Welcome to Mapperley CE Primary

May I offer you a warm welcome to our school. Mapperley CE Primary School is a happy school, where the education and the pastoral care of our children are at the forefront of our daily routine.

Our ethos is simple. We provide a high quality of education and care for all of our children that helps them begin to reach their potential and prepares them for the next stages in their education and for their future lives. We develop an enthusiasm for learning through fun and engaging experiences which include everyone.

We want to work with you, as parents, in helping our children enrich their lives academically, spiritually and socially. Mapperley serves children from the school year in which they are five years old, up to age eleven.

The school has a pupil roll of approximately 60 children, organised currently into three classes for English and Mathematics and two classes for other subjects.

As a Church school, we have close links with a number of local churches, especially Holy Trinity Church in the village. We reflect Christian values in the everyday life of the school.

We are very proud of our school and warmly welcome anyone wishing to visit us to see some of the exciting learning opportunities that we offer, our fantastic children and our dedicated staff team. Anyone wishing to arrange a visit can do so by contacting Mrs Tracy Hooton in the school office.

Our School

Mapperley C. E. Primary School is a 4+ - 11 years of age, Church of England Controlled, co-educational school. Children attending the school are from the immediate area of Mapperley Village itself and from the surrounding areas of Ilkeston, Shipley View and West Hallam.

There are two classes in school. Reception to year 2 are in one classroom and year 3 to year 5 are in the KS2 classroom. We believe it is important to ensure that the school has a happy, calm and relaxed atmosphere in which the children can enjoy their work.

Sometimes the children will work as a class, other times in small flexible groups and they will also have special, individual

programmes of work, as it is important that all children are given tasks appropriate to their ability. In order to achieve this we endeavour to combine the best traditional methods with the best of the more modern teaching techniques.

This prospectus contains details of the school’s aims, management and organisation, its routine practices and other relevant information.

Prospective parents are welcome to view the school by appointment with the head teacher, please contact our school office if you wish to make an appointment.

Our school is small so we know each other really well and everyone looks after everyone else. It is friendly, calm and safe here.

Play time is really fun and noisy we

have amazing things to play with

and the path is really nice.

At playtime I play tig and football. The climbing wall is really good for

practising climbing.

We teach a broad and balanced curriculum that recognises the multicultural society we live in, our core British values and retains our own Christian beliefs.

The school works within the framework of the Early Years Foundation Stage and the Primary National Curriculum. The teaching staff work together to plan learning experiences and opportunities for each year group based on the appropriate curriculum and the schools own Schemes of Work.

Literacy, numeracy, science, art, design, music, geography, history, PE, computing, RE and PSHE (personal, social, health, education) are covered throughout the curriculum to support your child’s creative, physical, social, and academic development.

The school adopts a personalised learning approach, putting children at the centre of their own learning.

Our Learning

All documents relating to National Curriculum schemes, Ofsted reports and whole school policies are available in school and the Headteacher will be happy to receive requests to look at these. Please refer to the school website for more detailed information on our school policies. Alternatively, please contact the school office if you require to see a paper copy.

Learning at Mapperley Church of England Primary SchoolThere are phases for the different age groups known as “key stages” - three in the primary and two in the secondary school. These help everyone to know what their children should be learning at various stages.

In our school, we have: Early Years Foundation Stage: 4 and 5 year old children in Reception. Key Stage 1: 5 – 7 year olds in Years 1 and 2. Key Stage 2: 7 – 11 year olds in Years 3, 4, 5 and 6.

Early Years Foundation StageOur curriculum in the early years aims to ensure that children have a balanced and broad experience. Young children need plenty of time to explore and experiment for themselves, they need to play and interact with other children and adults. Above all, they need to have fun, enjoy being together and learn about getting on with other children and behaving well. Children in the early years will spend some time working directly with adults, some engaged in activities where adults are occasionally involved, and some time choosing and being independent in their choice of activity. All of these are very important in allowing children to grow into successful, independent young learners.

