Earn:

Working for money.

Why are we talking about this?

Lots of people think that children

getting pocket money teaches

them how to save and look after

their money, especially when they

need to do chores to earn it, like

tidying up or helping with shopping!

However, other people think

that children are too young to

look after money, and it’s

better to leave it to the adults!

This week, we’ll be asking you

what you think. Remember to

log your vote at the end!

How could you earn it?

If your parent or carer decides to give you pocket money, it is

important to decide an amount that you both agree on.

One way that families

choose to do this is by

creating a list of chores

that they would like

young people to do,

and pay their children

for each of these jobs.

Opinion (2 mins)

What do think

about this idea? Extension:

Do you help your family with chores?

Why/why not?

could you do around

the house? Have a think

Add a price! (3-5 mins)

Now think about how

much you think you should

earn for doing these jobs!

Write a price next to each

job on your list.

Our family jobs list:

Set the table for dinner: 5 minutes’

screen time

Put washing away: an extra snack

Help tidy up: choose a family movie

Hoover the stairs: chips for dinner

Wash a car: go to the park for an hour

Not all families want to

give their children

pocket money. Instead,

children can earn treats

by doing jobs!

For example, children

might earn extra time on

their games consoles, or

an ice cream at the end

of the week.

Would you prefer to earn money or

Spend or save? (5-10 mins)

On the next few slides, can you

help these young people decide

whether to spend or save their

money?

If you think they should

spend, open yours arms up!

If you think they should

save, fold your arms!

Many people think that pocket money teaches young people

how to save money. But how good are you at knowing when to

spend and when to save?

Spend or save?

Read the opinions on

the next few slides. If

you agree, stand up. If

When it comes to pocket money, there are lots of different

opinions about why young people should or shouldn’t have it.

• Pocket money teaches you

how to look after money.

• Doing jobs for pocket money

makes children more

responsible.

• Saving up for something makes

you feel good and understand

the value of money.

• I would like decide when to

spend or save my money.

Should young people earn pocket

money?

Yes No

• Adults are better at looking

after money.

• You should help out your

family at home to be nice, not

just for money.

• My family buys me the things

that I need, so I don’t need

any money.

• I would rather get treats for the

jobs I do, not money.

Ext.: Pocket money petition

Lots of parents do decide to give their children

pocket money, but how much is the right amount?

I’m thinking of a number…

(2-3 mins)

How much do you think is the perfect

amount? Discuss it with your partner

or the person you are working with.

Do they have the same idea as you?

If not, can you agree on a number in

between?

The perfect

amount is…

50p?

£1?
