come into action after the half term break Next Friday will not be a traffic free campus but a normal day If you have any questions about this please contact me Thank you for your understanding

I hope you are keeping up-to-date with our weekly podcasts The latest one provides a window into class 2P and their learning The children really enjoy participating and sharing their learning with us Every Monday morning a new podcast is posted so if you have a moment please have a look They are on our website under lsquoPrimary Schoolrsquo then lsquoPrimary Video Podcastsrsquo httpwwwishthehaguenlcontentprimary-video-podcasts

A reminder that we have our half-term holiday the week after next We close for the break on Friday 14th October at 1500 and return to school on Tuesday 25th October The teachers return a day earlier for a study day where we will be working on curriculum mapping

This morning we interviewed some excellent candidates for the position of School Nurse We hope that the successful applicant will start here on 1st November or soon afterwards This is a day I have been looking forward to for a long time As a state sponsored school we have had to deal with a fair amount of bureaucracy to arrive at this point but I know you will agree that having a full-time school nurse is a big step forward for our school in terms of the safety and care of our students Up to now our office staff and trained first aiders have done a remarkable job and I am very grateful to them Again I will inform you of our decision

I hope you have a pleasant weekend

Mother TongueldquoIn every conceivable manner the family is a link to our past bridge to our futurerdquo Alex Haley

On Tuesday 27 of September we organised an information evening to explain how we are supporting EAL and Mother Tongue in our school It was well attended Thank you to all the parents that join us and a big thank you to Zein After School Care for providing supervision As mentioned during the evening you are always welcome to meet with us to discuss your childrsquos languages development

Some Knowledge to shareSometimes EAL students complete beginners in English say very little in their first weeks or even months of school This doesnrsquot mean they do not understand what is going on They are actually acquiring the language through comprehensible input Often they will later start speaking in complete sentences happy to be able to use what they have been acquiring We call it the silent period

MT after the school dayLast week after school language classes started for Arabic French and Spanish on Wednesdays and Thursdays and German on Thursdays It was nice to

see how happy the children were to come back to the MT classes and to discover their new friends

Welcome to Veronique Nougues our new French tutor I have a meeting next week with a possible Portuguese teacher We are still looking for one German and one Dutch teacher for Wednesdays and two Dutch teachers for Thursdays

On top of the languages mentioned in the last newsletter we were asked to look at possibilities to open Italian and Norwegian languages We also have a Romanian teacher available If you would like your child to join one of these 3 language groups please contact me

In the next newsletter we will give you some news on what is happening during the Mother Tongue time during the curriculum Our language groups are now sorted if you or your secondary child would like to join to support the children during this time (Tuesdays 210-300) please contact me and I will let you know in which class your childlanguage group is in

Kind regardsPascale Hertay Deputy Head phertayishthehaguenl

Guests during the Music Lesson In the past week the children in year 5 received two guests during our music lessons As part of their Orchestra Project wersquove invited a professional clarinet player Paula Pantin (paulapanlogmailcom) and a renowned oboe player Irma Kort to show them their instruments The year 5 children were given a chance to listen to their beautiful playing (Paula played the cat theme from Peter and the Wolf and short fragment of the Bolero of Ravel ndash Irma played an Argentinean tango and the theme from Swan Lake) Quite a few of our kids recognised the music Mrs Kort is as well as a teacher also a member of the famous Nederlands Blazers Ensemble This group has often high quality childrenrsquos programs and a composition competition for children (wwwnbenl)

The kids saw a double and single reed tried to blow on the instruments in a way giving them a chance to explore their musical tastes and maybe chose to play a less common instrument In the lesson with the oboe player Irma Kort (wwwirmakortnl) the kids made their own double reed using a straw and scissors Quite impressive to see what sounds they managed to produce with it Their faces and pleasure while they were experimenting with something new just said it all

If any of the year 5 students have come home with the desire to have a trial lesson with these teachers please feel free to contact me or them directly I hope these lessons are a step towards broadening the childrenrsquos musical interest and appreciation