Key Stages 1 and 2 Our Key Stage 1 and 2 children follow the National Curriculum

The National Curriculum for primary children includes: English and Maths, Languages (French), Religious Education, Geography, Science, History, Art and Design, Music, Computing, Physical Education, Design and Technology, Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE) and Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) are also part of our curriculum. Often we work through themes where several curriculum areas are addressed under one heading, for example, a geography topic on Modern Britain will include art work, RE, history, design technology and English.

Reception Outdoor Learning Environment

Reception classes use this area throughout the day. All areas of

learning are considered when the teachers plan activities for this area,

where children benefit from learning in the fresh air.

Send, Inclusion & Support

Our SEND Provision is high quality based entirely upon inclusion.

Mrs Marshall is our school SENCo and will support your child alongside the class teacher if they have a particular identified learning need.

At Mapperley Church of England (VC) Primary School, we embrace the fact that every child is different, and aim to ensure that the needs of all of our children are met so that they be the best that they can be.

The School SEN Information ReportThis utilises the LA Local Offer to meet the needs of SEN pupils as determined by school policy, and the provision that the school is able to meet.

We are proud of our range of quality trips and visits which provide opportunities for children to learn outside the classroom, including local visits to Woodside Nature Reserve and Mapperley Wood for Forest Schools. We have visits during each year to places of interest and children in Year 5 and 6 have the opportunity to take part in a residential trip to Lea Green. We also have visitors to school such as NSPCC, Dogs’ Trust, community police officers or visitors from the world of sport.

Wider Opportunities

School trips are fun. We go to the cinema,

forest school and sometimes Derby

university.

“ “I love school trips because you get to explore new places and find out about them.

The children have the opportunity to extend their learning and development at Forest School in the beautiful surroundings of Mapperley Woods. Forest School is designed to motivate and challenge children

to explore and engage with the natural world and encourages them to embrace and enjoy their environment. Children

develop increased co-operation, communication and awareness of others by taking part in a range of activities outdoors such as den building and playing team and group games. They also increase their skills and knowledge of the local area and wildlife by participating in art and sculpture work using natural resources, woodland crafts as well as rope and string work. Self-esteem and self-confidence is

fostered through exploration and allowing children to have ownership of their learning and encouraging imagination and creativity.

Our ValuesCollective WorshipIn our church school, the daily Act of Collective Worship is an important part of the school day, when the whole school joins together for a period of prayer and reflection. Children are given the opportunity to plan and perform in some acts of collective worship. Although our emphasis is on Christianity, we learn about, and from, other world religions. Our collective worship sessions are also sometimes linked to our PSHE themes. We stress the similarities between religions and try to understand, accept and respect each other’s differences. Children may be withdrawn from participating on religious grounds if parents make a request. Collective worship is held in school and at Holy Trinity Church in Mapperley.

Impeccable BehaviourWe believe that every child can choose to behave well and at Mapperley CE Primary school our pupils do so every day. Our positive behaviour system is based upon our shared school values as a Church of England Primary School. It is a primary aim that every member of our school community feels valued and respected and that each person is treated fairly and well. We have five rules which apply at all times in all parts of school and at all times in the school day.

• I will show respect and care for my school and everyone in it.

• I will follow instructions the first time I am asked.

• I will look at, and listen to, the person who is talking without interrupting.

• I will move around school quietly and sensibly.

• I will be where I am supposed to be at all times.

Children are awarded credits towards their Passport to Learning, as well as being able to go up the Behaviour Ladder in school for good behaviour and work. We have several other school rewards including a Star of The Week award where children nominate each other for their thoughtful behaviour.

Teachers are really nice and really helpful. They help us to learn new stuff and if I am stuck with my work they always help me.

The PTA at Mapperley is an informal group of parents who wish to support the school. We hold monthly meetings to discuss fundraising ideas for the forthcoming school year. It doesn’t matter how much or how little you can do to support, as anyone, anytime or anything given is always appreciated. Each year we hold a family event, seasonal fayre, school discos, coffee mornings, picnic in the park and other social events. Some of the events are more social than fundraising offering children, parents, the local community and staff opportunity to socialise outside of school hours.Funds raised go towards a range of different things for school including books, classroom equipment and outside play equipment.
